The burden of adolescent depression is high in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), yet research into prevention is lacking. Development and validation of models to predict individualized risk of depression among adolescents in LMICs is rare but crucial to ensure appropriate targeting of preventive interventions. We assessed the ability of a model developed in Brazil, a middle-income country, to predict depression in an existing culturally different adolescent cohort from Nepal, a low-income country with a large youth population with high rates of depression. Data were utilized from the longitudinal study of 258 former child soldiers matched with 258 war-affected civilian adolescents in Nepal. Prediction modelling techniques were employed to predict individualized risk of depression at age 18 or older in the Nepali cohort using a penalized logistic regression model. Following a priori exclusions for prior depression and age, 55 child soldiers and 71 war-affected civilians were included in the final analysis. The model was well calibrated, had good overall performance, and achieved good discrimination between depressed and non-depressed individuals with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.73 (bootstrap-corrected 95% confidence interval 0.62-0.83). The Brazilian model comprising seven matching sociodemographic predictors, was able to stratify individualized risk of depression in a Nepali adolescent cohort. Further testing of the model's performance in larger socio-culturally diverse samples in other geographical regions should be attempted to test the model's wider generalizability.In the original article, incorrect Table 1 was published. Adult male MetS mice were randomized to receive vehicle solvent or tadalafil (1 mg/kg,i.p.) daily for 28 days and C57BL/6NCrl mice served as healthy wild-type controls. After 28 days, cardiac function was assessed by echocardiography and hearts from a subset of mice were isolated and subjected to 30 min of global ischemia followed by 60 min of reperfusion (I/R) in ex vivo Langendorff mode. Body weight, blood lipids, and glucose levels were elevated in MetS mice as compared with wild-type controls. The dyslipidemia in MetS was ameliorated following tadalafil treatment. Although left ventricular (LV) systolic function was minimally altered in the MetS mice, there was a significant diastolic dysfunction as indicated by reduction in the ratio of peak velocity of early to late filling of the mitral inflow, which was significantly improved by tadalafil treatment. Post-ischemic cardiac function, heart rate, and coronary flow decreased significantly in MetS mice compared to wild-type controls, but preserved by tadalafil treatment. Myocardial infarct size was significantly smaller following I/R, which was associated with higher plasma levels of nitrate and nitrite in the tadalafil-treated MetS mice. To perform a scoping review of the evidence for therapeutic interventions to manage functional impairments associated with Rett syndrome (RTT) throughout the lifespan.

MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, CENTRAL, CINAHL, Scopus and Index to Chiropractic Literature were searched systematically up to December 2019. Two investigators independently reviewed all search results and extracted those that met the inclusion criteria. Human and animal model studies pertaining to therapies that increase functional ability or treat RTT-associated symptoms in all age groups were included. Relevant studies were grouped into intervention categories and rated using the Oxford Centre of Evidence Based Medicine Levels of Evidence. Demographics of participants, interventions, and outcomes were summarized.

Ninety-one articles representing 88 studies met the inclusion criteria, of which 80 were human clinical studies and eight were studies using animal models. Study designs were primarily case series and only six studies involved participants above the age of 40.

Brazil is a large country with an elevated incidence of Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) during pregnancy and variable access to health care. The objective of the study was to identify ophthalmia neonatorum prophylaxis practices in the country.

A prospective multidisciplinary survey was conducted using a closed social media group. Fifteen questions were developed after literature review. Specific content included categorization of respondents and practices such as type of medication, age at administration, occurrence of clinical and/or chemical conjunctivitis and microbiology identification. Questions were multiple choice, but some allowed written response.

A total of 1.015 professionals responded, representing 24 states (92%) and 181 cities; mainly neonatologists (64%) and general pediatricians (21%). 96% of respondents reported performing prophylaxis at their institutions, mostly at birth or <1 h of life (99%), and regardless the mode of delivery (73%). Frequently used medications are 1% silver nitrate (64%), 2.5% povidone iodine (18%) or 10% silver vitelinate (12%), with some regional variations. Occurrence of chemical conjunctivitis was stated by 58% of the respondents and microbiology identification was unusual.

Parent-completed tools like the Ages and Stages Questionnaire Third Edition (ASQ-3) are important in developmental screening. As a screening tool, a high negative predictive value (NPV) is critical to avoid missing the diagnosis of developmental delay. This study evaluated the NPV and accuracy of the ASQ-3 in assessing the development of preterm infants.

Infants born at <32 weeks and/or <1250 grams, presented to the Neonatal Neurodevelopmental Clinic at the Singapore General Hospital for follow-up from January 2014 -June 2017, at 6, 12, and 18 months corrected age, were included. The ASQ-3 and standardized tests -Peabody Developmental Motor Scale -Second Edition (PDMS-2) and Preschool Language Scale, Fourth Edition UK (PLS-4 UK) -were administered. ASQ-3 gross motor and fine motor scores were compared to PDMS-2 at 6 and 12 months, and ASQ-3 communication scores to PLS-4 UK at 18 months.

At 6 months (n = 145), NPV for gross motor and fine motor were 96.4% (accuracy 80.0%) and 95.4% (accuracy 77.2%) respectively. At 12 months (n = 127), NPV for gross motor and fine motor were 88.9% (accuracy 79.8%) and 82.8% (accuracy 74.0%) respectively. At 18 months (n = 113), NPV for language was 56.9% (accuracy 63.7%).

The ASQ-3 showed high NPV and accuracy in screening gross motor and fine motor skills at 6 and 12 months, but not in screening language skills at 18 months. Judicious use of the ASQ-3 may allow for more effective utilization of resources.

This is a retrospective longitudinal observational study. Medical records from 100 CKD patients under conservative treatment, between 2016 and 2017, in a nephrology clinic, were analyzed. PAIR was applied by pharmacists in two consultations of the same patient, with an interval of 6 months. Reliability, conceptual validity, responsiveness of the instrument and prevalence of DRPs in the studied sample were assessed. A mean of 1.26 ± 0.96 DRPs/patient was identified. Inter-rater reliability coefficients (k) ranged from 0.58 to 0.94 and from 0.79 to 1.00 for test-retest, revealing moderate to perfect level of agreement. In conceptual validity, a mean of 1.60 ± 1.24 DRPs/patient was identified by the nephrologist through clinical judgment, compared to 1.33±0.76 DRPs/patient identified by the pharmacist using PAIR (p = 0.07). Therefore PAIR allowed the identification of clinically significant DRPs. In responsiveness, a mean of 1.26 ± 0.96 DRPs/patient was identified at the first consultation and 1.11 ± 1.02 DRPs/patient at the subsequent consultation (p = 0.17) by the pharmacist using PAIR. The number of DRPs between the periods did not change. As a conclusion, the PAIR allowed the identification of clinically significant DRPs in CKD, constituting a new validated instrument to be used in Brazil.Recent epidemiological studies have shown that dietary patterns may have a more persistent impact on the risk of stone formation than single nutrients of the diet. Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH), a low-sodium and fruits/vegetables-rich diet, has been associated with a lower risk of nephrolithiasis, due to altered urinary biochemistry. This observational study aimed to investigate whether the dietary pattern of stone formers (SF) resembled a DASH-diet and its influence on urinary lithogenic parameters. Anthropometric data, fasting serum sample, 24-h urine samples, and a 3-day food intake record under an unrestricted diet were obtained from 222 SF and compared with 136 non-SF subjects (controls). The DASH-diet food portions were determined from the food records whereas intakes of sodium chloride (NaCl) and protein (protein equivalent of nitrogen appearance, PNA) were estimated from 24-hr urinary sodium and urea. A dietary profile close to a DASH-diet was not observed in any of the groups. NaCl intake and PNA were significantly higher in SF versus non-SF (12.0 ± 5.2 v.s. 10.1 ± 3.4 g/day, p = 0.01 and 1.8 ± 0.1 v.s. 1.4 ± 0.1 g/kg/day, p = 0.03). SF exhibited a positive correlation of NaCl intake and PNA with urinary calcium, oxalate and uric acid, and of PNA with urinary sodium. SF consumed more vegetables and legumes, but less fruits and low-fat dairy items than non-SF. The present series presented a dietary profile characterized by low calcium and high salt and protein contents, not reflecting an ideal DASH-style diet pattern.Thionated perylenediimides (PDIs) can potentially generate thermal and reactive oxygen species and thus can be used as theranostic agents for photothermal/photodynamic therapy. Herein, thionated cis-/trans-isomer PDI-CS and PDI-TS were designed and prepared to investigate thionation engineering on therapeutic performance. The results revealed that the photodynamic performance is less associated with the positon of sulfur atoms. By contrast, trans-isomer PDI-TS showed a photothermal conversion efficiency of up to 58.4%, which was 40% higher than that of PDI-CS (∼41.6%). An in vitro half-maximal inhibitory concentration of ∼7.78 μg mL-1 was achieved for PDI-TS, which was 1.7-fold smaller than that of PDI-CS, strongly reasserting the regioisomer-modulated phototheranostic performance. Notably, the strong π-π and CS interactions in PDI-TS nanoagents are essential factors attributed to their excellent photothermal performance, indicating that the optimization of non-bonding interactions is an ingenious way to improve phototheranostic performance. This work provides a facile means of creating thio-perylenediimides that possess excellent antitumor properties and a novel proof of concept to improve therapeutic performance through the optimization of non-bonding interactions.Here, a scalable floating catalyst chemical vapor deposition (FCCVD) method is developed for the production of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with a controlled structure. For the first time, water is used as the growth promoter in the FCCVD process to modulate the growth of SWCNTs. At an optimum water concentration of ca. 115 ppm, the water-assisted FCCVD process synthesizes SWCNTs with a significantly narrow chirality distribution. In particular, the proportion of (9,8) and (8,7) semiconducting tubes was dramatically enhanced to 45% with 27% of the (9,8) tube in the end product. This is attributed to the changes in both the SWCNT diameter and the chiral angle. The experiment results and accurate quantum chemical molecular dynamics simulations show that the addition of water affects the nucleation and the size distribution of nanoparticle catalysts, thus resulting in the growth of SWCNTs with a highly uniform structure. This direct and continuous water-assisted FCCVD provides the possibility for the mass production of high-quality SWCNTs with a controlled structure.

To perform a scoping review of the evidence for therapeutic interventions to manage functional impairments associated with Rett syndrome (RTT) throughout the lifespan.

MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, CENTRAL, CINAHL, Scopus and Index to Chiropractic Literature were searched systematically up to December 2019. Two investigators independently reviewed all search results and extracted those that met the inclusion criteria. Human and animal model studies pertaining to therapies that increase functional ability or treat RTT-associated symptoms in all age groups were included. Relevant studies were grouped into intervention categories and rated using the Oxford Centre of Evidence Based Medicine Levels of Evidence. Demographics of participants, interventions, and outcomes were summarized.

Ninety-one articles representing 88 studies met the inclusion criteria, of which 80 were human clinical studies and eight were studies using animal models. Study designs were primarily case series and only six studies involved participants above the age of 40.

Brazil is a large country with an elevated incidence of Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) during pregnancy and variable access to health care. The objective of the study was to identify ophthalmia neonatorum prophylaxis practices in the country.

A prospective multidisciplinary survey was conducted using a closed social media group. Fifteen questions were developed after literature review. Specific content included categorization of respondents and practices such as type of medication, age at administration, occurrence of clinical and/or chemical conjunctivitis and microbiology identification. Questions were multiple choice, but some allowed written response.

A total of 1.015 professionals responded, representing 24 states (92%) and 181 cities; mainly neonatologists (64%) and general pediatricians (21%). 96% of respondents reported performing prophylaxis at their institutions, mostly at birth or <1 h of life (99%), and regardless the mode of delivery (73%). Frequently used medications are 1% silver nitrate (64%), 2.5% povidone iodine (18%) or 10% silver vitelinate (12%), with some regional variations. Occurrence of chemical conjunctivitis was stated by 58% of the respondents and microbiology identification was unusual.

Parent-completed tools like the Ages and Stages Questionnaire Third Edition (ASQ-3) are important in developmental screening. As a screening tool, a high negative predictive value (NPV) is critical to avoid missing the diagnosis of developmental delay. This study evaluated the NPV and accuracy of the ASQ-3 in assessing the development of preterm infants.

Infants born at <32 weeks and/or <1250 grams, presented to the Neonatal Neurodevelopmental Clinic at the Singapore General Hospital for follow-up from January 2014 -June 2017, at 6, 12, and 18 months corrected age, were included. The ASQ-3 and standardized tests -Peabody Developmental Motor Scale -Second Edition (PDMS-2) and Preschool Language Scale, Fourth Edition UK (PLS-4 UK) -were administered. ASQ-3 gross motor and fine motor scores were compared to PDMS-2 at 6 and 12 months, and ASQ-3 communication scores to PLS-4 UK at 18 months.

At 6 months (n = 145), NPV for gross motor and fine motor were 96.4% (accuracy 80.0%) and 95.4% (accuracy 77.2%) respectively. At 12 months (n = 127), NPV for gross motor and fine motor were 88.9% (accuracy 79.8%) and 82.8% (accuracy 74.0%) respectively. At 18 months (n = 113), NPV for language was 56.9% (accuracy 63.7%).

The ASQ-3 showed high NPV and accuracy in screening gross motor and fine motor skills at 6 and 12 months, but not in screening language skills at 18 months. Judicious use of the ASQ-3 may allow for more effective utilization of resources.

Therefore, the objective of this work was to validate the PAIR instrument (Pharmacotherapy Assessment in Chronic Renal Disease) for use in Brazilian Portuguese. This is a retrospective longitudinal observational study. Medical records from 100 CKD patients under conservative treatment, between 2016 and 2017, in a nephrology clinic, were analyzed. PAIR was applied by pharmacists in two consultations of the same patient, with an interval of 6 months. Reliability, conceptual validity, responsiveness of the instrument and prevalence of DRPs in the studied sample were assessed. A mean of 1.26 ± 0.96 DRPs/patient was identified. Inter-rater reliability coefficients (k) ranged from 0.58 to 0.94 and from 0.79 to 1.00 for test-retest, revealing moderate to perfect level of agreement. In conceptual validity, a mean of 1.60 ± 1.24 DRPs/patient was identified by the nephrologist through clinical judgment, compared to 1.33±0.76 DRPs/patient identified by the pharmacist using PAIR (p = 0.07). Therefore PAIR allowed the identification of clinically significant DRPs. In responsiveness, a mean of 1.26 ± 0.96 DRPs/patient was identified at the first consultation and 1.11 ± 1.02 DRPs/patient at the subsequent consultation (p = 0.17) by the pharmacist using PAIR. The number of DRPs between the periods did not change. Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH), a low-sodium and fruits/vegetables-rich diet, has been associated with a lower risk of nephrolithiasis, due to altered urinary biochemistry. This observational study aimed to investigate whether the dietary pattern of stone formers (SF) resembled a DASH-diet and its influence on urinary lithogenic parameters. Anthropometric data, fasting serum sample, 24-h urine samples, and a 3-day food intake record under an unrestricted diet were obtained from 222 SF and compared with 136 non-SF subjects (controls). The DASH-diet food portions were determined from the food records whereas intakes of sodium chloride (NaCl) and protein (protein equivalent of nitrogen appearance, PNA) were estimated from 24-hr urinary sodium and urea. A dietary profile close to a DASH-diet was not observed in any of the groups. NaCl intake and PNA were significantly higher in SF versus non-SF (12.0 ± 5.2 v.s. 10.1 ± 3.4 g/day, p = 0.01 and 1.8 ± 0.1 v.s. 1.4 ± 0.1 g/kg/day, p = 0.03). SF exhibited a positive correlation of NaCl intake and PNA with urinary calcium, oxalate and uric acid, and of PNA with urinary sodium. SF consumed more vegetables and legumes, but less fruits and low-fat dairy items than non-SF. Herein, thionated cis-/trans-isomer PDI-CS and PDI-TS were designed and prepared to investigate thionation engineering on therapeutic performance. The results revealed that the photodynamic performance is less associated with the positon of sulfur atoms. By contrast, trans-isomer PDI-TS showed a photothermal conversion efficiency of up to 58.4%, which was 40% higher than that of PDI-CS (∼41.6%). An in vitro half-maximal inhibitory concentration of ∼7.78 μg mL-1 was achieved for PDI-TS, which was 1.7-fold smaller than that of PDI-CS, strongly reasserting the regioisomer-modulated phototheranostic performance. Notably, the strong π-π and CS interactions in PDI-TS nanoagents are essential factors attributed to their excellent photothermal performance, indicating that the optimization of non-bonding interactions is an ingenious way to improve phototheranostic performance. For the first time, water is used as the growth promoter in the FCCVD process to modulate the growth of SWCNTs. At an optimum water concentration of ca. 115 ppm, the water-assisted FCCVD process synthesizes SWCNTs with a significantly narrow chirality distribution. In particular, the proportion of (9,8) and (8,7) semiconducting tubes was dramatically enhanced to 45% with 27% of the (9,8) tube in the end product. This is attributed to the changes in both the SWCNT diameter and the chiral angle. The experiment results and accurate quantum chemical molecular dynamics simulations show that the addition of water affects the nucleation and the size distribution of nanoparticle catalysts, thus resulting in the growth of SWCNTs with a highly uniform structure. This direct and continuous water-assisted FCCVD provides the possibility for the mass production of high-quality SWCNTs with a controlled structure.

Following this direction, using a designed scaffold based on the combination of two separate pharmacophoric groups, a series of menadione-derived selenoesters was developed with good yields. All products were evaluated for their in vitro activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv and attractive results were observed, especially for the compounds 8a, 8c and 8f (MICs 2.1, 8.0 and 8.1 μM, respectively). In addition, 8a, 8c and 8f demonstrated potent in vitro activity against multidrug-resistant clinical isolates (CDCT-16 and CDCT-27) with promising MIC values ranging from 0.8 to 3.1 μM. Importantly, compounds 8a and 8c were found to be non-toxic against the Vero cell line. The SI value of 8a (>23.8) was found to be comparable to that of isoniazid (>22.7), which suggests the possibility of carrying out advanced studies on this derivative. Among the examined animals of the four farms, the overall prevalence total of A. marginale was 55.7 % for gene msp5 and 36.7 % for blood smear. Thirty DNA samples (from 24 asymptomatic and six symptomatic animals) positive for A. marginale msp1α were sequenced to study genotype and strain diversity. The majority (28/30) were the E genotype, followed by C (1/30) and G (1/30). Thirteen different strains were found α-β-F-F-F (nine animals), 13-27-27 (three animals), τ-27-18 (three animals), α-β-β- BRA1-31 (three animals), α- 22-1318 (three animals), 80-F-F- F-F (three animals), and α -22-13-13, α-β-β-Г, M-φ-φ-φ-φ-F, 42-25- 25-31, Q-Q-Q-M, B-Q-B-Q-B-M, and 16-17-F-F (one animal each). A new structure repeated in tandem was described and named BRA 1 (TDSSSASGVLSQSGQASTSSQLG). The α-β-F-F-F strain was present in all animals with acute anaplasmosis and in three animals asymptomatic. In addition, the common habitat of wild boar and of the tick, Ixodes ricinus, indicates the potential of wild boar to play a role in epidemiology of epizootic and zoonotic tick-borne pathogens, including Anaplasma phagocytophilum. In Europe, epidemiological cycles and reservoirs of A. phagocytophilum, including its zoonotic haplotypes, are poorly understood. In this study, we focused on detection and further genetic characterization of A. phagocytophilum and piroplasmids in 550 wild boars from eleven districts of Moravia and Silesia in the Czech Republic. Using highly sensitive nested PCR targeting the groEL gene, the DNA of A. phagocytophilum was detected in 28 wild boars (5.1 %) representing six unique haplotypes. The dominant haplotype was found in 21 samples from 7 different districts. All detected haplotypes clustered in the largest clade representing the European ecotype I and the dominant haplotype fell to the subclade with the European human cases and strains from dogs and horses.

Bovine cysticercosis remains as one of the most important cause of carcasses and viscera condemnation in Brazilian slaughterhouses. However, the efficiency of post-mortem inspection for the diagnosis of this zoonotic disease is relatively low, and few available studies were performed through serological exams. This study evaluated the frequency of bovine cysticercosis in cattle herds located in different farms of the state of Rondônia, Brazil. Among the 987 animals slaughtered from 33 farms, 21 animals (Frequency 2.13%; 95C.I. 1.23-3.03) were considered as positive through indirect ELISA and confirmed by Immunoblot tests and the cysticercosis was detected in 12 farms (36.36% - C.I. 95% 19.95-52.78). The disease was detected in the municipalities Vale do Paraíso (12.50%), Theobroma (8.11%), Guaporé (7.27%), Rolim de Moura (5.71%), Presidente Médici (5.0%), Ouro Preto do Oeste (4.69%), Nova União (1.77%), Nova Brasilândia d'Oeste (1.14%) and Ministro Andreazza (1.01%). Therefore, prophylactic measures should be taken to improve beef production, control bovine cysticercosis and reduce costs to public health in this Brazilian state.Background Interdisciplinary research among health care professionals has gained importance over the last 20 years, but little is known about its impact on career development. Purpose This study examined professional development outcomes associated with interdisciplinary research. Methods An integrative review was conducted using Whittmore and Knafl's framework. PubMed, Embase, PsycInfo, Web of Science, and CINAHL were searched to identify studies. Findings Thirteen studies were included. The majority used bibliometric analyses, finding that moderate level of interdisciplinary collaboration was associated with a greater amount and higher quality of publications. Interdisciplinary publications allocated more credit (i.e., had more authors). Interdisciplinary research proposals had less funding success than single discipline proposals. Important cultural and personal aspects of interdisciplinary research (e.g., work and communication styles, research goals) have not been assessed to date. Hence, this study demonstrated the role of SET7/9 in mediating active transcription via H3K4Me2, ultimately regulated the NFκB-mediated inflammatory cascade. Glycycoumarin (GCM) is a major coumarin compound isolated from licorice with favorable bioavailability property. Our previous studies have shown that GCM is capable of inhibiting lipoapoptosis in both cell culture and methionine-choline-defcient (MCD) diet-induced mouse model of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) through mechanisms involving suppression of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. Perilipin 5 (PLIN5), a newly identified lipid drop protein in the perilipin family, is highly expressed in oxidative tissues including the liver and is suggested to play an important role in protecting against hepatic lipotoxicity. Give the hepatoprotective role of PLIN5, we hypothesized that induction of PLIN5 might contribute to the hepatoprotective effect of GCM via mitigating ER stress and inflammatory responses. Results showed that PLIN5 and its downstream target Sirt1 were induced by GCM both in vitro and in vivo. Inhibition of either PLIN5 or Sirt1 led to significantly attenuated protective effect of GCM on palmitic acid (PA)-induced lipoapoptosis and inflammatory responses, supporting involvement of PLIN5-Sirt1 axis in the protective effect of GCM on hepatic lipotoxicity. Among the lipid metabolic sensors, simulated microgravity treatment could increase the expressions of sbp-1 and mdt-15. RNAi knockdown of sbp-1 or mdt-15 induced a susceptibility to toxicity of simulated microgravity, suggesting the alteration in SBP-1 and MDT-1 mediated a protective response to simulated microgravity. Tissue-specific activity analysis demonstrated that both MDT-15 and SBP-1 could act in the intestine to regulate the response to simulated microgravity. Genetic interaction analysis further indicated that intestinal MDT-15 acted upstream of SBP-1 to regulate the response to simulated microgravity. During the control of response to simulated microgravity, fatty acyl CoA desaturase FAT-6 was identified as the downstream target of intestinal SBP-1.
