To assess the prevalence and trends of congenital anomalies among neonates admitted at Jimma Medical Center from 2017 to 2019.

A facility-based retrospective, descriptive crossectional study was conducted among neonates admitted at Jimma Medical Center from 2017-2019. Descriptive analysis (frequency and percentage) was calculated for the variables. The result was present in the table, text, and figure.

From a total of 3346 admitted neonates, 199 (5.95%) neonates were diagnosed with congenital anomalies; of which 120 (60.3%), 146 (73.4%), 144 (72.4%) and 30 (15.1%) of neonates were males, urban dwellers, delivered with normal birth weight and had multiple congenital anomalies, respectively.

Surface ozone is a severe air pollution problem in the North China Plain, which is home to 300 million people. Ozone concentrations are highest in summer, driven by fast photochemical production of hydrogen oxide radicals (HOx) that can overcome the radical titration caused by high emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) from fuel combustion. Ozone has been very low during winter haze (particulate) pollution episodes. However, the abrupt decrease of NOx emissions following the COVID-19 lockdown in January 2020 reveals a switch to fast ozone production during winter haze episodes with maximum daily 8-h average (MDA8) ozone concentrations of 60 to 70 parts per billion. We reproduce this switch with the GEOS-Chem model, where the fast production of ozone is driven by HOx radicals from photolysis of formaldehyde, overcoming radical titration from the decreased NOx emissions. Formaldehyde is produced by oxidation of reactive volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which have very high emissions in the North China Plain. This remarkable switch to an ozone-producing regime in January-February following the lockdown illustrates a more general tendency from 2013 to 2019 of increasing winter-spring ozone in the North China Plain and increasing association of high ozone with winter haze events, as pollution control efforts have targeted NOx emissions (30% decrease) while VOC emissions have remained constant. Decreasing VOC emissions would avoid further spreading of severe ozone pollution events into the winter-spring season.The first Caribbean settlers were Amerindians from South America. Great Abaco and Grand Bahama, the final islands colonized in the northernmost Bahamas, were inhabited by the Lucayans when Europeans arrived. The timing of Lucayan arrival in the northern Bahamas has been uncertain because direct archaeological evidence is limited. We document Lucayan arrival on Great Abaco Island through a detailed record of vegetation, fire, and landscape dynamics based on proxy data from Blackwood Sinkhole. From about 3,000 to 1,000 y ago, forests dominated by hardwoods and palms were resilient to the effects of hurricanes and cooling sea surface temperatures. The arrival of Lucayans by about 830 CE (2σ range 720 to 920 CE) is demarcated by increased burning and followed by landscape disturbance and a time-transgressive shift from hardwoods and palms to the modern pine forest. Considering that Lucayan settlements in the southern Bahamian archipelago are dated to about 750 CE (2σ range 600 to 900 CE), these results demonstrate that Lucayans spread rapidly through the archipelago in less than 100 y. Although precontact landscapes would have been influenced by storms and climatic trends, the most pronounced changes follow more directly from landscape burning and ecosystem shifts after Lucayan arrival. The pine forests of Abaco declined substantially between 1500 and 1670 CE, a period of increased regional hurricane activity, coupled with fires on an already human-impacted landscape. Any future intensification of hurricane activity in the tropical North Atlantic Ocean threatens the sustainability of modern pine forests in the northern Bahamas.Various neuromodulation approaches have been employed to alter neuronal spiking activity and thus regulate brain functions and alleviate neurological disorders. Infrared neural stimulation (INS) could be a potential approach for neuromodulation because it requires no tissue contact and possesses a high spatial resolution. However, the risk of overheating and an unclear mechanism hamper its application. Here we show that midinfrared stimulation (MIRS) with a specific wavelength exerts nonthermal, long-distance, and reversible modulatory effects on ion channel activity, neuronal signaling, and sensorimotor behavior. Patch-clamp recording from mouse neocortical pyramidal cells revealed that MIRS readily provides gain control over spiking activities, inhibiting spiking responses to weak inputs but enhancing those to strong inputs. MIRS also shortens action potential (AP) waveforms by accelerating its repolarization, through an increase in voltage-gated K+ (but not Na+) currents. Molecular dynamics simulations further revealed that MIRS-induced resonance vibration of -C=O bonds at the K+ channel ion selectivity filter contributes to the K+ current increase. Importantly, these effects are readily reversible and independent of temperature increase. At the behavioral level in larval zebrafish, MIRS modulates startle responses by sharply increasing the slope of the sensorimotor input-output curve. Therefore, MIRS represents a promising neuromodulation approach suitable for clinical application.The recently elucidated proresolving conjugates in tissue regeneration (CTR) maresin-CTR (MCTR), protectin-CTR (PCTR), and resolvin-CTR (RCTR), termed cysteinyl-specialized proresolving mediators (cys-SPMs) each promotes regeneration, controls infection, and accelerates resolution of inflammation. Here, we sought evidence for cys-SPM activation of primordial pathways in planaria (Dugesia japonica) regeneration that might link resolution of inflammation and regeneration. On surgical resection, planaria regeneration was enhanced with MCTR3, PCTR3, or RCTR3 (10 nM), each used for RNA sequencing. The three cys-SPMs shared up-regulation of 175 known transcripts with fold-change > 1.25 and combined false discovery rate (FDR) less then 0.002, and 199 canonical pathways (FDR less then 0.25), including NF-κB pathways and an ortholog of human TRAF3 (TNFR-associated factor 3). Three separate pathway analyses converged on TRAF3 up-regulation by cys-SPMs. With human macrophages, three cys-SPMs each dose-dependently increased TRAF3 expression in a cAMP-PKA-dependent manner. To identify the possible latent classes of health behaviour reported by people at high risk of stroke and to explore the predictors of these different classes of health behaviour.

A cross-sectional survey study.

A stratified cluster random sampling method was used to collect data from 2,500 individuals at high risk of stroke who were from Henan Province, China, from January 2018-January 2019. A latent class profile analysis was used to identify the health behaviour clusters and multinomial logistic regression was used to determine which factors predicted the emergent latent classes of health behaviour.

High-risk individuals (N=2,236) at high risk of stroke replied to the survey (89.44% response rate). Model fit indices (AIC=257,509.610, BIC=260,228.733, Entropy=0.956) supported a three-class model of health behaviours. The latent classes were Class 1 (a good level of adaptive health behaviour, 31%, N=693), Class 2 (a moderate level of adaptive health behaviour, 36%, N=805) and Class 3 (a poor level of to promote health behaviour for each different subgroup.
This study has significance for the promotion of adaptive health behaviour in individuals at high risk of stroke. It has allowed the identification of specific clusters of health behaviour that vary in terms of their adaptiveness and forms the basis for the development of a targeted intervention to promote health behaviour for each different subgroup.
Standard subcutaneous low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) thromboprophylaxis yields low anti-factor Xa activity in patients in the intensive care unit (ICU). The aim of the study was to assess coagulation status in ICU patients randomized to receive enoxaparin thromboprophylaxis either as a standard subcutaneous bolus (SCB) or continuous intravenous infusion (CII) for 3 consecutive days after the initiation of LMWH thromboprophylaxis.

Thirty-eight patients were studied by conventional coagulation variables prothrombin fragment F 1+2 (F 1+2) representing FXa inhibition and antithrombin (AT). Additionally, 18 patients were analyzed by the thrombin generation assay-calibrated automated thrombogram (TGA-CAT). Blood samples were collected before the initiation of the LMWH thromboprophylaxis (ie, baseline), at 51 h, and at 72 h.

At beginning, no differences in coagulation biomarkers were observed. The levels of F 1+2 were significantly lower at 51 and 72 h in the CII group than in the SCB group. AT levels increased during the follow-up in the CII group, unlike in the SCB group. TGA-CAT was poor in some patients overall. In a subset of patients at 51 h lag time (4.3 vs 7.5 min, respectively, P < 0.05) and time to peak (7.7 vs 14.3 min, respectively, P < 0.05) were prolonged in the SCB group. At 72 h, however, peak thrombin was lower in the CII than in the SCB group 271 vs 356 nM, respectively (P < 0.05).

We investigated the prevalence of non-medical use (NMU) of benzodiazepines and GABA analogues in Europe.

Data were collected using the online Non-Medical Use of Prescription Drugs (NMURx) survey from France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK.

The study included 55 223 eligible surveys which, after post-stratification weights were applied, represented approximately 260 million European adults. Lifetime NMU of benzodiazepines was highest in Spain (6.5%, 95% CI 6.0-7.0) and lowest in Germany (1.7%, 1.5-2.0). Lifetime NMU of GABA analogues was highest in Germany (5.4%, 5.0-5.7) and lowest in France (2.2%, 1.9-2.5) and the UK (2.2%, 1.9-2.6) While no notable difference was observed for France or the UK, there was a higher prevalence of last 12-month NMU of benzodiazepines compared to GABA analogues in Italy (2.4 times higher) and Spain (3.0 times higher) and a higher prevalence of NMU of GABA analogues compared to benzodiazepines in Germany (2.6 times higher).

This study shows that there is variation in NMU of benzodiazepines and GABA analogues among countries. Of particular interest is the high incidence of GABA analogue NMU in Germany and benzodiazepine NMU in Spain. Further research to identify factors and motivations responsible for the higher prevalence observed are essential to inform public health policies in those countries.

Here we demonstrate that smalltooth sawfish are physiologically capable of reproducing annually in a captive environment. The smalltooth sawfish are held in an open system, with abiotic conditions that vary naturally with the surrounding environment in The Bahamas. This suggests wild smalltooth sawfish may also be capable of annual reproduction provided there are adequate prey resources, limited competition and mate availability.

From about 3,000 to 1,000 y ago, forests dominated by hardwoods and palms were resilient to the effects of hurricanes and cooling sea surface temperatures. The arrival of Lucayans by about 830 CE (2σ range 720 to 920 CE) is demarcated by increased burning and followed by landscape disturbance and a time-transgressive shift from hardwoods and palms to the modern pine forest. Considering that Lucayan settlements in the southern Bahamian archipelago are dated to about 750 CE (2σ range 600 to 900 CE), these results demonstrate that Lucayans spread rapidly through the archipelago in less than 100 y. Although precontact landscapes would have been influenced by storms and climatic trends, the most pronounced changes follow more directly from landscape burning and ecosystem shifts after Lucayan arrival. The pine forests of Abaco declined substantially between 1500 and 1670 CE, a period of increased regional hurricane activity, coupled with fires on an already human-impacted landscape. Any future intensification of hurricane activity in the tropical North Atlantic Ocean threatens the sustainability of modern pine forests in the northern Bahamas.Various neuromodulation approaches have been employed to alter neuronal spiking activity and thus regulate brain functions and alleviate neurological disorders. Infrared neural stimulation (INS) could be a potential approach for neuromodulation because it requires no tissue contact and possesses a high spatial resolution. However, the risk of overheating and an unclear mechanism hamper its application. Here we show that midinfrared stimulation (MIRS) with a specific wavelength exerts nonthermal, long-distance, and reversible modulatory effects on ion channel activity, neuronal signaling, and sensorimotor behavior. Patch-clamp recording from mouse neocortical pyramidal cells revealed that MIRS readily provides gain control over spiking activities, inhibiting spiking responses to weak inputs but enhancing those to strong inputs. MIRS also shortens action potential (AP) waveforms by accelerating its repolarization, through an increase in voltage-gated K+ (but not Na+) currents. Molecular dynamics simulations further revealed that MIRS-induced resonance vibration of -C=O bonds at the K+ channel ion selectivity filter contributes to the K+ current increase. Importantly, these effects are readily reversible and independent of temperature increase. At the behavioral level in larval zebrafish, MIRS modulates startle responses by sharply increasing the slope of the sensorimotor input-output curve. To identify the possible latent classes of health behaviour reported by people at high risk of stroke and to explore the predictors of these different classes of health behaviour.

A cross-sectional survey study.

A stratified cluster random sampling method was used to collect data from 2,500 individuals at high risk of stroke who were from Henan Province, China, from January 2018-January 2019. A latent class profile analysis was used to identify the health behaviour clusters and multinomial logistic regression was used to determine which factors predicted the emergent latent classes of health behaviour.

High-risk individuals (N=2,236) at high risk of stroke replied to the survey (89.44% response rate). Model fit indices (AIC=257,509.610, BIC=260,228.733, Entropy=0.956) supported a three-class model of health behaviours. The latent classes were Class 1 (a good level of adaptive health behaviour, 31%, N=693), Class 2 (a moderate level of adaptive health behaviour, 36%, N=805) and Class 3 (a poor level of to promote health behaviour for each different subgroup.
This study has significance for the promotion of adaptive health behaviour in individuals at high risk of stroke. It has allowed the identification of specific clusters of health behaviour that vary in terms of their adaptiveness and forms the basis for the development of a targeted intervention to promote health behaviour for each different subgroup.
Standard subcutaneous low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) thromboprophylaxis yields low anti-factor Xa activity in patients in the intensive care unit (ICU). The aim of the study was to assess coagulation status in ICU patients randomized to receive enoxaparin thromboprophylaxis either as a standard subcutaneous bolus (SCB) or continuous intravenous infusion (CII) for 3 consecutive days after the initiation of LMWH thromboprophylaxis.

Thirty-eight patients were studied by conventional coagulation variables prothrombin fragment F 1+2 (F 1+2) representing FXa inhibition and antithrombin (AT). Additionally, 18 patients were analyzed by the thrombin generation assay-calibrated automated thrombogram (TGA-CAT). Blood samples were collected before the initiation of the LMWH thromboprophylaxis (ie, baseline), at 51 h, and at 72 h.

At beginning, no differences in coagulation biomarkers were observed. The levels of F 1+2 were significantly lower at 51 and 72 h in the CII group than in the SCB group. AT levels increased during the follow-up in the CII group, unlike in the SCB group. TGA-CAT was poor in some patients overall. In a subset of patients at 51 h lag time (4.3 vs 7.5 min, respectively, P < 0.05) and time to peak (7.7 vs 14.3 min, respectively, P < 0.05) were prolonged in the SCB group. At 72 h, however, peak thrombin was lower in the CII than in the SCB group 271 vs 356 nM, respectively (P < 0.05).

We investigated the prevalence of non-medical use (NMU) of benzodiazepines and GABA analogues in Europe.

Data were collected using the online Non-Medical Use of Prescription Drugs (NMURx) survey from France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK.

The study included 55 223 eligible surveys which, after post-stratification weights were applied, represented approximately 260 million European adults. Lifetime NMU of benzodiazepines was highest in Spain (6.5%, 95% CI 6.0-7.0) and lowest in Germany (1.7%, 1.5-2.0). Lifetime NMU of GABA analogues was highest in Germany (5.4%, 5.0-5.7) and lowest in France (2.2%, 1.9-2.5) and the UK (2.2%, 1.9-2.6) While no notable difference was observed for France or the UK, there was a higher prevalence of last 12-month NMU of benzodiazepines compared to GABA analogues in Italy (2.4 times higher) and Spain (3.0 times higher) and a higher prevalence of NMU of GABA analogues compared to benzodiazepines in Germany (2.6 times higher).

This study shows that there is variation in NMU of benzodiazepines and GABA analogues among countries. Of particular interest is the high incidence of GABA analogue NMU in Germany and benzodiazepine NMU in Spain. Further research to identify factors and motivations responsible for the higher prevalence observed are essential to inform public health policies in those countries.

Here we demonstrate that smalltooth sawfish are physiologically capable of reproducing annually in a captive environment. The smalltooth sawfish are held in an open system, with abiotic conditions that vary naturally with the surrounding environment in The Bahamas. This suggests wild smalltooth sawfish may also be capable of annual reproduction provided there are adequate prey resources, limited competition and mate availability.

Real-world decisions are often open ended, with goals, choice options, or evaluation criteria conceived by decision-makers themselves. Critically, the quality of decisions may heavily rely on the generation of options, as failure to generate promising options limits, or even eliminates, the opportunity for choosing them. This core aspect of problem structuring, however, is largely absent from classical models of decision-making, thereby restricting their predictive scope. Here, we take a step toward addressing this issue by developing a neurally inspired cognitive model of a class of ill-structured decisions in which choice options must be self-generated. Specifically, using a model in which semantic memory retrieval is assumed to constrain the set of options available during valuation, we generate highly accurate out-of-sample predictions of choices across multiple categories of goods. Our model significantly and substantially outperforms models that only account for valuation or retrieval in isolation or those that make alternative mechanistic assumptions regarding their interaction. Furthermore, using neuroimaging, we confirm our core assumption regarding the engagement of, and interaction between, semantic memory retrieval and valuation processes. Together, these results provide a neurally grounded and mechanistic account of decisions with self-generated options, representing a step toward unraveling cognitive mechanisms underlying adaptive decision-making in the real world.The Knl1-Mis12-Ndc80 (KMN) network is an essential component of the kinetochore-microtubule attachment interface, which is required for genomic stability in eukaryotes. Our model couples cytosolic stiffness to nuclear mechanics to replicate existing experimental trends, and extends beyond current data to predict that increasing substrate activation area through changes in culture dimensionality, while conserving cell volume, forces distinct shape changes that result in nonlinear effect on YAP/TAZ nuclear localization. Moreover, differences in substrate activation area versus total membrane area can account for counterintuitive trends in YAP/TAZ nuclear localization in 3D culture. Based on this multiscale investigation of the different system features of YAP/TAZ nuclear translocation, we predict that how a cell reads its environment is a complex information transfer function of multiple mechanical and biochemical factors. These predictions reveal a few design principles of cellular and tissue engineering for YAP/TAZ mechanotransduction.To investigate the origins and stages of vertebrate adaptive radiation, we reconstructed the spatial and temporal histories of adaptive alleles underlying major phenotypic axes of diversification from the genomes of 202 Caribbean pupfishes. On a single Bahamian island, ancient standing variation from disjunct geographic sources was reassembled into new combinations under strong directional selection for adaptation to the novel trophic niches of scale-eating and molluscivory. We found evidence for two longstanding hypotheses of adaptive radiation hybrid swarm origins and temporal stages of adaptation. Using a combination of population genomics, transcriptomics, and genome-wide association mapping, we demonstrate that this microendemic adaptive radiation of novel trophic specialists on San Salvador Island, Bahamas experienced twice as much adaptive introgression as generalist populations on neighboring islands and that adaptive divergence occurred in stages. First, standing regulatory variation in genes associated with feeding behavior (prlh, cfap20, and rmi1) were swept to fixation by selection, then standing regulatory variation in genes associated with craniofacial and muscular development (itga5, ext1, cyp26b1, and galr2) and finally the only de novo nonsynonymous substitution in an osteogenic transcription factor and oncogene (twist1) swept to fixation most recently. Our results demonstrate how ancient alleles maintained in distinct environmental refugia can be assembled into new adaptive combinations and provide a framework for reconstructing the spatiotemporal landscape of adaptation and speciation.

The aim of the comparison was to determine whether the methods produce equivalent results and, if not, which method is the most appropriate for use in moss biomonitoring surveys. The data used corresponded to 146 samples of Pseudoscleropodium purum collected from a regular sampling grid of 15 × 15 km in Galicia (NW Spain). Comparison of the methods revealed that, although they yield relatively similar results, the corresponding interpretations are not equivalent and none of the methods provides a reliable estimate of the soil contribution to the concentrations of elements in moss samples. Independently of the technique applied, use of Ti as a reference element is not recommended, because, at least in this study, it was present at unusually high levels in moss. Given the absence of a reliable correction method and the fact that most elements are present in fairly high amounts in the soil, we recommend using atmospheric biomonitoring with moss only for Cu, Zn and Cd, i.e. for those elements in moss for which the soil contributes very low amounts and corrections are not therefore necessary.Nitrogen (N) deposition and fertilization, which represent key sources of N input in many terrestrial ecosystems, influence all levels of the ecosystem and involve complex mechanisms. Quantitative and modelling approaches can be used to understand this complexity. In this study, we carried out in situ N addition experiments in a Stipa krylovii steppe in northern China. We evaluated the effects of N addition on plant diversity and productivity under two scenarios (fertilization and simulated increased N deposition) using a structural equation model (SEM). N addition had direct effects on community weighted means (CWM) of plant functional traits and soil properties but had indirect effects on community structure. The changes in community structure and soil properties caused by N addition decreased plant diversity, whereas productivity remained relatively stable and was mainly controlled by changes in community structure. The changes in soil properties and plant diversity caused by N addition had little effect on productivity or soil pH. We conclude that the changes in plant diversity and productivity with increased N input in the S. krylovii steppe were mainly due to differences in growth responses of different species to increased N and the resulting community responses, such as changes in community structure. The results of the present study provide a theoretical basis for grassland management and conservation in the wake of global environmental change.How varying levels of human activity, such as proximity and size of the nearest market (i.e., market gravity), influence the nutritional ecology and physiological condition of highly migratory marine predators is poorly understood. In the present study, we used a non-lethal approach to compare the concentration of metabolic hormones (i.e. corticosteroids and thyroid hormones) and plasma fatty acids between juvenile female tiger sharks (Galeocerdo cuvier) sampled in two areas of the subtropical north Atlantic, which differed markedly in their levels of coastal urbanization, Florida and the Bahamas (high versus low, respectively). We hypothesized that juvenile female tiger sharks sampled in water surrounding high coastal urbanization (Florida), would exhibit evidence of lower prey quality and higher energetic demands as compared to individuals sampled in relatively less urbanized areas of Northern Bahamas. Results revealed that relative corticosteroid levels (a proxy for energy mobilization) were higher in juvenile female tiger sharks sampled in Florida; however, no differences were found in concentrations of thyroid hormones (proxies of energetic adjustments) between the two locations. We found higher percentages of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (indicative of high prey quality) in juvenile tiger sharks from Florida, whereas higher percentages of bacterial markers (often indicative of domestic sewage effluent) were detected in the individuals sampled in the Bahamas. Taken together, these findings do not suggest that the differences in nutritional quality and metabolic condition found between the two sampling locations can be fully attributed to foraging in areas exposed to differing levels of urbanization. We speculate that these patterns may be due to the highly migratory nature and generalist feeding strategy of this species, even at the juvenile life stage, as well as proximity of sampling locations from shore.Urban areas represent a spectrum that goes from being safe habitats for biodiversity (i.e., habitats more or equally preferred, without costs to fitness) to being ecological traps (i.e., habitats more or equally preferred, but with costs to fitness). We systematically review the urban ecology literature to analyze how much do we know about the role of urban areas as ecological traps. Using a formal meta-analytical approach, we test whether urban areas are functioning as ecological traps or as safe habitats for different taxonomic groups. We generated a data set of 646 effect sizes of different measures of habitat preferences and fitness from 38 papers published between 1985 and 2020. The data set covered 15 countries and 47 urban areas from four continents, including 29 animal species. Studies from North America and Europe were best represented, and birds were the most studied taxa.
