We found that the disturbance of ENMs on soil microbes are in the follow of Fe3O4>TiO2>SiO2. Exposure of Fe3O4 ENMs significantly reduced the abundance of nitrogen-fixation related bacteria Bradyrhizobiaceae (from 2.94% to 2.40%) and iron-redox bacteria Sediminibacterium (from 2.15% to 2.07%). Additionally, Fe3O4 ENMs significantly increased populations of Nocardioides (from 1.63% to 1.77%), Chitinophaga sancti (from 1.12% to 2.08%), Pantoea (from 1.31% to 2.22%), Rhizobiumand (from 1.41% to 1.74%) and Burkholderia-Paraburkholderia (from 1.50% to 2.09%), which are associated with carbon cycling and plant growth promoting. This study provides a perspective on the response of rhizosphere microbial community and low molecular weight metabolites to ENMs exposure, providing a comprehensive understanding of the environmental risk of ENMs.Exposure to metal nanoparticles causes both pulmonary and systemic effects. Nanoparticles can enter the circulation and act directly or indirectly on blood cells, such as monocytes. Monocytes/macrophages are among the first cells to home to inflammatory sites and play a key role in the immune response. Here we investigated the effects of nickel nanoparticles (Nano-Ni), partially [O]-passivated Nano-Ni (Nano-Ni-P), and carbon-coated Nano-Ni (Nano-Ni-C) on MMP-2 and MMP-9 production in mouse primary monocytes both in vitro and in vivo and explored the potential mechanisms involved. The dose- and time-response studies showed that exposure of primary monocytes from wild-type (WT) mice to 30 μg/mL of Nano-Ni for 24 h caused significant MMP-2 and MMP-9 production; therefore, these dose and time point were chosen for the following in vitro studies. Nano-Ni and Nano-Ni-P caused miR-21 upregulation, as well as MMP-2, MMP-9, TIMP-1 and TIMP-2 upregulation in monocytes from WT, but not miR-21 knock-out (KO), mice, indicating the important role of miR-21 in Nano-Ni-induced MMPs and TIMPs upregulation. However, Nano-Ni-C did not cause these effects, suggesting surface modification of Nano-Ni, such as carbon coating, alleviates Nano-Ni-induced miR-21 and MMPs upregulation. These results were further confirmed by in vivo studies by intratracheal instillation of nickel nanoparticles into WT and miR-21 KO mice. Finally, our results demonstrated that exposure of primary monocytes from WT mice to Nano-Ni and Nano-Ni-P caused downregulation of RECK, a direct miR-21 target, suggesting the involvement of miR-21/RECK pathway in Nano-Ni-induced MMP-2 and MMP-9 production.The emergence of organophosphorus flame retardants and the efficient removal from aquatic environments have aroused increasing concerns. The Urea functionalized Fe3O4@LDH (Urea-Fe3O4@LDH) was prepared and used to adsorb triphenyl phosphate (tphp) for the first time. The tphp adsorption capacity was up to 589 mg g-1, and the adsorption rate reached 49.9 mg g-1 min-1. Moreover, the influences of various environmental factors (pH, ionic strength and organic matter) on the tphp adsorption on the Urea-Fe3O4@LDH were investigated. The initial pH of the solution significantly affected the tphp adsorption, whereas the ionic strength and HA slightly affected the adsorption. The main adsorption mechanism was attributed to electrostatic interaction and π-π interaction. We believe that urea is one of excellent functional groups for the tphp adsorption removal and the materials with urea groups as the adsorbents exhibit good prospects in the future.

In the present study, we propose a morphological approach that enables the detection and quantification of cancer cells with hybrid E/M states, i.e., which combine partially epithelial (E) and partially mesenchymal (M) states. This approach is based on a sequential immunohistochemistry technique performed on the same tissue section, the digitization of whole slides, and image processing. The aim is to extract quantitative indicators able to quantify the presence of hybrid E/M states in large series of human cancer samples and to analyze their relationship with cancer aggressiveness. As a proof of concept, we applied our methodology to a series of about a hundred urothelial carcinomas and demonstrated that the presence of cancer cells with hybrid E/M phenotypes at the time of diagnosis is strongly associated with a poor prognostic value, independently of standard clinicopathological features. Although validation on a larger case series and other cancer types is required, our data support the hybrid E/M score as a promising prognostic biomarker for carcinoma patients.Pepper (Capsicum spp.) is one of the major vegetable crops grown worldwide largely appreciated for its economic importance and nutritional value. This crop belongs to the large Solanaceae family, which, among more than 90 genera and 2500 species of flowering plants, includes commercially important vegetables such as tomato and eggplant. The genus includes over 30 species, five of which (C. annuum, C. frutescens, C. chinense, C. baccatum, and C. pubescens) are domesticated and mainly grown for consumption as food and for non-food purposes (e.g., cosmetics). The main challenges for vegetable crop improvement are linked to the sustainable development of agriculture, food security, the growing consumers' demand for food. Furthermore, demographic trends and changes to climate require more efficient use of plant genetic resources in breeding programs. Increases in pepper consumption have been observed in the past 20 years, and for maintaining this trend, the development of new resistant and high yielding varieties is demanded. The range of pathogens afflicting peppers is very broad and includes fungi, viruses, bacteria, and insects. In this context, the large number of accessions of domesticated and wild species stored in the world seed banks represents a valuable resource for breeding in order to transfer traits related to resistance mechanisms to various biotic stresses. In the present review, we report comprehensive information on sources of resistance to a broad range of pathogens in pepper, revisiting the classical genetic studies and showing the contribution of genomics for the understanding of the molecular basis of resistance.The synthesis of five hydroxycinnamoyl amides (HCAs) was accomplished and their identification and quantification in the green coffee bean samples of Coffea arabica, Coffea canephora, and Coffea liberica was performed. The HCAs p-coumaroyl-N-tyrosine 1b, caffeoyl-N-phenylalanine 2b, caffeoyl-N-tyrosine 3b, and p-coumaroyl-N-tryptophan 4b were characteristic of the C. canephora species while caffeoyl-N-tryptophan 5b was present in both C. canephora and C. arabica, but with higher content in C. canephora. The HCAs presence was also analyzed in C. liberica for the first time and none of the targeted compounds was found, indicating that this species is very similar to C. arabica species. Between C. canephora samples from various origins, significant differences were observed regarding the presence of all the HCAs, with C. canephora from Tanzania containing all five derivatives.Lung cancer is one of the major causes of death worldwide. Natural molecules with anti-lung cancer potential are of a great interest and considered as very promising alternative to substitute or enhance the efficiency of the conventional drugs. Recently, algae as source of high value-added compounds are considered as very promising source of these bioactive molecules. These are secondary metabolites that consist mainly of derivatives of peptides, carbohydrates, and lipids with various structures. Accordingly, various mechanisms by which different algae molecules demonstrate attenuation of tumor angiogenesis were stated and discussed. The mode of action of the algae bioactives is closely related to their nature and chemical structure. Furthermore, this literature review considers the synergistic effect between microalgae bioactives and conventional drugs and discuss the economic feasibility of producing microalgae bioactives at large scale to conclude with some future perspectives related to algae-based drug discovery.BACKGROUND We used the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) to determine the differences in mortality and medical burden between patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) with and without stroke. METHODS We enrolled participants aged ≥20 years and defined four subgroups in this study, namely patients with COPD (International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9 CM) 491, 492, 494, and 496), patients with COPD with stroke (ICD-9 CM 430-438), with COPD without stroke, and comparison subgroups. We calculated the hazard ratios and 95% CIs for all-cause mortality risk, average duration of hospitalization, and frequency of medical visits in these subgroups after adjustments were made for age, sex, and comorbidities. All participants were followed until the date of death, the date they were censored, the date they withdrew from the NHIRD, or 31 December, 2013. RESULTS In total, 9.70% (men vs. women, 11.19% vs. 8.28%) of patients with COPD developed subsequent stroke during the 14 year follow-up.
