Over the past century, a large body of research has provided detailed knowledge of the molecular processes underlying virus-vector interactions. Multiple studies have evaluated the accuracy of infarct volume (IV) as a predictor of outcome in patients with ischaemic stroke; however, no study has systematically reviewed the results of these studies.

This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to sum up the results of the studies evaluating IV as the prognostic criteria for patients with cerebral ischaemia.

Human studies that reported the infarction volume and any prognostic outcome in patients with ischaemic stroke were collected from PubMed, Scopus, Embase and Cochrane library databases. Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Checklist was applied to evaluate the quality of the included articles. 90-day modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score was used as a meta-analysis outcome. The area under the curve, sensitivity and specificity among included studies was evaluated. The heterogeneity of the studies was assessed by Cochran test Egger and Begg test was used for assessing publication bias.

Among the included studies, nine studies assessed the association between IV and outcome (90-day mRS score). The results of the meta-analysis revealed a significant association between IV with the unfavourable functional outcome (mRS score of 3-6) (OR=0.80; 95% CI 0.74-0.86 per 10mL, P<.001; I

Functional motor disorders (FMDs) are frequent and highly disabling conditions. Despite the substantial advances in FMDs diagnosis, mechanisms and treatments, their tangible application to care of patients with FMDs is yet to be established. We aimed to identify the main real-life gaps and barriers in FMDs care, faced by both patients and physicians, in two different European countries, Italy and Czechia.

A cross-cultural study was performed.

Both patients and physicians are face practical difficulties and pay a high price for the poor management of FMDs as a result of outdated classifications and insufficient education. This, in turn, has led to inadequate access to care and the existence of common misbeliefs regarding symptom severity or even suspicion of malingering. FMDs need to be integrated into national healthcare systems and in research priorities so that substantial cost savings can be achieved and appropriate care provided to patients.

We found multiple serious real-life unmet needs in FMD care, ranging from terminology and classification to poor recognition in national healthcare priorities. The aim of our research was to investigate retrospectively the relationship between the symptoms and general characteristics, initial laboratory values and treatments in patients who had COVID-19 and who applied to the chest diseases outpatient clinic for control after 1month.

Three hundred fifteen patients who were diagnosed with COVID-19 and applied to the chest diseases outpatient clinic between May 2020 and August 2020 for control in the 1st month were included in the study. Patient information was collected from the hospital information system and the e-pulse system.

Females accounted for 50.2% of our patients and their mean age was 47.9±14.8 (19-88) years. About 14.3% (n 45) of the individuals were 65years of age and older, 20.6% (n 65) of our patients were smoking and 70.2% (n 221) of our patients were treated at home. A total of 133 patients had at least one comorbid disease. The patients most frequently reported cough, dyspnoea, weakness, myalgia and diarrhoea. The most common symptoms were coussion. Patients are informed that their symptoms may last for a long time, unnecessary hospital admissions can be avoided.
The aim was to investigate the neural correlates of impaired self-awareness of cognitive deficits (IACd) in non-demented patients with Parkinson's disease (PD).

This cross-sectional study enrolled 153 drug-naïve and non-demented PD patients who underwent brain magnetic resonance imaging, dopamine transporter (DAT) positron emission tomography, detailed neuropsychological testing, and the Cognitive Complaints Interview at baseline. Based on the presence of mild cognitive impairment and subjective cognitive complaints, patients were grouped into those with IACd (PD-IACd+, n=33) and those with normal recognition of cognitive function (n=82) or underestimation of cognitive function (n=38). Cortical thickness, white matter (WM) integrity, DAT availability and cognitive function were compared between the groups.

The prevalence of IACd was 21.6% in drug-naïve patients with PD. The PD-IACd+ group had a lower z-score in the Stroop color reading test than the other groups. Patients in the PD-IACd+ group had WM disintegrity, especially in the genu of the corpus callosum and anterior limb of the internal capsule, compared to those without IACd, whilst cortical thickness or striatal DAT availability was comparable regardless of the presence of IACd. Amongst patients with mild cognitive impairment, those with IACd had more severe WM disintegrity than those without IACd.

Similar inflammatory processes are observed in glaucomatous optic neuropathy, age-related macular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa, posterior uveitis, Alzheimer's disease, and Parkinson's disease. In particular, human and animal studies have demonstrated the important role microglia/macrophages play in initiating and maintaining a pro-inflammatory environment in degenerative processes impacting vision. On the other hand, microglia have also been shown to have a protective role in multiple central nervous system diseases. Identifying the mechanisms underlying cell dysfunction and death is the first step toward developing novel therapeutics for these diseases impacting the central nervous system. In addition to reviewing recent key studies defining important mediators of retinal inflammation, with an emphasis on translational studies that bridge this research from bench to bedside, we also highlight a promising therapeutic class of medications, the glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists. Finally, we propose areas where additional research is necessary to identify mechanisms that can be modulated to shift the balance from a neurotoxic to a neuroprotective retinal environment.Microbial communities are hugely diverse, but we do not yet understand how species invasions and extinctions drive and limit their diversity. On the one hand, the ecological limits hypothesis posits that diversity is primarily limited by environmental resources. To find out which hypothesis better explains the assembly of microbial communities, we used metabolic modelling. We represent each microbial species by a metabolic network that harbours thousands of biochemical reactions. Together, these reactions determine which carbon and energy sources a species can use, and which metabolic by-products-potential nutrients for other species-it can excrete in a given environment. We assemble communities by modelling thousands of species invasions in a chemostat-like environment. We find that early during the assembly process, diversity begets diversity.

Primary cell cultures from wild organisms have been gaining relevance in ecotoxicology as they are considered more sensitive than immortalized cell lines and retain the biochemical pathways found in vivo. In this study, the efficacy of two methods for primary hepatocyte cell isolation was compared using liver from two marine fish (Sparus aurata and Psetta maxima) (i) two-step collagenase perfusion and (ii) pancreatin digestion with modifications. Cell cultures were incubated in L-15 medium at 17 ± 1 °C and monitored for up to six days for cell viability and function using the trypan blue exclusion test, MTT test, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity, and ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase (EROD) activity after Benzo[a]Pyrene exposure. The results showed significant differences between the number of viable cells (p less then 0.05), the highest number being obtained for the pancreatin digestion method (average = 4.5 ± 1.9 × 107 cells). Moreover, the hepatocytes showed solid adherence to the culture plate and the rounded shape, changing into a triangular/polygonal shape. The cell viability and function obtained by pancreatin digestion were maintained for five days, and the EROD induction after exposure to the B[a]P showed that cells were metabolically active. This study shows that the optimized pancreatin digestion method is a valid, cost-effective, and simple alternative to the standard perfusion method for the isolation of primary hepatocytes from fish and is suitable for ecotoxicological studies involving marine pollutants, such as PAHs.Nutrition plays a fundamental role in the prevention and treatment of dyslipidemias and its oxidative-related complications. Currently, there is evidence about the beneficial effects of isolated antioxidants or foods enriched or added with antioxidant compounds. However, the application of the natural foods is more integrated than the analysis of a single nutrient. Our aim is compiling scientific literature regarding the nutritional strategies by foods with antioxidant effect in blood lipids, enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants, and oxidative and inflammatory markers of subjects with dyslipidemia. We searched in MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. From a total of 263 studies screened, 16 were included. Dietary strategies included walnuts, olive oil, raw almonds, G. paraguayase, white sesame, mate tea, Brazil nut flour, red wine, granulated Brazil nuts, grapes, wolfberry fruit, fermented beverage, coffee, orange, and blackberry juices showed significant differences in blood lipids, antioxidant activity, antioxidant enzymes, and oxidative and inflammatory markers. This systematic review compiling scientific studies about dietary strategies using foods with antioxidant effect to improve the antioxidant status in dyslipidemias.After the fall of communism, the healthcare systems of Central and Eastern European countries underwent enormous transformation, resulting in departure from publicly financed healthcare. This had significant adverse effects on equity in healthcare, which are still evident. In this paper, we analyzed the role of government and households in financing healthcare in eight countries (EU-8) Czechia, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, and Slovenia. A desk research method was applied to collect quantitative data on healthcare expenditures and qualitative data on gaps in universal health coverage. A linear regression analysis was used to analyze a trend in health expenditure over the years 2000-2018. Our results indicate that a high reliance on out-of-pocket payments persists in many EU-8 countries, and only a few countries have shown a significant downward trend over time. The gaps in universal coverage in the EU-8 countries are due to explicit rationing (a limited benefit package, patient cost sharing) and implicit mechanisms (wait times). There is need to increase the role of public financing in CEE countries through budget prioritization, reducing patient co-payments for medical products and medicines, and extending the benefit package for these goods, as well as improving the quality of care.The purpose of this pilot study was to assess the feasibility and acceptability of a mobile smoking cessation intervention in Puerto Rico. This was a single-arm pilot study with 26 smokers in Puerto Rico who were enrolled in Decídetexto, a mobile smoking cessation intervention. Decídetexto incorporates three integrated components (1) a tablet-based software that collects smoking-related information to develop an individualized quit plan, (2) a 24-week text messaging counseling program with interactive capabilities, and (3) pharmacotherapy support. Outcome measures included self-reported 7-day point prevalence abstinence at Months 3 and 6, pharmacotherapy adherence, satisfaction with the intervention, and changes in self-efficacy. The average age of the participants was 46.8 years (SD 12.7), half of them (53.8%) were female. Most participants (92.3%) smoked daily and half of them (53.8%) used menthol cigarettes. All participants requested nicotine patches at baseline. However, only 13.0% of participants used the patch >75% of days. At Month 3, 10 participants (38.4%) self-reported 7-day point prevalence abstinence (88.5% follow-up rate). At Month 6, 16 participants (61.5%) self-reported 7-day point prevalence abstinence (76.9% follow-up rate). Most participants (90%, 18/20) reported being satisfied/extremely satisfied with the intervention at Month 6. Self-efficacy mean scores significantly increased from 40.4 (SD 12.1) at baseline to 57.9 (SD 11.3) at Month 3 (p less then 0.01). The aim of the study was to assess the effects of ulipristal acetate (UPA) on fibroids, especially on estrogen receptor (ER) and progesterone receptor (PR) immunoexpression, proliferation, apoptosis and tissue fibrosis, and to compare the above parameters in untreated (surgical attention only) and UPA-treated leiomyomas. UPA-treated patients were divided into three groups (1) good response (≥25% reduction in volume of fibroid), (2) weak response (insignificant volume reduction) and (3) no response to treatment (no decrease or increase in fibroid volume). The study observed a significant decrease in the percentage of collagen volume fraction and ER and PR immunoexpression in the good response group, in the percentage of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA)- and Ki67-positive cells in the groups with good and weak reactions vs. control group; significantly higher apoptotic index (terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end-labeling (TUNEL)-positive cells) in the good reaction group vs. control group. We examined medical indications for cesarean delivery that involve a greater degree of physician discretion (more subjective) versus medical indications that involve less physician discretion (more objective) to better understand factors contributing to the higher rate among Micronesian, one of the most recent migrant groups in the state, compared to White women in Hawai'i. (2) Methods A retrospective chart review was conducted to collect data on 620 cesarean deliveries (N = 296 White and N = 324 Micronesian) at the state's largest maternity hospital. Multivariate regression models were used to examine associations between maternal and obstetric characteristics and (1) subjective indication defined as non-reassuring fetal heart tracing (NRFHT) and arrest of labor disorders, and (2) objective indication defined as all other indications (e.g., malpresentation). (3) Results We found that Micronesian women had significantly higher odds of cesarean delivery due to a subjective indication compared to White women (aOR 4.17; CI 2.52-6.88; P less then 0.001; N = 619) after adjusting for multiple covariates. (4) Conclusion These findings suggest unmeasured factors, possibly provider bias, may influence cesarean delivery recommendations for Micronesian women in Hawai'i.Background and Objectives The objective of this paper is to compare the visual outcomes and quality of life (QoL) after bilateral ultrathin Descemet's stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (UT-DSAEK) with bilateral penetrating keratoplasty (PK) for Fuchs' endothelial dystrophy (FED). Materials and Methods Retrospective comparative cohort study, including 11 patients with FED who underwent bilateral PK and 13 patients with FED who underwent bilateral UT-DSAEK. All patients were already pseudophakic or had undergone a combined cataract procedure. The main outcomes were corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) corneal higher-order aberrations (HOAs), contrast sensitivity (CS) and quality of life (QoL). Results The mean follow-up after the second eye surgery was 32.5 ± 10.2 months in PK and 19.6 ± 8.6 months in UT-DSAEK patients. The CDVA in the UT-DSAEK group was significantly better than in the PK one (0.18 ± 0.07 vs. 0.35 ± 0.16 logMAR, p less then 0.0001). The mean anterior corneal total HOAs of the central 5 mm were significantly lower in UT-DSAEK eyes than in PK eyes (0.438 ± 0.078 µ and 1.282 ± 0.330 µ respectively, p less then 0.0001), whilst the mean posterior total HOAs did not differ between groups (0.196 ± 0.056 µ and 0.231 ± 0.089 µ, respectively, p = 0.253). The CS was lower at 0.75 and 1.5 cycles/degree in P the K group when compared to the DSAEK one (p = 0.008 and 0.005, respectively). The QoL scores by the NEI RQL-42 test exhibited better values in DSAEK patients in 9 out of 13 scales. Conclusion Our study confirms that UT-DSAEK provides a better visual function in terms of CDVA and CS, together with lower HOAs, when compared to PK. Hence, the vision-related QoL, binocularly evaluated by the NEI RQL-42 items, indicates a higher satisfaction in UT-DSAEK eyes.

The aim of this retrospective multicenter study was to analyze CEUS features of histologically proven HCC in patients with non-cirrhotic liver. In this multicenter study, 96 patients from eight medical institutions with histologically proven HCC lesions in non-cirrhotic liver were retrospectively reviewed regarding SonoVue-enhanced CEUS features. Two ultrasound experts assessed the CEUS enhancement pattern and came to a consensus using the World Federation of Societies for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology guideline criteria. The mean size of HCC lesions included was 60.3 ± 37.8 mm (mean ± standard deviation). Most of the lesions were heterogeneous but predominantly hypo-echoic on B-mode ultrasound (64.5%, 62/96), with ill-defined margins and irregular shapes. During the arterial phase of CEUS, most of the HCC lesions in non-cirrhotic liver exhibited heterogeneous hyperenhancement (78.1%, 75/96) compared with the surrounding liver parenchyma. Almost 30% of HCC lesions (28.1%, 27/96) exhibited early wash-out ( less then 60 s). All lesions exhibited wash-out and hypo-enhancement in the late phase. CEUS features of HCC lesions in non-cirrhotic patients typically include hyperenhancement in the arterial phase and relatively rapid wash-out in the portal venous phase, which is different from HCC in cirrhotic livers and more similar to liver metastasis.
Iron deficiency has deleterious effects in patients with cardiopulmonary disease, independent of anemia. Low ferritin has been associated with increased mortality in patients undergoing cardiac surgery, but modern indices of iron deficiency need to be explored in this population.

We conducted a retrospective single-centre observational study of 250 adults in a UK academic tertiary hospital undergoing median sternotomy for non-emergent isolated aortic valve replacement. We characterised preoperative iron status using measurement of both plasma ferritin and soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR), and examined associations with clinical outcomes.

Measurement of plasma sTfR gave a prevalence of iron deficiency of 22%. Patients with non-anemic iron deficiency had clinically significant prolongation of total hospital stay (mean increase 2.2days; 95% CI 0.5-3.9; P = 0.011) and stay within the cardiac intensive care unit (mean increase 1.3days; 95% CI 0.1-2.5; P = 0.039). There were no deaths. Defining iron deficicy in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. An interventional study of intravenous iron targeted at preoperative non-anemic iron deficiency is warranted.Diagnostic updates, an increased precision of tumor sub-type classification and the development of new diagnostic biomarkers (immunohistochemistry (IHC), Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and other molecular pathology techniques), have a significant impact on pathologists' management of tissue samples. The objective of this work was to test and validate the FISH technique on detached IHC slides. An IHC technique was first performed on 30 tissue samples. After detachment of the lamella, a FISH technique was then performed according to the usual protocol with a centromeric probe. A validation cohort (n=10) with duplicate testing using a traditional FISH technique and an IHC slide with a detached lamella was then carried out. Finally, a cohort of 20 "old" cases (IHC carried out over 2years ago) was also tested. Different types of probes (specific locus, break apart) have been used. All the slides were interpreted by a technician and a pathologist. Evaluation criteria were the general interpretability of the slide ; the percentage of labeled nuclei; intensity of the signal and the presence or absence of autofluorescence. FISH was interpretable in 100% of recently treated cases and 90% of "old" cases with a satisfactory intensity and a high percentage of labeled nuclei, without autofluorescence. The results of our study show that the reuse of IHC slides for performing FISH is a powerful means of economizing tissue samples, especially for small samples and in the absence of archived representative material.
Emergency general surgery (EGS) patients account for more than one-third of admissions to hospitals in the National Health Service (NHS) in England. The associated mortality of these patients has been quoted as approximately eight times higher than that of elective surgical admissions. This study used a modified Delphi approach to identify research priorities in EGS. The aim was to establish a research agenda using a formal consensus-based approach in an effort to identify questions relevant to EGS that could ultimately guide research to improve outcomes for this cohort.

Three rounds were conducted using an electronic questionnaire and involved health care professionals, research personnel, patients and their relatives. In the first round, stakeholders were invited to submit clinical research questions that they felt were priorities for future research. In rounds two and three, participants were asked to score individual questions in order of priority using a 5-point Likert scale. Between rounds, an expertermine the research agenda for future EGS projects. It may also assist setting priorities for research funding and multi-centre collaborative strategies within the academic clinical interest of EGS.
It is well documented that Canadian healthcare does not fully meet the health needs of First Nations, Inuit or Métis peoples. In 1996, the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples concluded that Indigenous peoples' healthcare needs had to be met by strategies and systems that emerged from Indigenous worldviews and cultures. In 2015, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission also called on health organizations to learn from Indigenous "knowledges" and integrate Indigenous worldviews alongside biomedicine and other western ways of knowing. These calls have not yet been met. Meanwhile, the dynamic of organizational learning from knowledges and evidence within communities is poorly understood-particularly when learning is from communities whose ways of knowing differ from those of the organization. Through an exploration of organizational and health system learning, this study will explore how organizations learn from the Indigenous communities they serve and contribute to (re-)conceptualizing the learning organizae, this study will help to identify and understand ways for organizations to learn from and respectfully apply knowledges and evidence held within Indigenous communities so that their health and wellness are supported. In this way, this study will help to guide health organizations in the listening and learning that is required to contribute to reconciliation in healthcare.

Due to the existence of formidable blood-brain barrier (BBB) and the aggressive growth and infiltrating nature of GBM, timely diagnosis and treatment of GBM is still very challenging. Among different imaging modalities, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with merits including high soft tissue resolution, non-invasiveness and non-limited penetration depth has become the preferred tool for GBM diagnosis. Furthermore, multimodal imaging with combination of MRI and other imaging modalities would not only synergistically integrate the pros, but also overcome the certain limitation in each imaging modality, offering more accurate morphological and pathophysiological information of brain tumors. Since contrast agents contribute to amplify imaging signal output for unambiguous pin-pointing of tumors, tremendous efforts have been devoted to advances of contrast agents for MRI and multimodal imaging. Herein, we put special focus on summary of the most recent advances of not only MRI contrast agents including iron oxide-, manganese (Mn)-, gadolinium (Gd)-, 19F- and copper (Cu)-incorporated nanoplatforms for GBM imaging, but also dual-modal or triple-modal nanoprobes. Furthermore, potential obstacles and perspectives for future research and clinical translation of these contrast agents are discussed. We hope this review provides insights for scientists and students with interest in this area.
The gut microbiota is reportedly involved in the progression and chemoresistance of various human malignancies. However, the underlying mechanisms behind how it exerts some effect on prostate cancer, as an extra-intestinal tumor, in a contact-independent way remain elusive and deserve exploration. Antibiotic exposure, one of the various factors affecting the gut microbiota community and capable of causing gut dysbiosis, is associated with multiple disorders. This study aims to preliminarily clarify the link between gut dysbiosis and prostate cancer.

First, we discovered that perturbing the gut microbiota by consuming broad-spectrum antibiotics in water promoted the growth of subcutaneous and orthotopic tumors in mice. Fecal microbiota transplantation could transmit the effect of antibiotic exposure on tumor growth. Then, 16S rRNA sequencing for mouse feces indicated that the relative abundance of Proteobacteria was significantly higher after antibiotic exposure. There are increasing efforts for the integration of mental health services into primary care settings in low- and middle-income countries. However, commonly used approaches to train primary care providers (PCPs) may not achieve the expected outcomes for improved service delivery, as evidenced by low detection rates of mental illnesses after training. One contributor to this shortcoming is the stigma among PCPs. Implementation strategies for training PCPs that reduce stigma have the potential to improve the quality of services.

In Nepal, a type 3 hybrid implementation-effectiveness cluster randomized controlled trial will evaluate the implementation-as-usual training for PCPs compared to an alternative implementation strategy to train PCPs, entitled Reducing Stigma among Healthcare Providers (RESHAPE). In implementation-as-usual, PCPs are trained on the World Health Organization Mental Health Gap Action Program Intervention Guide (mhGAP-IG) with trainings conducted by mental health specialists. In RESHAPE, mhGAP-IG training includes the added component of facilitation by people with lived experience of mental illness (PWLE) and their caregivers using PhotoVoice, as well as aspirational figures.

Plant virus transmission by insects is a process that has evolved over time and is strongly influenced by insect morphological features and biology. Over the past century, a large body of research has provided detailed knowledge of the molecular processes underlying virus-vector interactions. Multiple studies have evaluated the accuracy of infarct volume (IV) as a predictor of outcome in patients with ischaemic stroke; however, no study has systematically reviewed the results of these studies.

This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to sum up the results of the studies evaluating IV as the prognostic criteria for patients with cerebral ischaemia.

Human studies that reported the infarction volume and any prognostic outcome in patients with ischaemic stroke were collected from PubMed, Scopus, Embase and Cochrane library databases. Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Checklist was applied to evaluate the quality of the included articles. 90-day modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score was used as a meta-analysis outcome. The area under the curve, sensitivity and specificity among included studies was evaluated. The heterogeneity of the studies was assessed by Cochran test Egger and Begg test was used for assessing publication bias.

Among the included studies, nine studies assessed the association between IV and outcome (90-day mRS score). The results of the meta-analysis revealed a significant association between IV with the unfavourable functional outcome (mRS score of 3-6) (OR=0.80; 95% CI 0.74-0.86 per 10mL, P<.001; I
=98.1%, P<.001). The infarction volume cut of point between 20 and 50mL showed the best sensitivity and specificity for the prediction of poor clinical outcomes in patients with ischaemic stroke.

Functional motor disorders (FMDs) are frequent and highly disabling conditions. Despite the substantial advances in FMDs diagnosis, mechanisms and treatments, their tangible application to care of patients with FMDs is yet to be established. We aimed to identify the main real-life gaps and barriers in FMDs care, faced by both patients and physicians, in two different European countries, Italy and Czechia.

A cross-cultural study was performed.

Both patients and physicians are face practical difficulties and pay a high price for the poor management of FMDs as a result of outdated classifications and insufficient education. This, in turn, has led to inadequate access to care and the existence of common misbeliefs regarding symptom severity or even suspicion of malingering. FMDs need to be integrated into national healthcare systems and in research priorities so that substantial cost savings can be achieved and appropriate care provided to patients.

The aim of our research was to investigate retrospectively the relationship between the symptoms and general characteristics, initial laboratory values and treatments in patients who had COVID-19 and who applied to the chest diseases outpatient clinic for control after 1month.

Three hundred fifteen patients who were diagnosed with COVID-19 and applied to the chest diseases outpatient clinic between May 2020 and August 2020 for control in the 1st month were included in the study. Patient information was collected from the hospital information system and the e-pulse system.

Females accounted for 50.2% of our patients and their mean age was 47.9±14.8 (19-88) years. About 14.3% (n 45) of the individuals were 65years of age and older, 20.6% (n 65) of our patients were smoking and 70.2% (n 221) of our patients were treated at home. A total of 133 patients had at least one comorbid disease. The patients most frequently reported cough, dyspnoea, weakness, myalgia and diarrhoea. The most common symptoms were coussion. Patients are informed that their symptoms may last for a long time, unnecessary hospital admissions can be avoided.
The aim was to investigate the neural correlates of impaired self-awareness of cognitive deficits (IACd) in non-demented patients with Parkinson's disease (PD).

This cross-sectional study enrolled 153 drug-naïve and non-demented PD patients who underwent brain magnetic resonance imaging, dopamine transporter (DAT) positron emission tomography, detailed neuropsychological testing, and the Cognitive Complaints Interview at baseline. Based on the presence of mild cognitive impairment and subjective cognitive complaints, patients were grouped into those with IACd (PD-IACd+, n=33) and those with normal recognition of cognitive function (n=82) or underestimation of cognitive function (n=38). Cortical thickness, white matter (WM) integrity, DAT availability and cognitive function were compared between the groups.

The prevalence of IACd was 21.6% in drug-naïve patients with PD. The PD-IACd+ group had a lower z-score in the Stroop color reading test than the other groups. Patients in the PD-IACd+ group had WM disintegrity, especially in the genu of the corpus callosum and anterior limb of the internal capsule, compared to those without IACd, whilst cortical thickness or striatal DAT availability was comparable regardless of the presence of IACd. Amongst patients with mild cognitive impairment, those with IACd had more severe WM disintegrity than those without IACd.

Similar inflammatory processes are observed in glaucomatous optic neuropathy, age-related macular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa, posterior uveitis, Alzheimer's disease, and Parkinson's disease. In particular, human and animal studies have demonstrated the important role microglia/macrophages play in initiating and maintaining a pro-inflammatory environment in degenerative processes impacting vision. On the other hand, microglia have also been shown to have a protective role in multiple central nervous system diseases. Identifying the mechanisms underlying cell dysfunction and death is the first step toward developing novel therapeutics for these diseases impacting the central nervous system. In addition to reviewing recent key studies defining important mediators of retinal inflammation, with an emphasis on translational studies that bridge this research from bench to bedside, we also highlight a promising therapeutic class of medications, the glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists. Finally, we propose areas where additional research is necessary to identify mechanisms that can be modulated to shift the balance from a neurotoxic to a neuroprotective retinal environment.Microbial communities are hugely diverse, but we do not yet understand how species invasions and extinctions drive and limit their diversity. On the one hand, the ecological limits hypothesis posits that diversity is primarily limited by environmental resources. On the other hand, the diversity-begets-diversity hypothesis posits that such limits can be easily lifted when new ecological niches are created by biotic interactions. To find out which hypothesis better explains the assembly of microbial communities, we used metabolic modelling. We represent each microbial species by a metabolic network that harbours thousands of biochemical reactions. Together, these reactions determine which carbon and energy sources a species can use, and which metabolic by-products-potential nutrients for other species-it can excrete in a given environment. We assemble communities by modelling thousands of species invasions in a chemostat-like environment. We find that early during the assembly process, diversity begets diversity.

Primary cell cultures from wild organisms have been gaining relevance in ecotoxicology as they are considered more sensitive than immortalized cell lines and retain the biochemical pathways found in vivo. In this study, the efficacy of two methods for primary hepatocyte cell isolation was compared using liver from two marine fish (Sparus aurata and Psetta maxima) (i) two-step collagenase perfusion and (ii) pancreatin digestion with modifications. Cell cultures were incubated in L-15 medium at 17 ± 1 °C and monitored for up to six days for cell viability and function using the trypan blue exclusion test, MTT test, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity, and ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase (EROD) activity after Benzo[a]Pyrene exposure. The results showed significant differences between the number of viable cells (p less then 0.05), the highest number being obtained for the pancreatin digestion method (average = 4.5 ± 1.9 × 107 cells). Moreover, the hepatocytes showed solid adherence to the culture plate and the rounded shape, changing into a triangular/polygonal shape. The cell viability and function obtained by pancreatin digestion were maintained for five days, and the EROD induction after exposure to the B[a]P showed that cells were metabolically active. This study shows that the optimized pancreatin digestion method is a valid, cost-effective, and simple alternative to the standard perfusion method for the isolation of primary hepatocytes from fish and is suitable for ecotoxicological studies involving marine pollutants, such as PAHs.Nutrition plays a fundamental role in the prevention and treatment of dyslipidemias and its oxidative-related complications. Currently, there is evidence about the beneficial effects of isolated antioxidants or foods enriched or added with antioxidant compounds. However, the application of the natural foods is more integrated than the analysis of a single nutrient. Our aim is compiling scientific literature regarding the nutritional strategies by foods with antioxidant effect in blood lipids, enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants, and oxidative and inflammatory markers of subjects with dyslipidemia. We searched in MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. From a total of 263 studies screened, 16 were included. Dietary strategies included walnuts, olive oil, raw almonds, G. paraguayase, white sesame, mate tea, Brazil nut flour, red wine, granulated Brazil nuts, grapes, wolfberry fruit, fermented beverage, coffee, orange, and blackberry juices showed significant differences in blood lipids, antioxidant activity, antioxidant enzymes, and oxidative and inflammatory markers. This systematic review compiling scientific studies about dietary strategies using foods with antioxidant effect to improve the antioxidant status in dyslipidemias.After the fall of communism, the healthcare systems of Central and Eastern European countries underwent enormous transformation, resulting in departure from publicly financed healthcare. This had significant adverse effects on equity in healthcare, which are still evident. In this paper, we analyzed the role of government and households in financing healthcare in eight countries (EU-8) Czechia, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, and Slovenia. A desk research method was applied to collect quantitative data on healthcare expenditures and qualitative data on gaps in universal health coverage. A linear regression analysis was used to analyze a trend in health expenditure over the years 2000-2018. Our results indicate that a high reliance on out-of-pocket payments persists in many EU-8 countries, and only a few countries have shown a significant downward trend over time. The gaps in universal coverage in the EU-8 countries are due to explicit rationing (a limited benefit package, patient cost sharing) and implicit mechanisms (wait times). There is need to increase the role of public financing in CEE countries through budget prioritization, reducing patient co-payments for medical products and medicines, and extending the benefit package for these goods, as well as improving the quality of care.The purpose of this pilot study was to assess the feasibility and acceptability of a mobile smoking cessation intervention in Puerto Rico. This was a single-arm pilot study with 26 smokers in Puerto Rico who were enrolled in Decídetexto, a mobile smoking cessation intervention. Decídetexto incorporates three integrated components (1) a tablet-based software that collects smoking-related information to develop an individualized quit plan, (2) a 24-week text messaging counseling program with interactive capabilities, and (3) pharmacotherapy support. Outcome measures included self-reported 7-day point prevalence abstinence at Months 3 and 6, pharmacotherapy adherence, satisfaction with the intervention, and changes in self-efficacy. The average age of the participants was 46.8 years (SD 12.7), half of them (53.8%) were female. Most participants (92.3%) smoked daily and half of them (53.8%) used menthol cigarettes. All participants requested nicotine patches at baseline. However, only 13.0% of participants used the patch >75% of days. At Month 3, 10 participants (38.4%) self-reported 7-day point prevalence abstinence (88.5% follow-up rate). At Month 6, 16 participants (61.5%) self-reported 7-day point prevalence abstinence (76.9% follow-up rate). Most participants (90%, 18/20) reported being satisfied/extremely satisfied with the intervention at Month 6. Self-efficacy mean scores significantly increased from 40.4 (SD 12.1) at baseline to 57.9 (SD 11.3) at Month 3 (p less then 0.01). The aim of the study was to assess the effects of ulipristal acetate (UPA) on fibroids, especially on estrogen receptor (ER) and progesterone receptor (PR) immunoexpression, proliferation, apoptosis and tissue fibrosis, and to compare the above parameters in untreated (surgical attention only) and UPA-treated leiomyomas. UPA-treated patients were divided into three groups (1) good response (≥25% reduction in volume of fibroid), (2) weak response (insignificant volume reduction) and (3) no response to treatment (no decrease or increase in fibroid volume). The study observed a significant decrease in the percentage of collagen volume fraction and ER and PR immunoexpression in the good response group, in the percentage of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA)- and Ki67-positive cells in the groups with good and weak reactions vs. control group; significantly higher apoptotic index (terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end-labeling (TUNEL)-positive cells) in the good reaction group vs. control group. One factor could be provider bias. We examined medical indications for cesarean delivery that involve a greater degree of physician discretion (more subjective) versus medical indications that involve less physician discretion (more objective) to better understand factors contributing to the higher rate among Micronesian, one of the most recent migrant groups in the state, compared to White women in Hawai'i. (2) Methods A retrospective chart review was conducted to collect data on 620 cesarean deliveries (N = 296 White and N = 324 Micronesian) at the state's largest maternity hospital. Multivariate regression models were used to examine associations between maternal and obstetric characteristics and (1) subjective indication defined as non-reassuring fetal heart tracing (NRFHT) and arrest of labor disorders, and (2) objective indication defined as all other indications (e.g., malpresentation). (3) Results We found that Micronesian women had significantly higher odds of cesarean delivery due to a subjective indication compared to White women (aOR 4.17; CI 2.52-6.88; P less then 0.001; N = 619) after adjusting for multiple covariates. (4) Conclusion These findings suggest unmeasured factors, possibly provider bias, may influence cesarean delivery recommendations for Micronesian women in Hawai'i.Background and Objectives The objective of this paper is to compare the visual outcomes and quality of life (QoL) after bilateral ultrathin Descemet's stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (UT-DSAEK) with bilateral penetrating keratoplasty (PK) for Fuchs' endothelial dystrophy (FED). Materials and Methods Retrospective comparative cohort study, including 11 patients with FED who underwent bilateral PK and 13 patients with FED who underwent bilateral UT-DSAEK. All patients were already pseudophakic or had undergone a combined cataract procedure. The main outcomes were corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) corneal higher-order aberrations (HOAs), contrast sensitivity (CS) and quality of life (QoL). Results The mean follow-up after the second eye surgery was 32.5 ± 10.2 months in PK and 19.6 ± 8.6 months in UT-DSAEK patients. The CDVA in the UT-DSAEK group was significantly better than in the PK one (0.18 ± 0.07 vs. 0.35 ± 0.16 logMAR, p less then 0.0001). The mean anterior corneal total HOAs of the central 5 mm were significantly lower in UT-DSAEK eyes than in PK eyes (0.438 ± 0.078 µ and 1.282 ± 0.330 µ respectively, p less then 0.0001), whilst the mean posterior total HOAs did not differ between groups (0.196 ± 0.056 µ and 0.231 ± 0.089 µ, respectively, p = 0.253). The CS was lower at 0.75 and 1.5 cycles/degree in P the K group when compared to the DSAEK one (p = 0.008 and 0.005, respectively). The QoL scores by the NEI RQL-42 test exhibited better values in DSAEK patients in 9 out of 13 scales. Conclusion Our study confirms that UT-DSAEK provides a better visual function in terms of CDVA and CS, together with lower HOAs, when compared to PK. The aim of this retrospective multicenter study was to analyze CEUS features of histologically proven HCC in patients with non-cirrhotic liver. In this multicenter study, 96 patients from eight medical institutions with histologically proven HCC lesions in non-cirrhotic liver were retrospectively reviewed regarding SonoVue-enhanced CEUS features. Two ultrasound experts assessed the CEUS enhancement pattern and came to a consensus using the World Federation of Societies for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology guideline criteria. The mean size of HCC lesions included was 60.3 ± 37.8 mm (mean ± standard deviation). Most of the lesions were heterogeneous but predominantly hypo-echoic on B-mode ultrasound (64.5%, 62/96), with ill-defined margins and irregular shapes. During the arterial phase of CEUS, most of the HCC lesions in non-cirrhotic liver exhibited heterogeneous hyperenhancement (78.1%, 75/96) compared with the surrounding liver parenchyma. Almost 30% of HCC lesions (28.1%, 27/96) exhibited early wash-out ( less then 60 s). All lesions exhibited wash-out and hypo-enhancement in the late phase. CEUS features of HCC lesions in non-cirrhotic patients typically include hyperenhancement in the arterial phase and relatively rapid wash-out in the portal venous phase, which is different from HCC in cirrhotic livers and more similar to liver metastasis.

We conducted a retrospective single-centre observational study of 250 adults in a UK academic tertiary hospital undergoing median sternotomy for non-emergent isolated aortic valve replacement. We characterised preoperative iron status using measurement of both plasma ferritin and soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR), and examined associations with clinical outcomes.

Measurement of plasma sTfR gave a prevalence of iron deficiency of 22%. The objective of this work was to test and validate the FISH technique on detached IHC slides. An IHC technique was first performed on 30 tissue samples. After detachment of the lamella, a FISH technique was then performed according to the usual protocol with a centromeric probe. A validation cohort (n=10) with duplicate testing using a traditional FISH technique and an IHC slide with a detached lamella was then carried out. Finally, a cohort of 20 "old" cases (IHC carried out over 2years ago) was also tested. Different types of probes (specific locus, break apart) have been used. All the slides were interpreted by a technician and a pathologist. Evaluation criteria were the general interpretability of the slide ; the percentage of labeled nuclei; intensity of the signal and the presence or absence of autofluorescence. FISH was interpretable in 100% of recently treated cases and 90% of "old" cases with a satisfactory intensity and a high percentage of labeled nuclei, without autofluorescence. The results of our study show that the reuse of IHC slides for performing FISH is a powerful means of economizing tissue samples, especially for small samples and in the absence of archived representative material.
Emergency general surgery (EGS) patients account for more than one-third of admissions to hospitals in the National Health Service (NHS) in England. The associated mortality of these patients has been quoted as approximately eight times higher than that of elective surgical admissions. This study used a modified Delphi approach to identify research priorities in EGS. The aim was to establish a research agenda using a formal consensus-based approach in an effort to identify questions relevant to EGS that could ultimately guide research to improve outcomes for this cohort.

Three rounds were conducted using an electronic questionnaire and involved health care professionals, research personnel, patients and their relatives. In the first round, stakeholders were invited to submit clinical research questions that they felt were priorities for future research. In rounds two and three, participants were asked to score individual questions in order of priority using a 5-point Likert scale. It is well documented that Canadian healthcare does not fully meet the health needs of First Nations, Inuit or Métis peoples. In 1996, the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples concluded that Indigenous peoples' healthcare needs had to be met by strategies and systems that emerged from Indigenous worldviews and cultures. In 2015, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission also called on health organizations to learn from Indigenous "knowledges" and integrate Indigenous worldviews alongside biomedicine and other western ways of knowing. These calls have not yet been met. Meanwhile, the dynamic of organizational learning from knowledges and evidence within communities is poorly understood-particularly when learning is from communities whose ways of knowing differ from those of the organization. Through an exploration of organizational and health system learning, this study will explore how organizations learn from the Indigenous communities they serve and contribute to (re-)conceptualizing the learning organizae, this study will help to identify and understand ways for organizations to learn from and respectfully apply knowledges and evidence held within Indigenous communities so that their health and wellness are supported. In this way, this study will help to guide health organizations in the listening and learning that is required to contribute to reconciliation in healthcare.

Due to the existence of formidable blood-brain barrier (BBB) and the aggressive growth and infiltrating nature of GBM, timely diagnosis and treatment of GBM is still very challenging. Among different imaging modalities, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with merits including high soft tissue resolution, non-invasiveness and non-limited penetration depth has become the preferred tool for GBM diagnosis. Furthermore, multimodal imaging with combination of MRI and other imaging modalities would not only synergistically integrate the pros, but also overcome the certain limitation in each imaging modality, offering more accurate morphological and pathophysiological information of brain tumors. Since contrast agents contribute to amplify imaging signal output for unambiguous pin-pointing of tumors, tremendous efforts have been devoted to advances of contrast agents for MRI and multimodal imaging. Herein, we put special focus on summary of the most recent advances of not only MRI contrast agents including iron oxide-, manganese (Mn)-, gadolinium (Gd)-, 19F- and copper (Cu)-incorporated nanoplatforms for GBM imaging, but also dual-modal or triple-modal nanoprobes. Furthermore, potential obstacles and perspectives for future research and clinical translation of these contrast agents are discussed. We hope this review provides insights for scientists and students with interest in this area.
The gut microbiota is reportedly involved in the progression and chemoresistance of various human malignancies. However, the underlying mechanisms behind how it exerts some effect on prostate cancer, as an extra-intestinal tumor, in a contact-independent way remain elusive and deserve exploration. Antibiotic exposure, one of the various factors affecting the gut microbiota community and capable of causing gut dysbiosis, is associated with multiple disorders. This study aims to preliminarily clarify the link between gut dysbiosis and prostate cancer.

First, we discovered that perturbing the gut microbiota by consuming broad-spectrum antibiotics in water promoted the growth of subcutaneous and orthotopic tumors in mice. Fecal microbiota transplantation could transmit the effect of antibiotic exposure on tumor growth. Then, 16S rRNA sequencing for mouse feces indicated that the relative abundance of Proteobacteria was significantly higher after antibiotic exposure. There are increasing efforts for the integration of mental health services into primary care settings in low- and middle-income countries. However, commonly used approaches to train primary care providers (PCPs) may not achieve the expected outcomes for improved service delivery, as evidenced by low detection rates of mental illnesses after training. One contributor to this shortcoming is the stigma among PCPs. Implementation strategies for training PCPs that reduce stigma have the potential to improve the quality of services.

In Nepal, a type 3 hybrid implementation-effectiveness cluster randomized controlled trial will evaluate the implementation-as-usual training for PCPs compared to an alternative implementation strategy to train PCPs, entitled Reducing Stigma among Healthcare Providers (RESHAPE). In implementation-as-usual, PCPs are trained on the World Health Organization Mental Health Gap Action Program Intervention Guide (mhGAP-IG) with trainings conducted by mental health specialists. In RESHAPE, mhGAP-IG training includes the added component of facilitation by people with lived experience of mental illness (PWLE) and their caregivers using PhotoVoice, as well as aspirational figures.

This cell division is regulated by fate determinants, such as the NUMB protein, which recently has also been confirmed as a tumor suppressor. Loss of NUMB expression leads to uncontrolled proliferation and amplification of the CSC pool, which promotes the Notch signaling pathway and reduces the expression of the p53 protein. NUMB genes are alternatively spliced to produce six functionally distinct isoforms. An interesting recent discovery is that the protein NUMB isoform produced by alternative splicing of NUMB plays an important role in promoting carcinogenesis. In the course of the research, it was found that the medicine certainly does not come from authorized production sources, as evidenced by accurate label comparisons.A high proportion of hospitalizations is attributable to the prevalence of adverse drug events. This retrospective study included outpatients and inpatients to determine the prevalence of adverse drug events and if polypharmacy increases it. The prevalence, classification, and causality of adverse drug events were assessed based on medical records, laboratory values, and other data. Multivariate analysis (multiple logistic regression analysis) was performed with the presence or absence of adverse drug events at the time of the visit as the dependent variable and items for which the P-value was less then 0.25 in the univariate analysis as independent variables. The prevalence of adverse drug events was 13.0%, 10.9%, and 16.0% among all patients, the outpatient group, and the inpatient group, respectively. Multivariate analysis showed that polypharmacy (≥5 drugs) significantly increased the risk of adverse drug events in all patients. The prevalence of adverse drug events significantly increased with each additional drug used. We expect that minimizing the number of medications through moderation of the number of prescription drugs and elimination of polypharmacy will reduce the number of outpatient visits and hospitalizations due to adverse drug events.The objective of this study was to determine the number of patients on the national level that took macrolide antibiotics along with chronic statin therapy in Croatia in the period from 2002 to 2015, and to analyse prescription patterns. In 2002, statins were used in the treatment of 2.6% of the total number of insured persons in Croatia. By 2015, this number increased to 8.4%. In the period studied, on average 15.3% of the patients on statin therapy were co-prescribed macrolide antibiotics. Erythromycin was combined with different statins on average in 1.4% of cases, clarithromycin in 25.5% and azithromycin in 73.2% of the cases. Relative frequency of combining statins with macrolides was similar for all statins. On average, 11.5% of patients on concomitant statin-macrolide therapy were taking high-dose statins. On average, 90% of these co-prescriptions can lead to potentially clinically significant DDIs (X, D, C). The co-prescription of statins and macrolide antibiotics in the Republic of Croatia is increasing.

This study evaluates cardiovascular endurance, core endurance, body awareness, and the quality of life in normal-weight women with polycystic ovary syndrome.

This study included a total of 101 normal-weight women (51 with and 50 without polycystic ovary syndrome). Cardiovascular endurance was evaluated with the 20-meter Shuttle Run test, and maximum oxygen consumption was calculated. Core endurance was evaluated with core stability tests, body awareness with the body awareness questionnaire, and the quality of life with short form-36. Blood lipids, glucose, insulin, homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), hormonal profile, and high-density and low-density lipoprotein cholesterols were measured.

Maximum oxygen consumption, core endurance, body awareness questionnaire, and short form-36 results were lower in women with polycystic ovary syndrome than healthy women (p<0.05). There was a significant correlation between core endurance tests, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, maximum oxygen consumption, and homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance scores (p<0.05).

When normal-weight women with polycystic ovary syndrome and control groups with similar androgen levels and body mass index profiles were compared, women with polycystic ovary syndrome had lower aerobic capacity and muscle endurance. This suggests that the adverse metabolic profile of polycystic ovary syndrome can limit physical function.

However, the ever-increasing number of patients has overwhelmed radiology departments and has caused a reduction in quality of services. Artificial intelligence (AI) systems are the remedy to the current situation. However, the lack of application in real-world conditions has limited their consideration in clinical settings. This study validated a clinical AI system, COVIDiag, to aid radiologists in accurate and rapid evaluation of COVID-19 cases. 50 COVID-19 and 50 non-COVID-19 pneumonia cases were included from each of five centers Argentina, Turkey, Iran, Netherlands, and Italy. The Dutch database included only 50 COVID-19 cases. The performance parameters namely sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, and area under the ROC curve (AUC) were computed for each database using COVIDiag model. The most common pattern of involvement among COVID-19 cases in all databases were bilateral involvement of upper and lower lobes with ground-glass opacities. The best sensitivity of 92.0% was recorded for the Italian database. The system achieved an AUC of 0.983, 0.914, 0.910, and 0.882 for Argentina, Turkey, Iran, and Italy, respectively. The model obtained a sensitivity of 86.0% for the Dutch database. COVIDiag model could diagnose COVID-19 pneumonia in all of cohorts with AUC of 0.921 (sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of 88.8%, 87.0%, and 88.0%, respectively). Our study confirmed the accuracy of our proposed AI model (COVIDiag) in the diagnosis of COVID-19 cases. Movement restrictions may have influenced the ability of the public to contribute to citizen science projects. We investigated how stay-at-home orders affected data submitted by birdwatchers in Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom (UK) to a widely-used citizen science platform, iNaturalist, depending on whether observations were collected in urban or non-urban areas. We found significant trends in the daily number of observations in all three countries, indicating a surge in urban observation during lockdowns. We found an increase in the mean daily number of urban observations during the lockdown in Italy and Spain, compared to previous years. The mean daily number of non-urban observations decreased in Italy and Spain, while remained similar to previous years in the UK. We found a general decrease of new records during the lockdowns both in urban and non-urban areas in all countries. Our results suggest that the citizen science community remained active during the lockdowns and kept reporting birds from home. However, limitations to movements may have hampered the possibility of birdwatchers to explore natural areas and collect new records. Our findings suggest that future research and conservation applications of citizen science data should carefully consider the bias and gaps in data series caused by the pandemic. Furthermore, our study highlights the potential of urban areas for nature activities, such as birdwatching, and its relevance for sustainable urban planning.Millions of wild animals are killed annually on roads worldwide. During spring 2020, the volume of road traffic was reduced globally as a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic. We gathered data on wildlife-vehicle collisions (WVC) from Czechia, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Israel, Norway, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and for Scotland and England within the United Kingdom. In all studied countries WVC statistics tend to be dominated by large mammals (various deer species and wild boar), while information on smaller mammals as well as birds are less well recorded. The expected number of WVC for 2020 was predicted on the basis of 2015-2019 WVC time series representing expected WVC numbers under normal traffic conditions.
