To report a patient with history of recurrent Bell's Palsy who developed Bell's Palsy 36​h after the administration of the second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine.

The patient is a 57-year-old female with past medical history of 3 episodes of Bell's Palsy. She responded to prednisone treatment and returned to her baseline after each occurrence. Less than 36​h following the second dose of the vaccine, the patient developed a left Bell's Palsy. The facial droop progressed in severity over the next 72​h.

Given the expedited production of the vaccine and the novelty associated with its production, there may be information pertaining to side effects and individual response that remain to be discovered. Since both the Moderna and Pfizer Vaccine trials reported Bell's Palsy as medically attended adverse events, the association between vaccine administration and onset of symptomatic Bell's Palsy may warrant further investigation.

Objective To systematically analyze the basic characteristics and contents of the current health standards for infectious disease, environmental health, school health and disinfection in the context of COVID-19 prevention and control, and provide support for the further optimization of epidemic prevention and control guidelines and reference for the revision and improvement of related health standards. Methods Public health standards used in COVID-19 prevention and control were selected for a systematic comparison with "The Plan of COVID19 Prevention and Control" (the 6th Edition) and other epidemic prevention and control guidelines from the perspectives of application scope and technical elements. Results The current standards of public health are with scientificity, timeliness and feasibility. The application scope and technical elements of the current public health standards basically meet the needs of the prevention and control of COVID-19 epidemic, but the public health standardization system still needs improvement, and some public health standards need to be revised. Conclusions The implementation of current public health standards can provide strong technical support for the prevention and control of COVID-19 epidemic. The experience obtained from COVID-19 epidemic prevention and control might promote the further improvement of the health standardization system.Purpose Pediatric clerkships that utilize off-campus clinical sites ensure clinical comparability by requiring completion of patient-focused tasks. Some tasks may not be attainable (especially off-campus); thus, they are not assigned. The objective of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of providing a voluntary assignment list to pediatric clerkship third-year medical students. Methods This is a retrospective single-center cross-sectional analysis of voluntary assignment completion during the 2019-2020 academic year. Third-year medical students were provided a voluntary assignment list as follows observe a procedure, use an interpreter phone to obtain a pediatric history, ask a preceptor to critique a clinical note, and follow-up on a patient after rotation end. Descriptive statistics were used to assess the timing and distribution of voluntary assignment completion amongst study subjects. Results One-hundred and thirty-two subjects (77 on main-campus, 55 off-campus) were included in this study. Eighteen (13.6%) main-campus and sixteen (12.1%) off-campus students completed at least one voluntary assignment. The following voluntary assignments were completed observe a procedure (15, 11.4%), use an interpreter phone (26, 19.7%), ask a preceptor to critique a clinical note (12, 9.1%), and follow-up on a patient after rotation end (7, 5.3%). Off-campus students completed this assignment more often (29.1%) than on-campus students (23.4%). Conclusion Our clerkship values specific patient-focused tasks that may enhance student development, but are not attainable at all our clinical sites. It is demonstrated that when provided a voluntary assignment list, 34 out of 132students (25.8%) completed them. Clerkships that utilize off-campus sites should consider this approach to optimize the pediatric educational experience.Purpose Learning to perform and document patient history taking and physical exam (H&P) entails a major component of the 1st year academic education of physician assistant (PA) students at Wayne State University, USA. The H&P is summative of multiple aspects of PA education, and students must master communication with patients and other health care providers. The objectives of this study were first, to determine if there was a correlation between scores on GRE component testing and scores on graded H&Ps. The second objective was to identify a correlation between proficiency with H&P documentation and academic and clinical year grade point average (GPA)s and Physician Assistant National Qualifying (PANCE) score. Methods Subjects included 147 PA students from Wayne State University from 2014-2016. PA students visited local hospitals or outpatient clinics during the academic year to perform and document patient H&Ps. Correlation between The H&P mean scores and GRE component scores, GPAs, and PANCE scores were analyzed. Results The subjects were 26.5 years-old (+ 6.5) and 111 female (75.5%). There was no correlation between the GRE component score and the H&P mean score. The H&P score was positively correlated with GPA 1 (r = 0.512, P less then 0.001), with GPA 2 (r = 0.425, P less then 0.001) and with PANCE score (r = 0.448, P less then 0.001). Conclusion PA student skill with H&P documentation was positively related to academic performance score during PA school and achievement score on the PANCE at Wayne State University, USA.Background International normalized ratio (INR) is used as a marker of the haemostatic status following liver resection. However, the impact of liver resection on haemostasis is complex and beyond what can be measured by INR. This study aimed to prospectively assess haemostatic profile following liver resection and determine if INR measurement can safely guide post-operative thromboprophylaxis. Methods In this prospective cohort study, patients undergoing liver resection had coagulation parameters (International normalised ratio (INR), prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time, fibrinogen, d-dimer, von Willebrand factor antigen, procoagulant activity of phospholipids and clotting factors II, VII, VIIIc, IX and X) and thromboelastogram parameters assessed perioperatively. Clinical follow-up assessed for thromboembolism and haemorrhage. Results In the 41 patients included, INR was significantly (P 1.5 was observed in seven of 41 (17.1%) on post-operative day 1 and one of 41 (2.4%) patients on post-operative day 3, respectively. Factor VII levels showed transient reduction but other factors, especially factors II and X, remained within normal range following liver resection. Thromboelastogram parameters remained normal or supranormal for all patients at all time points. One incident of post-hepatectomy haemorrhage occurred, despite a normal coagulation profile. Two patients suffered late pulmonary embolic episodes. Conclusion Post liver resection haemostasis is complex and poorly reflected by INR, which should not guide initiation of chemical thromboprophylaxis in the immediate post-operative period.Background This study aimed to use validated coding algorithms, applied to a central repository of administrative data (AD), to report on short-term outcomes following resection for colorectal cancer (CRC) comparing regional to metropolitan Victorian hospitals. Methods This is a retrospective cohort study using prospectively gathered AD. The primary outcome was prolonged length of stay (LOS). Secondary outcomes were inpatient mortality, return to theatre, discharge destination and need for mechanical ventilation/intensive care unit support. Outcomes were adjusted for potential confounders via multivariable logistic regression analysis. Results This study of 18 470 patients found strong evidence for lower odds of prolonged LOS (odds ratio (OR) 0.53, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.48-0.58, P ≤ 0.001) and inpatient mortality (OR 0.67, 95% CI 0.49-0.91, P = 0.01) in inner regional hospital compared with metropolitan hospitals. For outer regional hospitals, there was strong evidence of decreased odds of prolonged LOS (OR 0.64, 95% CI 0.52-0.77, P = less then 0.001) and return to theatre (OR 0.67, 95% CI 0.47-0.95, P = 0.03). Conclusion This is the largest and most detailed study concerning short-term outcomes following CRC resection in Victorian public hospitals. Inner and outer regional centres had similar or better short-term outcomes than metropolitan hospitals after CRC resection. Methods We used a genetic mouse model of NS based on an inducible podocin knockout (Bl6-Nphs2tm3.1Antc *Tg(Nphs1-rtTA*3G)8Jhm *Tg(tetO-cre)1Jaw or nphs2Δipod ). These mice were crossed with plasminogen deficient mice (Bl6-Plgtm1Jld or plg-/- ) to generate double knockout mice (nphs2Δipod *plg-/- ). NS was induced after oral doxycycline treatment for 14 days and mice were followed for subsequent 14 days. Results Uninduced nphs2Δipod *plg-/- mice had normal kidney function and sodium handling. After induction, proteinuria increased similarly in both nphs2Δipod *plg+/+ and nphs2Δipod *plg-/- mice. Western blot revealed the urinary excretion of plasminogen and plasmin in nphs2Δipod *plg+/+ mice which were absent in nphs2Δipod *plg-/- mice. After the onset of proteinuria, amiloride-sensitive natriuresis was increased compared to the uninduced state in both genotypes. Subsequently, urinary sodium excretion dropped in both genotypes leading to an increase in body weight and development of ascites. Treatment with the serine protease inhibitor aprotinin prevented sodium retention in both genotypes. Conclusions This study shows that mice lacking urinary plasminogen are not protected from ENaC-mediated sodium retention in experimental NS. In this paper a new concept of a controllable granular damper is presented. The introduced prototype works based on so-called vacuum packed particles (VPPs). Such structures are made of granular materials located in a soft and hermetic encapsulation. As a result of generating a partial vacuum inside the system, the structure starts to behave like a nonclassical solid body. The global physical (mechanical) features of VPPs depend on the level of internal underpressure. The introduced prototype of a controllable torsional damper exhibits various dissipative properties as a function of internal underpressure. The design details of the investigated device are presented. Basic laboratory tests results are discussed. To describe the hysteretic behavior of the device, the Bouc-Wen rheological model has been modified and adopted. Nonlinear functions of underpressure have been introduced to the initial model formulation. The developed Bouc-Wen model has been applied to capture the real response of the VPP torsional damper prototype.This exploratory study aimed to monitor long-term seasonal developments in measures of anthropometry, body composition, and physical fitness in young judo athletes, and to compute associations between these measures and sporting success. Forty-four young judoka (20 females, 24 males) volunteered to participate. Tests for the assessment of anthropometry (e.g., body height/mass), body-composition (e.g., lean body mass), muscle strength (isometric handgrip strength), vertical jumping (e.g., countermovement-jump (CMJ) height), and dynamic balance (Y-balance test) were conducted at the beginning and end of a 10-month training season. Additionally, sporting success at the end of the season was recorded for each athlete. Analyses revealed significant time × sex interaction effects for lean-body-mass, isometric handgrip strength, and CMJ height (0.7 ≤ d ≤ 1.6). Post-hoc analyses showed larger gains for all measures in young males (1.9 ≤ d ≤6.0) compared with females (d = 2.4) across the season. Additionally, significant increases in body height and mass as well as Y-balance test scores were found from pre-to-post-test (1.2 ≤ d ≤4.3), irrespective of sex. Further, non-significant small-to-moderate-sized correlations were identified between changes in anthropometry/body composition/physical fitness and sporting success (p > 0.05; -0.34 ≤ ρ ≤ 0.32). Regression analysis confirmed that no model significantly predicted sporting success. Ten months of judo training and/or growth/maturation contributed to significant changes in anthropometry, body composition, and physical fitness, particularly in young male judo athletes.Nanoindentation on a platinum thin film with surface defects in a rectangular shape and triangular shape was simulated using the quasicontinuum method to study the shape effect of surface defects on nanohardness. The results show that the nanohardness of thin film with triangular defects is basically larger than those with rectangular defects, which is closely related to the height of the surface defects at the boundary near to the indenter. Moreover, the triangular defect might have an enhancement effect on nanohardness by a certain size of the defects and the boundary orientation of the defect, where such an enhancement effect increases as the defect grows. Furthermore, the nanohardness decreases when the defect is folded from wide to narrow in the same atom cavity, and particularly expresses a more obvious drop when the height of the defects increases. This study aimed to identify independent predictors of in-hospital mortality after accidental or intentional falls in different age groups. We conducted a retrospective study of all patients consecutively admitted after a fall in eight years, recording mechanism, intentionality, height of fall, age, site, classification of injuries, and outcome. We built multivariate regression models to identify independent predictors of mortality. A total of 948 patients with 82 deaths were observed. A similar set-up can additionally be realized for the generation of two-photon NOON states, also with pump self-rejection. We discuss the implementation of the scheme by means of the coherent diffusive photonics, and demostrate its feasibility in both glass (such as fused silica-glass and IG2) and planar semiconductor waveguide structures in indium phosphide (InP) and in silicon.With the rapid increase of the elderly population in China, healthcare services for the elderly have gradually become an important welfare resource. However, the healthcare service for the elderly still has problems such as mismatched supply and demand and unbalanced resources. In order to effectively eliminate the path barriers to match supply and demand, and improve the accessibility of healthcare services, this paper introduces the sustainability of the healthcare service based on the accessibility theory, and constructs an index system from the three dimensions of potential accessibility, realized accessibility, and sustainable accessibility of healthcare services for the elderly. Then, the paper makes a practice application of the index system based on survey data of healthcare services from Shaanxi province, China. Finally, the paper finds that the total accessibility and sustainable accessibility of healthcare services for the elderly in Shaanxi Province are at an average level. The score of potential accessibility is high, indicating that elderly people have greater opportunities to use healthcare services. The realized accessibility score is low, which indicates that the actual use of healthcare services for the elderly presents low satisfaction.The SARS-CoV2 pandemic has impacted risk management globally. Blockchain has been increasingly applied to healthcare management, as a strategic tool to strengthen operative protocols and to create the proper basis for an efficient and effective evidence-based decisional process. We aim to validate blockchain in healthcare, and to suggest a trace-route for a COVID19-safe clinical practice. The use of blockchain in combination with artificial intelligence systems allows the creation of a generalizable predictive system that could contribute to the containment of pandemic risk on national territory. A SWOT analysis of the adoption of a blockchain-based prediction model in healthcare and SARS-CoV-2 infection has been carried out to underline opportunities and limits to its adoption. Blockchain could play a strategic role in future digital healthcare specifically, it may work to improve COVID19-safe clinical practice. The main concepts, and particularly those related to clinical workflow, obtainable from different blockchain-based models have been reported here and critically discussed.Leukemia is a common and lethal disease. In recent years, iron-based nanomedicines have been developed as a new ferroptosis inducer to leukemia. However, the cytotoxicity of iron nanoparticles to leukemia cells at the transcriptomic level remains unclear. This study investigated the effects of two kinds of iron nanoparticles, 2,3-Dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA)-coated Fe3O4 nanoparticles (FeNPs) as a reactive oxygen species (ROS) inducer and Prussian blue nanoparticles (PBNPs) as an ROS scavenger, on the transcriptomic profiles of two leukemia cells (KG1a and HL60) by RNA-Seq. As a result, 470 and 1690 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified in the FeNP-treated HL60 and KG1a cells, respectively, and 2008 and 2504 DEGs were found in the PBNP-treated HL60 and KG1a cells, respectively. Among them, 14 common upregulated and 4 common downregulated DEGs were found, these genes were representative genes that play key roles in lipid metabolism (GBA and ABCA1), iron metabolism (FTL, DNM1, and TRFC), antioxidation (NQO1, GCLM, and SLC7A11), vesicle traffic (MCTP2, DNM1, STX3, and BIN2), and innate immune response (TLR6, ADGRG3, and DDX24). The gene ontology revealed that the mineral absorption pathway was significantly regulated by PBNPs in two cells, whereas the lipid metabolism and HIF-1 signaling pathways were significantly regulated by FeNPs in two cells. This study established the gene signatures of two kinds of nanoparticles in two leukemia cells, which revealed the main biological processes regulated by the two kinds of iron nanoparticles. These data shed new insights into the cytotoxicity of iron nanoparticles that differently regulate ROS in leukemia cells with variant stemness.Drastically elevated glycolytic activity is a prominent metabolic feature of cancer cells. Until recently it was thought that tumor cells shift their entire energy production from oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) to glycolysis. However, new evidence indicates that many cancer cells still have functional OXPHOS, despite their increased reliance on glycolysis. Growing pre-clinical and clinical evidence suggests that targeting mitochondrial metabolism has anti-cancer effects. Here, we analyzed mitochondrial respiration and the amount and activity of OXPHOS complexes in four melanoma cell lines and normal human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs) by Seahorse real-time cell metabolic analysis, immunoblotting, and spectrophotometry. We also tested three clinically approved antibiotics, one anti-parasitic drug (pyrvinium pamoate), and a novel anti-cancer agent (ONC212) for effects on mitochondrial respiration and proliferation of melanoma cells and HDFs. We found that three of the four melanoma cell lines have elevated glycolysis as well as OXPHOS, but contain dysfunctional mitochondria.

To report a patient with history of recurrent Bell's Palsy who developed Bell's Palsy 36​h after the administration of the second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine.

The patient is a 57-year-old female with past medical history of 3 episodes of Bell's Palsy. She responded to prednisone treatment and returned to her baseline after each occurrence. Less than 36​h following the second dose of the vaccine, the patient developed a left Bell's Palsy. The facial droop progressed in severity over the next 72​h.

Given the expedited production of the vaccine and the novelty associated with its production, there may be information pertaining to side effects and individual response that remain to be discovered. Since both the Moderna and Pfizer Vaccine trials reported Bell's Palsy as medically attended adverse events, the association between vaccine administration and onset of symptomatic Bell's Palsy may warrant further investigation.

Objective To systematically analyze the basic characteristics and contents of the current health standards for infectious disease, environmental health, school health and disinfection in the context of COVID-19 prevention and control, and provide support for the further optimization of epidemic prevention and control guidelines and reference for the revision and improvement of related health standards. Methods Public health standards used in COVID-19 prevention and control were selected for a systematic comparison with "The Plan of COVID19 Prevention and Control" (the 6th Edition) and other epidemic prevention and control guidelines from the perspectives of application scope and technical elements. Results The current standards of public health are with scientificity, timeliness and feasibility. The application scope and technical elements of the current public health standards basically meet the needs of the prevention and control of COVID-19 epidemic, but the public health standardization system still needs improvement, and some public health standards need to be revised. Conclusions The implementation of current public health standards can provide strong technical support for the prevention and control of COVID-19 epidemic. The experience obtained from COVID-19 epidemic prevention and control might promote the further improvement of the health standardization system.Purpose Pediatric clerkships that utilize off-campus clinical sites ensure clinical comparability by requiring completion of patient-focused tasks. Some tasks may not be attainable (especially off-campus); thus, they are not assigned. The objective of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of providing a voluntary assignment list to pediatric clerkship third-year medical students. Methods This is a retrospective single-center cross-sectional analysis of voluntary assignment completion during the 2019-2020 academic year. Third-year medical students were provided a voluntary assignment list as follows observe a procedure, use an interpreter phone to obtain a pediatric history, ask a preceptor to critique a clinical note, and follow-up on a patient after rotation end. Descriptive statistics were used to assess the timing and distribution of voluntary assignment completion amongst study subjects. Results One-hundred and thirty-two subjects (77 on main-campus, 55 off-campus) were included in this study. Eighteen (13.6%) main-campus and sixteen (12.1%) off-campus students completed at least one voluntary assignment. The following voluntary assignments were completed observe a procedure (15, 11.4%), use an interpreter phone (26, 19.7%), ask a preceptor to critique a clinical note (12, 9.1%), and follow-up on a patient after rotation end (7, 5.3%). Off-campus students completed this assignment more often (29.1%) than on-campus students (23.4%). Conclusion Our clerkship values specific patient-focused tasks that may enhance student development, but are not attainable at all our clinical sites. It is demonstrated that when provided a voluntary assignment list, 34 out of 132students (25.8%) completed them. Clerkships that utilize off-campus sites should consider this approach to optimize the pediatric educational experience.Purpose Learning to perform and document patient history taking and physical exam (H&P) entails a major component of the 1st year academic education of physician assistant (PA) students at Wayne State University, USA. The H&P is summative of multiple aspects of PA education, and students must master communication with patients and other health care providers. The objectives of this study were first, to determine if there was a correlation between scores on GRE component testing and scores on graded H&Ps. The second objective was to identify a correlation between proficiency with H&P documentation and academic and clinical year grade point average (GPA)s and Physician Assistant National Qualifying (PANCE) score. Methods Subjects included 147 PA students from Wayne State University from 2014-2016. PA students visited local hospitals or outpatient clinics during the academic year to perform and document patient H&Ps. Correlation between The H&P mean scores and GRE component scores, GPAs, and PANCE scores were analyzed. Results The subjects were 26.5 years-old (+ 6.5) and 111 female (75.5%). There was no correlation between the GRE component score and the H&P mean score. The H&P score was positively correlated with GPA 1 (r = 0.512, P less then 0.001), with GPA 2 (r = 0.425, P less then 0.001) and with PANCE score (r = 0.448, P less then 0.001). Conclusion PA student skill with H&P documentation was positively related to academic performance score during PA school and achievement score on the PANCE at Wayne State University, USA.Background International normalized ratio (INR) is used as a marker of the haemostatic status following liver resection. However, the impact of liver resection on haemostasis is complex and beyond what can be measured by INR. This study aimed to prospectively assess haemostatic profile following liver resection and determine if INR measurement can safely guide post-operative thromboprophylaxis. Methods In this prospective cohort study, patients undergoing liver resection had coagulation parameters (International normalised ratio (INR), prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time, fibrinogen, d-dimer, von Willebrand factor antigen, procoagulant activity of phospholipids and clotting factors II, VII, VIIIc, IX and X) and thromboelastogram parameters assessed perioperatively. Clinical follow-up assessed for thromboembolism and haemorrhage. Results In the 41 patients included, INR was significantly (P 1.5 was observed in seven of 41 (17.1%) on post-operative day 1 and one of 41 (2.4%) patients on post-operative day 3, respectively. Factor VII levels showed transient reduction but other factors, especially factors II and X, remained within normal range following liver resection. Thromboelastogram parameters remained normal or supranormal for all patients at all time points. One incident of post-hepatectomy haemorrhage occurred, despite a normal coagulation profile. Two patients suffered late pulmonary embolic episodes. Conclusion Post liver resection haemostasis is complex and poorly reflected by INR, which should not guide initiation of chemical thromboprophylaxis in the immediate post-operative period.Background This study aimed to use validated coding algorithms, applied to a central repository of administrative data (AD), to report on short-term outcomes following resection for colorectal cancer (CRC) comparing regional to metropolitan Victorian hospitals. Methods This is a retrospective cohort study using prospectively gathered AD. The primary outcome was prolonged length of stay (LOS). Secondary outcomes were inpatient mortality, return to theatre, discharge destination and need for mechanical ventilation/intensive care unit support. Outcomes were adjusted for potential confounders via multivariable logistic regression analysis. Results This study of 18 470 patients found strong evidence for lower odds of prolonged LOS (odds ratio (OR) 0.53, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.48-0.58, P ≤ 0.001) and inpatient mortality (OR 0.67, 95% CI 0.49-0.91, P = 0.01) in inner regional hospital compared with metropolitan hospitals. For outer regional hospitals, there was strong evidence of decreased odds of prolonged LOS (OR 0.64, 95% CI 0.52-0.77, P = less then 0.001) and return to theatre (OR 0.67, 95% CI 0.47-0.95, P = 0.03). Conclusion This is the largest and most detailed study concerning short-term outcomes following CRC resection in Victorian public hospitals. Inner and outer regional centres had similar or better short-term outcomes than metropolitan hospitals after CRC resection. Methods We used a genetic mouse model of NS based on an inducible podocin knockout (Bl6-Nphs2tm3.1Antc *Tg(Nphs1-rtTA*3G)8Jhm *Tg(tetO-cre)1Jaw or nphs2Δipod ). These mice were crossed with plasminogen deficient mice (Bl6-Plgtm1Jld or plg-/- ) to generate double knockout mice (nphs2Δipod *plg-/- ). NS was induced after oral doxycycline treatment for 14 days and mice were followed for subsequent 14 days. Results Uninduced nphs2Δipod *plg-/- mice had normal kidney function and sodium handling. After induction, proteinuria increased similarly in both nphs2Δipod *plg+/+ and nphs2Δipod *plg-/- mice. Western blot revealed the urinary excretion of plasminogen and plasmin in nphs2Δipod *plg+/+ mice which were absent in nphs2Δipod *plg-/- mice. After the onset of proteinuria, amiloride-sensitive natriuresis was increased compared to the uninduced state in both genotypes. Subsequently, urinary sodium excretion dropped in both genotypes leading to an increase in body weight and development of ascites. Treatment with the serine protease inhibitor aprotinin prevented sodium retention in both genotypes. Conclusions This study shows that mice lacking urinary plasminogen are not protected from ENaC-mediated sodium retention in experimental NS. In this paper a new concept of a controllable granular damper is presented. The introduced prototype works based on so-called vacuum packed particles (VPPs). Such structures are made of granular materials located in a soft and hermetic encapsulation. As a result of generating a partial vacuum inside the system, the structure starts to behave like a nonclassical solid body. The global physical (mechanical) features of VPPs depend on the level of internal underpressure. The introduced prototype of a controllable torsional damper exhibits various dissipative properties as a function of internal underpressure. The design details of the investigated device are presented. Basic laboratory tests results are discussed. To describe the hysteretic behavior of the device, the Bouc-Wen rheological model has been modified and adopted. Nonlinear functions of underpressure have been introduced to the initial model formulation. The developed Bouc-Wen model has been applied to capture the real response of the VPP torsional damper prototype.This exploratory study aimed to monitor long-term seasonal developments in measures of anthropometry, body composition, and physical fitness in young judo athletes, and to compute associations between these measures and sporting success. Forty-four young judoka (20 females, 24 males) volunteered to participate. Tests for the assessment of anthropometry (e.g., body height/mass), body-composition (e.g., lean body mass), muscle strength (isometric handgrip strength), vertical jumping (e.g., countermovement-jump (CMJ) height), and dynamic balance (Y-balance test) were conducted at the beginning and end of a 10-month training season. Additionally, sporting success at the end of the season was recorded for each athlete. Analyses revealed significant time × sex interaction effects for lean-body-mass, isometric handgrip strength, and CMJ height (0.7 ≤ d ≤ 1.6). Post-hoc analyses showed larger gains for all measures in young males (1.9 ≤ d ≤6.0) compared with females (d = 2.4) across the season. Additionally, significant increases in body height and mass as well as Y-balance test scores were found from pre-to-post-test (1.2 ≤ d ≤4.3), irrespective of sex. Further, non-significant small-to-moderate-sized correlations were identified between changes in anthropometry/body composition/physical fitness and sporting success (p > 0.05; -0.34 ≤ ρ ≤ 0.32). Regression analysis confirmed that no model significantly predicted sporting success. Ten months of judo training and/or growth/maturation contributed to significant changes in anthropometry, body composition, and physical fitness, particularly in young male judo athletes.Nanoindentation on a platinum thin film with surface defects in a rectangular shape and triangular shape was simulated using the quasicontinuum method to study the shape effect of surface defects on nanohardness. However, the cytotoxicity of iron nanoparticles to leukemia cells at the transcriptomic level remains unclear. This study investigated the effects of two kinds of iron nanoparticles, 2,3-Dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA)-coated Fe3O4 nanoparticles (FeNPs) as a reactive oxygen species (ROS) inducer and Prussian blue nanoparticles (PBNPs) as an ROS scavenger, on the transcriptomic profiles of two leukemia cells (KG1a and HL60) by RNA-Seq. As a result, 470 and 1690 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified in the FeNP-treated HL60 and KG1a cells, respectively, and 2008 and 2504 DEGs were found in the PBNP-treated HL60 and KG1a cells, respectively. Among them, 14 common upregulated and 4 common downregulated DEGs were found, these genes were representative genes that play key roles in lipid metabolism (GBA and ABCA1), iron metabolism (FTL, DNM1, and TRFC), antioxidation (NQO1, GCLM, and SLC7A11), vesicle traffic (MCTP2, DNM1, STX3, and BIN2), and innate immune response (TLR6, ADGRG3, and DDX24). Here, we analyzed mitochondrial respiration and the amount and activity of OXPHOS complexes in four melanoma cell lines and normal human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs) by Seahorse real-time cell metabolic analysis, immunoblotting, and spectrophotometry. We also tested three clinically approved antibiotics, one anti-parasitic drug (pyrvinium pamoate), and a novel anti-cancer agent (ONC212) for effects on mitochondrial respiration and proliferation of melanoma cells and HDFs. Sclerotinia sclerotiorum is a pathogenic fungus that infects hundreds of plant species, including many of the world's most important crops. Key features of S. sclerotiorum include its extraordinary host range, preference for dicotyledonous plants, relatively slow evolution, and production of protein effectors that are active in multiple host species. Plant resistance to this pathogen is highly complex, typically involving numerous polymorphisms with infinitesimally small effects, which makes resistance breeding a major challenge. Due to its economic significance, S. sclerotiorum has been subjected to a large amount of molecular and evolutionary research. In this updated pathogen profile, we review the evolutionary and molecular features of S. sclerotiorum and discuss avenues for future research into this important species.
The aim of this study was to report visual outcome and safety after cataract surgery with primary intraocular lens implantation before 12 weeks of age.

Infants with visually significant unilateral congenital cataract having primary IOL implantation in the capsular bag before 12 weeks of age in 2007-2016 were enrolled for a prospective study examination in 2017. The medical records were also reviewed.

In total, 23 patients with a median age at cataract surgery of 32 days (range, 12-75 days) were included. Seventeen (74%) eyes had persistent foetal vasculature (PFV). After a median follow-up of 6.3 years (range, 1.4-10.9 years), the corrected distance visual acuity was 0.8 logMAR (range, 3.0-0.1 logMAR). All, except one eye, required surgery for visual axis opacification (VAO), with a median of two (range 0-5) additional surgical procedures. Four (17%) eyes developed secondary glaucoma.

Relying on nucleic acid amplification technology, the system can successfully realize the recycling of kanamycin, so that the biosensor can release a large number of luminol-functionalized gold nanoparticles with excellent CL performance even at a low residual levels of kanamycin. The biosensor strategy showed a good linear relationship with kanamycin in the range 0.09-130 nM, the detection limit was as low as 0.04 nM. In this study, we used a modeling and simulation approach to assess the potential impact of study outcomes when two different batches of a Reference Standard (RS) were to be used in an in vivo pharmacokinetic BE study due to the RS expiration during the COVID-19 pandemic. Simulations were performed with hypothetical drugs under two scenarios (1) uninterrupted study using a single batch of an RS, and (2) interrupted study using two batches of an RS. The acceptability of BE outcomes was evaluated by comparing the results obtained from interrupted studies with those from uninterrupted studies. The simulation results demonstrated that using a conventional statistical approach to evaluate BE for COVID-19-interrupted studies may be acceptable based on the pooled data from two batches. An alternative statistical method which includes a "batch" effect to the mixed effects model may be used when a significant "batch" effect was found in interrupted four-way crossover studies. Despite overwhelming evidence of benefit, medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) remain stigmatizing and more efforts are needed to educate health care professionals and the general public.

We developed and evaluated an educational program for graduate students studying health sciences, teaching them to deliver 1 h presentations to the community on the opioid crisis and the usefulness of MOUD.

To date, 120 graduate students have participated in this training experience on substance use disorders and delivered 59 presentations to more than 1065 community members. We found a significant increase in knowledge among students following the training. In addition, although attitudes and beliefs were generally positive at baseline, we also found significant increases in positives attitudes about the treatment of addiction and working with patients with addictions. Almost all students believed the course enhanced their professional expertise and would recommend it to others. We compared our students' baseline knowledge and attitudes to a large sample of other graduate students and did not find significant differences indicating good external validity of our results. Finally, we evaluated change in community members' knowledge and attitudes (N = 315) following student presentations and found significant increases in knowledge and positive attitude change toward MOUD.

Overall our program was feasible, enjoyable, and effective in meeting its goals of increasing knowledge acquisition and improving attitudes among students and the greater community.

Scopolamine (SCO) as a potent drug for inducing memory and learning impairment is associated with mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress. In AD clinical trials molecules with antioxidant properties have shown modest benefit. Betanin as a multifunctional molecule with powerful antioxidative properties may be effective in the treatment of neurodegenerative. Hence, this study was designed to investigate the possible therapeutic effect of betanin against SCO-induced AD on Wistar rats. SCO (1 mg/kg) was administrated intraperitoneally to induce the AD in Wistar rats. The rats were treated with betanin doses (25 mg/kg and 50 mg/kg) intraperitoneally for 9 consecutive days. At the end of the 9th day, the animals were subjected to behavioral examination such as novel object recognition and passive avoidance tests and killed to study the mitochondrial and histological parameters.

The postoperative pathological examination showed pT1bN0M0 gastric adenocarcinoma. The patient developed proctotomy leak on the 10th postoperative day. We analyzed the causes of this rare complication and put forward a series of technical improvements. After failure of conservative treatment, a diverting ileostomy was created and the patient eventually recovered. We successfully prevented proctotomy leak in the subsequent 20 transrectal NOSE gastrectomies using improved techniques.

Primary effusion lymphoma is a rare, aggressive large B-cell lymphoma strictly linked to infection by Human Herpes virus 8/Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpes virus. In its classic form, it is characterized by body cavities neoplastic effusions without detectable tumor masses. It often occurs in immunocompromised patients, such as HIV-positive individuals. Primary effusion lymphoma may affect HIV-negative elderly patients from Human Herpes virus 8 endemic regions. So far, rare cases have been reported in transplanted patients. The purpose of our systematic review is to improve our understanding of this type of aggressive lymphoma in the setting of transplantation, focusing on epidemiology, clinical presentation, pathological features, differential diagnosis, treatment and outcome. The role of assessing the viral serological status in donors and recipients is also discussed.

The prevalence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is increasing globally, and the disease is frequently managed surgically. The aim of this study was to investigate the time trends and geographic distribution of IBD hospitalizations, surgeries and surgical-associated lethality.

Data from the Brazilian Health Public System were retrospectively collected regarding hospitalizations, in-hospital deaths, IBD-related surgical procedures and lethality from 2005 to 2015.

This eleven-year period revealed decreases in the rates of hospitalization (24%), IBD-related surgeries (35%), and IBD-related surgical lethality (46%). Most surgeries were performed in Crohn's disease patients, and the predominant procedure was small bowel resection, mostly in young adults. A higher prevalence of ulcerative was observed throughout the country. The highest hospitalization and surgical rates were observed in the more industrialized regions of the South and the Southeast and in the municipalities integrated with metropolitan reged in the industrialized areas, but with a shift towards the Northeast and from urbanized to rural areas, indicates ongoing changes within the country. Reductions in the rates of IBD-related hospitalizations, surgeries and lethality suggest the effectiveness of decentralization and improvements in the quality of public health services and the advances in medical therapy during the study period.
The Covid-19 pandemic is characterized by uncertainty and constant change, forcing governments and health authorities to ramp up risk communication efforts. Consequently, visuality and social media platforms like Twitter have come to play a vital role in disseminating prevention messages widely. Yet to date, only little is known about what characterizes visual risk communication during the Covid-19 pandemic. To address this gap in the literature, this study's objective was to determine how visual risk communication was used on Twitter to promote the World Health Organisations (WHO) recommended preventative behaviours and how this communication changed over time.

We sourced Twitter's 500 most retweeted Covid-19 messages for each month from January-October 2020 using Crowdbreaks. For inclusion, tweets had to have visuals, be in English, come from verified accounts, and contain one of the keywords 'covid19', 'coronavirus', 'corona', or 'covid'. Following a retrospective approach, we then performed a qualitaton public perceptions and behaviours.
Variation of the vertebral artery bifurcation is rare. This branching abnormality can cause unexpected vertebral artery damage and bleeding during thoracoscopic esophagectomy. There are few reports of abnormal branching of the vertebral artery associated with neurosurgery but none related to esophagectomy. We report the case together with the results of the evaluation of vertebral artery bifurcation and length in 50 patients with esophageal cancer in our hospital.

Thoracoscopic esophagectomy was performed on a 70-year-old patient with esophageal cancer. During lymph node dissection around the right reccurent laryngeal nerve, an unusual blood vessel was found running along the right subclavian artery. We determined this blood vessel to be the right vertebral artery branching far more centrally than usual. Because this anatomical abnormality was clarified, we could then recognize that the right reccurent laryngeal nerve coursed around the right vertebral artery and the right subclavian artery and thus was running in a larger arch than usual.

Fine needle aspiration (FNA) of the thyroid gland is an effective and safe method for evaluating thyroid nodules; catastrophic complications following FNA of thyroid are rare. Massive hematomas with active bleeding leading to airway compromise are extremely rare complications of FNA, with only a few reported cases in literature.

An 80year-old man presented to the emergency room with severe respiratory distress, four hours after undergoing thyroid FNA for the evaluation of a thyroid nodule. An axial neck computed tomography (CT) revealed a large hematoma in the retropharyngeal space that caused anterior deviation of the trachea, with extravasation of contrast media suggesting active bleeding within the hematoma. Right subclavian angiography identified active bleeding from the right inferior thyroid artery (ITA). Transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) was successfully performed with n-Butyl cyanoacrylate (NBCA). Follow-up CT done three weeks after the procedure revealed a low-density lesion in the retropharyngeal space, indicating an old hematoma. The patient recovered well and was discharged 6weeks later.

Appropriate preventive measures should be taken while performing FNA, especially in patients on long-term anticoagulant drugs, and prompt intervention is mandatory for patients with acute hematoma after FNA.

We aimed to formulate a novel predictive nomogram to discriminate liver fibrosis stage in patients with chronic liver disease.

Nomograms were established based on the results of multivariate analysis. The predictive accuracy of the nomograms was assessed by ROC analysis and calibration. Decision curve analysis (DCA) was used to determine the clinical benefit of the nomograms.

INR, platelets, and N-terminal propeptide type III collagen (PIIINP) were independent predictors for advanced liver fibrosis (≥ S3) and cirrhosis (S4) in patients with chronic liver disease in the training cohort. In the training set, the areas under the ROCs (AUROCs) of nomogram S3S4, APRI, FIB-4, and GPR for stage ≥ S3 were 0.83, 0.71, 0.68, and 0.74, respectively; the AUROCs of nomogram S4, APRI, FIB-4, and GPR for stage S4 were 0.88, 0.74, 0.78, and 0.79, respectively. The calibrations showed optimal agreement between the prediction by the established nomograms and actual observation. In the validation set, the AUROCs of nomogram S3S4, APRI, FIB-4, and GPR for stage ≥ S3 were 0.86, 0.79, 0.78, and 0.81, respectively; the AUROCs of nomogram S4, APRI, FIB-4, and GPR for stage S4 were 0.88, 0.77, 0.81, and 0.83, respectively. Furthermore, the decision curve analysis suggested that the nomograms represent better clinical benefits in both independent cohorts than APRI, FIB-4, and GPR.

Pulmonary mucormycosis caused by Mucorales is a highly lethal invasive fungal infection usually found in immunocompromised patients. Isolated pulmonary mucormycosis in immunocompetent patients is very rare. Here, we present a case of a 32-year-old male who developed pulmonary mucormycosis without any known immunodeficiency.

The patient presented to our hospital because of cough and chest pain along with blood in the sputum. He was first treated for community-acquired pneumonia until bronchoalveolar lavage fluid culture confirmed the growth of Absidia. His symptoms were relieved with the use of amphotericin B, and he eventually recovered. We also provide a systematic review of relevant literature to summarize the characteristics of pulmonary mucormycosis in immunocompetent patients.

Pulmonary mucormycosis has variable clinical presentations and is difficult to identify. Due to its high fatality rate, clinicians should make judgements regarding suspected cases correctly and in a timely manner to avoid misdiagnosis and delayed treatment.
