Government Overreach: DOJ’s Unprecedented Demand for Trump Supporters’ Twitter Data Raises Alarm

In a move that has sent shockwaves through the political landscape, the Department of Justice (DOJ) has taken an extraordinary step in its investigations surrounding former President Trump. The DOJ, under the direction of special prosecutor Jack Smith, has issued a sweeping demand to a major social media platform for a comprehensive list of users who have interacted with Trump’s account. This includes those who have retweeted, liked, or mentioned the former president’s Twitter handle.

The implications of this action are far-reaching and have raised serious concerns about privacy and the potential for political targeting. The order, which was accompanied by a nondisclosure directive preventing the social media company from informing the affected users, represents an unprecedented intrusion into the digital lives of private citizens.

Critics argue that this latest development is indicative of a broader pattern of politicization within federal law enforcement agencies. They claim that the DOJ’s actions go beyond legitimate investigative practices and veer into the territory of political persecution. The term “political hitman” has been used to describe the special prosecutor at the helm of this operation, suggesting a vendetta-driven probe rather than an impartial pursuit of justice.

John Whitehead (attorney) cautioned that any digital ID system adopted in the U.S. would likely be used by the government to control its citizens.

Despite a well-documented pattern of lawlessness by the FBI, including a failure to comply with even the most modest reforms, the secret court charged with ensuring FISA surveillance is lawful has essentially given the FBI unlimited mulligans for all of its unconstitutional acts.

'The court’s decision is an important victory for science...'

(Headline USA) A state appeals court ruled that California can continue providing personal information of gun owners to researchers to study gun violence, reversing last year’s decision by a lower court judge who said such data sharing violates privacy rights.

In 2021, Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a law allowing the state’s Department of Justice to share identifying information of more than 4 million gun owners in California with qualified research institutions to help them better study gun violence, accidents and suicides.

The information — which the state collects with every firearm sale to perform background checks — include names, addresses, phone numbers, and any criminal records, among other things. Under the law, researchers can use the information and make their findings public, but can’t release any identifying information of gun owners.

In response, gun owners and organizations sued the state, arguing that the disclosure of their information violates their privacy rights. San Diego County Superior Court Judge Katherine Bacal ruled to temporarily block the law last October.
