Young Love Tested By War's Crucible

In the tumultuous backdrop of pre-Revolutionary Boston, a romance blossoms between Henry Knox, an enterprising bookseller, and Lucy Flucker, the daughter of a prominent Loyalist family. Their courtship, blossoming amidst political turbulence, faces numerous challenges, including stark opposition from Lucy's family. Yet, their love proves resilient, and in 1774, amidst the brewing storm of revolution, they marry.

The honeymoon period for the Knoxes is short-lived. The Battles of Lexington and Concord erupt, and Henry joins the Continental Army. As the war intensifies, Henry's commitment to the revolutionary cause deepens, leading to prolonged separations that weigh heavily on the couple. Lucy, torn between her Loyalist upbringing and her husband's revolutionary fervor, finds herself in a world of uncertainty.

Lucy's letters to Henry during these separations are poignant, filled with yearning and concern. "Is my Harry well? Does he reflect how wretched he has left me?" she writes in one. Her words echo the sentiments of countless others who faced similar separations during the war.

Despite their different backgrounds and the immense pressures of war, Lucy and Henry's love endures. Their correspondence reveals not just the strains of wartime separation but also the growth and maturing of their relationship. They navigate disagreements and hardships, with their letters serving as lifelines, keeping their connection alive across the distance.

As the war concludes with an American victory, the Knoxes reunite. For them, the end of the war brings a chance to rebuild their lives together. The joys of victory are secondary to the simple, profound happiness of being reunited. Their enduring bond, tested and strengthened by the crucible of war, becomes a testament to the power of love and commitment in the most challenging times.

CV NEWS FEED // The Democratic Attorney General of Washington D.C. is targeting Leonard Leo, a Catholic lawyer who was instrumental in setting the stage for the overturning of Roe v. Wade.

Attorney General Brian Schwalb announced last week that he is investigating Leo and a few of the many conservative non-profit organizations with which he has worked.
The extent and purpose of the investigation is unclear, though it comes several months after the left-wing Campaign for Accountability (CfA) filed a complaint with the Internal Revenue Service alleging improper payments at what it called ‘Leo-affiliated nonprofits,’” the Catholic News Agency reported Friday:

Among those nonprofits are the 85 Fund, the Federalist Society, the Concord Fund, and several other prominent conservative political groups that distribute funding to major conservative causes.
David Rivkin, an attorney for Leo and the associated non-profits, called the complaint “sloppy, deceptive and legally flawed,” adding that he and he and his team are “addressing this fully with the DC Attorney General’s office.”

Politico noted that Schwalb “has a background in tax law and served as a trial attorney in the tax division of the Department of Justice under President Bill Clinton.” He was elected last November and assumed office in January.
CatholicVote reported in July that
Leo, a practicing Catholic, is the Co-Chairman and former Executive Vice President of the Federalist Society (FedSoc). During several Supreme Court nomination battles, Leo would take a leave of absence from the Federalist Society in order to play an instrumental role in the vetting, nomination, and confirmation processes of several of the justices in the Supreme Court’s 6-3 majority which overturned Roe.

Since the Dobbs decision, Leo’s home has been the site of many pro-abortion demonstrations, where protestors have regularly berated him with anti-Catholic slurs.
CatholicVote Vice President Joshua Mercer responded to the news of the investigation this week by pointing out the obvious enmity between Leo and the “pro-abortion establishment” in D.C.

On this day in 1775, the “shot heard round the world” occurs at Lexington Green! It had been mere hours since Paul Revere ended his famous ride from Boston to Lexington (see previous post). Seven hundred British soldiers were en route to Concord. Their goal? They wanted to seize the weapons and supplies that Americans had stored at Concord, Massachusetts. In the early morning hours of April 19, the British troops ran into about 70 American minutemen on Lexington Green. These men were led by Capt
