Loving Our Enemies

But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.

With the War Between The States spawning many bitter feelings, a Yankee politician saw fit to speak kindly about the South. A shocked bystander asked how he could do so. He replied, “Madam, do I not destroy my enemies when I make them my friends?” Reflecting on those words a century later, Martin Luther King Jr. commented, “This is the power of redemptive love.”

In calling disciples of Christ to love their enemies, King looked to the teachings of Jesus. He noted that although believers might struggle to love those who persecute them, this love grows out of “a consistent and total surrender to God.” “When we love in this way,” King continued, “we’ll know God and experience the beauty of His holiness.”

King referenced Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount in which He said, “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:44–45). Jesus counseled against the conventional wisdom of the day of loving only one’s neighbors and hating one’s enemies. Instead, God the Father gives His children the strength to love those who oppose them.

It may feel impossible to love our enemies, but as we look to God for help, He’ll answer our prayers. He gives the courage to embrace this radical practice, for as Jesus said, “with God all things are possible” (19:26).

This age in which we live could hardly be described as conducive to a sensitiveness of the needs of others. We have developed a veneer of sophistication and hardness. Someone once said, “I am sorry for the man who can’t feel the whip when it is laid on the other man’s back.” Much of the world is calloused and indifferent toward mankind’s poverty and distress. This is due largely to the fact that for many people there has never been a rebirth. The love of God has never been shed abroad in their hearts. Many people speak of the social gospel as though it were separate and apart from the redemptive Gospel. The truth is: there is only one Gospel. We must be redeemed, we must be made right with God before we can become sensitive to the needs of others. Divine love, like a reflected sunbeam, shines down before it radiates out. Unless our hearts are conditioned by the Holy Spirit to receive and reflect the warmth of God’s compassion, we cannot love our fellowmen as we ought.

Prayer for the day
Help me to feel another person's hurt and be concerned, Father, so that I may shed the light of Your love in an uncaring world. Amen.

I Am for all eternity, Nissi - Your Captain and the banner that marks you as belonging to Me. Like the children of Israel were led by a protective fire by night and a protective cloud by day, my Presence will be just as evident in your life as you follow me.

I Am for all eternity Raah - Your Shepherd and your Friend. I guide you daily through the good times and the difficult times. I love and care for you daily.

I Am for all eternity Raphe - Your healer…heart, mind, body. In the born-again transaction, you go from death to Life. Restoration to Me is your restoration to Life as I know Life.

I Am for all eternity Shalom - Peace. Heart peace that comes from my presence indwelling you continually. A peace that comes from a restored relationship with Me. Peace that is tangible for those who honor this truth, even in the strongest storms you pass through.

I Am for all eternity - Shammah - There with you always. This is also tangible for those who honor this truth. Close your physical eyes and see me with your spiritual eyes and understand Immanuel.

I Am for all eternity - Tsidkenu - Your righteousness my beloved one. I Am the prodigal Father who loved to extravagance breaking down all barriers, to bring you back into my arms the moment you were in Christ. Your prodigal sin did not stop my prodigal love from running to you to cover your sin and shame with My righteousness.

Here specifically the Lord #JesusChrist called to bring light to the masses who sit in darkness. Here the Lord is declaring new things, telling you before they are birthed that what he is doing is #redemptive here. #LighttotheGentiles
