As global surgery is now an academic discipline, this pilot study sought to understand how different faith ideologies influence surgeon motivations and subsequent culture of the global surgery landscape. Interviews were conducted with North American surgeons who pursue global surgery significantly in their career. Points of discussion included early influences, obstacles, motivations, philosophy and approach to global surgery work, and experiences with faith-based (FBO) and non-faith-based organizations (NFBO). Notes were transcribed and thematic analysis performed. Sixteen surgeons were interviewed (11 men, 5 women, ages 39-75 years-old). Surgeons had worked in 32 countries with FBO and NFBO in intermittent or long-term capacity. Religious upbringing and current affiliations included Atheism, Protestant Christianity, Catholicism, Hinduism, Judaism, Mormonism, Islam, and nonreligious spirituality. Early influences included international upbringing (n = 7), emphasis on service (n = 9), and exposure to the religious mission concept (n = 6). The most common core motivation among all participants was addressing disparities (n = 10). Some believed that FBO and NFBO have different goals (n = 4), and only surgeons identifying with Christianity believed the goals are similar (n = 3). Participants expressed that FBO are exclusive (n = 4) and focused on proselytization (n = 6) while NFBO are humanitarian (n = 3) but less integrated into the community (n = 4). Global surgeons have shared early influences, obstacles, and desire to address disparities. Perceptions of FBO and NFBO differed based on religious background. Since so much is at stake, it is a good time to step back and look at the big picture. Most humans, especially those in the “civilized world” have been slaves for so long, we do not even realize it.

In my case, when I was 17 years old, the zeitgeist in the street was that if I went to university I would be “brainwashed and turned into a consumer.” Since a fish does not know water exists until it jumps for the first time, I decided the best way to learn about civilization was to leave it. So, I hitchhiked my way down to the Amazon. there was a middle-class style American settlement. The people there were looking to convert uncontacted tribes into Christianity. They would fly over their villages in small planes and have arrows and spears shot at them. They dropped bags containing cooking pots, mirrors, and other accessories of civilization along with microphones. Then they would listen in on their conversations to try to learn their language. Finally, when they thought the natives were ready, they would appear in person to begin preaching. This was a process designed to turn them into slaves so that the corporations could later move in, cut down the forests, drill for oil and put the original inhabitants into shanty towns.

This is something that happened to our ancestors thousands of years ago. When I visited the P2 Freemason controllers of Western civilization, they admitted to me their version of Christianity was a religion designed to control slaves.

Getting back to the Amazon, after I arrived by boat at a Shipibo Indian settlement, I took out some Peruvian money to try to “buy” things from them. They reacted with disgust at this unhygienic paper -with no intrinsic value- and would have nothing to do with it. They were only interested in physical items in my possession. By contrast, Western peoples have been so brainwashed by this “money majick” that we will strip naked, work 80-hour weeks and otherwise degrade ourselves for this “paper.” Now, most money doesn’t even have paper to back it, it is just numbers inside computers.

The Shipibo shaman I studied under was heir to thousands of years of traditional knowledge about healing. He was better at healing local ailments than Western doctors and so was more popular than them. So, what did the Western doctors do? They killed him.

Western medicine developed as an expression of Christian charity and played a large role in the growth of the early church. Despite its original foundation in Christian moral principles, modern medicine has deviated from its origins. The principles of human dignity, solidarity, and subsidiarity have been subjugated to a materialist and transactional construct that forms the basis of the contemporary medical delivery and financing systems. The dehumanization of both healthcare practitioners and patients by the partnership of governmental and corporate entities, and the use of health care as a political instrument, has debased the original mission of the medical profession and represents an affront to the principles of Catholic social teaching (CST). This essay explores the ways in which the US medical delivery and financing systems violate the principles of CST by means seldom recognized due to the inurement of the public and medical professionals. By examining the prevailing healthcare model through the lens of CST, the author illustrates the ways in which CST principles are systematically violated. This analysis serves as the foundation of a Catholic response to the question of how faithful Christians might live out their calls to holiness through the exercise of their professional vocations. A vision of an invigorated model of medicine as vocation, along with illustrative examples, is presented. While the actual and potential harm due to COVID-19 is far more severe than influenza, the harms due to the NPIs-that have clearly reduced mortality due to COVID-19-are also significant. With government-ordered "lockdowns" across the globe, many arguments for and against returning to normal social and economic activity have been reported, and in fact, Americans are divided about how and when to "open up." These arguments seem to fall into two major categories. Utilitarianism suggests that suspension of civil liberties and constitutional rights is a necessary response, while Libertarianism supports individual decision-making and greatly reduced government mandates. Protesters around the country have been vocal about one or the other points of view. First, we consider in detail the potential harms of severe acute respiratory syndrome virus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) if left unchecked by NPIs. Second, we look at harms due to restricted social and economic activity on human morbidity and mortality. Finally, we offer a framework based on the four pillars of Catholic Social Teaching and the principle of double effect that offers a more humane solution than Utilitarian or Libertarian principles alone.Burnout is highly prevalent among physicians and is associated with negative patient outcomes.
