Abnormal MRI brain findings were detected in 16% of patients, mostly of encephalomalacia. Conclusion Uremic neuropathy was highly prevalent in children with CKD on maintenance hemodialysis. They developed polyneuropathy, mostly of an axonal polyneuropathy pattern. EEG is a useful method for early recognition of subclinical uremic encephalopathy and/or epileptogenic activity. Early demonstration and management of uremic neurological conditions may decrease the physical disability of CKD patients. Background Currently, most studies indicate that there is a potential link between maternal psychologic stress and the risk of atopic dermatitis (AD) in offspring. However, it is unknown which trimester of pregnancy is most sensitive to maternal stress in terms of risk of infant AD and whether the changes of maternal stress level in different trimesters of pregnancy may be associated with infant AD. In this study, we aimed to investigate the association between maternal perceived stress across three trimesters of pregnancy and AD in infants at 6 months. Methods A total of 1,638 pregnant women participated in the population-based birth cohort study. Maternal prenatal stress was assessed by self-report questionnaires during each trimester. Infant AD was diagnosed at age 6 months, according to the UK Working Party diagnostic criteria. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression models were used to analyze the association between maternal prenatal stress in each trimester of pregnancy and infant AD. Results Maternal perceived stress in the 2nd trimester was associated with AD in infants at 6 months (aOR 1.56; 95% CI 1.08-2.25, P = 0.019). Furthermore, increased level of perceived stress from the 1st to the 2nd trimester (aOR 2.05, 95% CI 1.33-3.15, P = 0.001) and from the 1st to the 3rd trimester (aOR 1.92, 95% CI 1.22-3.00, P = 0.004) were also associated with the risk of infant AD at 6 months. Conclusion A high level of maternal perceived stress in the 2nd trimester and increased level of perceived stress from the 1st to the 2nd and 3rd trimesters of pregnancy may increase the risk of offspring developing AD at 6 months.
Causes, clinical features, and diagnostic approaches for small bowel (SB) bleeding were analyzed to derive recommendations in dealing with this clinical condition.

We included 54 patients undergoing surgical treatment for SB bleeding, from January 2009 to December 2019. Detailed clinical data, diagnosis procedures, and causes of bleeding were collected.

Among 54 cases with SB bleeding, the most common causes were tumors (64.8%), followed by angiopathy (14.8%), ulcers (9.3%), diverticula (5.6%), tuberculosis (3.7%), and enteritis (1.9%). Most tumors (32/35 cases, 91.4%) and vascular lesions (8/8 cases, 100%) were located in the jejunum. The incidence of tumors was higher in the older (30/41 cases, 73.1%) than that in patients younger than 40 years of age (5/13 cases, 38.5%,
< 0.01). Common initial findings were melena (68.5%) and hematochezia (31.5%). The overall diagnostic yield of computed tomographic enterography (CTE) was 57.4% (31/54 cases), with the figures for tumors, vascular lesions, and inflammatory lesions being 71.4% (25/35 cases), 62.5% (5/8 cases), and 12.5% (1/8 cases), respectively. Double-balloon enteroscopy (DBE) definitively identified SB bleeding sources in 16/22 (72.7%) patients.

Tumors, angiopathy, ulcers, and diverticula were the most common causes of SB bleeding in Northern Vietnamese population. CTE has a high detection rate for tumors in patients with SB bleeding. CTE as a triage tool may identify patients before double-balloon enteroscopy because of the high prevalence of SB tumors.

Both nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and ischemic heart disease have common pathogenic links. Evidence for the association of NAFLD with acute coronary syndromes (ACS), complex multivessel coronary artery disease (CAD), and increased mortality risk in ACS patients is still under investigation. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review aiming to clarify these gaps in evidence.

We conducted a systematic search on PubMed and EMBASE with predefined keywords searching for observational studies published till August 2020. NAFLD diagnosis was accepted if confirmed through biopsy, imaging techniques, surrogate markers, or codes. Full articles that satisfied our inclusion and exclusion criteria were included in the systematic review. We used the NHLBI quality assessment tool to evaluate included studies.

Seventeen observational studies with a total study population of approximately 21 million subjects were included. Eleven studies evaluated whether NAFLD is an independent risk factor for developing ACcorrelated with complex multivessel CAD, mortality, and in-hospital MACE in ACS patients.
NAFLD patients are associated with an independently increased risk of developing ACS, mainly in Asian populations, with inconsistent results in North American and European individuals. Moreover, NAFLD and hepatic steatosis severity were both independently correlated with complex multivessel CAD, mortality, and in-hospital MACE in ACS patients. We present a case of Takotsubo (stress-induced) cardiomyopathy (TCM) in a healthcare worker that occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic. TCM, or broken-heart syndrome, has various presentations. This case sheds light on how stress due to the COVID-19 pandemic may cause cardiac illness in healthcare workers.
The various symptoms indicating Takotsubo cardiomyopathy are characterized and defined.Physicians should be aware that stress in healthcare workers may cause heart disease.

In this period two swabs had been negative for SARS-CoV-2. Clinical examination was normal. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/ly2780301.html During this admission a third SARS-CoV-2 swab was negative, and investigations showed mildly elevated inflammatory markers, mildly deranged liver function, atypical lymphocytes on a blood film and a normal chest x-ray. Her Epstein-Barr virus serology was positive and thus the diagnosis was infectious mononucleosis.
SARS-CoV-2 is not the only virus to cause loss of taste/smell and so other differential diagnoses should be considered.Loss of taste/smell is a subjective symptom, and therefore caution should be exercised in the context of an upper respiratory tract infection.

Ring sideroblasts show abnormal mitochondrial iron accumulation, and their emergence in the bone marrow is a characteristic of sideroblastic anemias (SAs). SAs are a group of heterogeneous congenital and acquired disorders. Congenital SA is a rare disease caused by gene mutations involved in heme biosynthesis, iron-sulfur cluster biosynthesis, and mitochondrial protein synthesis. SAs can also occur after exposure to certain drugs or alcohol and due to copper deficiency (secondary SA). Furthermore, SAs are associated with myelodysplastic syndrome (idiopathic SA), strongly correlating with specific somatic mutations in splicing factor 3b subunit 1 (SF3B1), which is involved in the RNA splicing machinery. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/e1210.html Recent reports have indicated that common defects in iron/heme metabolism underlie in the mechanisms of ring sideroblast formation in congenital and acquired SAs. Current understanding of SA pathophysiology, including the mechanisms of ring sideroblast formation, is discussed in this review.Anemia remains an important complication of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Relative erythropoietin deficiency was assumed to be the main cause of anemia in CKD. In contrast, it is possible that iron dysregulation for erythropoiesis in CKD patients also affects not only anemia but also cardiovascular event or survival of these patients. A prospective observational study was conducted for 3 years on 1,000 maintenance hemodialysis patients. In time-dependent cox hazard analysis, we found the higher risks of cardiovascular disease (HR 4.45, p less then 0.001) and all-cause mortality (HR 5.8, p less then 0.001) in patients with low transferrin saturation (TSAT) ( less then 20%) and high ferritin levels (≥100 ng/ml) who are suspected to have iron dysregulation for erythropoiesis compared with patients with high TSAT and low ferritin level. From these results, we hypothesized that iron dysregulation in CKD patients is closely associated with various complications and survival. Moreover, iron administration should be approached with caution in patients who present with iron dysregulation for erythropoiesis.Iron is essential to maintain cellular homeostasis, such as hemoglobin synthesis, mitochondrial respiratory chain formation, DNA replication, DNA demethylation, and histone demethylation. In addition, iron acts as a catalyst to produce reactive oxygen species, including hydroxyl radicals, which induce 8-OHdG production and DNA double strand breaks. Hence, the total body iron level should be strictly regulated. Recently, hepatic hepcidin was found to inhibit iron absorption from the gastrointestinal tract, and hepcidin production is reduced by erythroid factors, such as growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15) and erythroferrone. Systemic iron kinetics seem to be regulated by cooperation among the liver, gastrointestinal tract, and hematopoietic tissues. However, this cooperation could be disturbed in bone marrow failure syndrome (BMFS). In some anemic disorders, such as β-thalassemia, and some categories of MDS, GDF15 or erythroferrone were overproduced and promoted iron absorption. Frequent blood transfusions rapidly increase iron accumulation in the body and eventually result in irreversible organ damage, such as heart failure. Therefore, the introduction of an early intervention to improve iron overload in BMFS is necessary. In recent years, oral chelators have been introduced for clinical use. Erythropoiesis-stimulating agents and thrombopoietin receptor agonists could also improve refractory anemia or BMFS and improve iron overload.A 72-year-old man with ileocecal lymphadenopathy was found to have Epstein-Barr virus-positive diffuse large B-cell lymphoma using open biopsy, and an ileostoma was created. R-CHOP-like chemotherapy was initiated, but his malnutrition did not improve. After 3 cycles of chemotherapy, a 2-m-long Cestoda was removed from the stoma and was identified as Diphyllobothrium nihonkaiense using mitochondria cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 targeted polymerase chain reaction analysis. Although D. nihonkaiense infections are asymptomatic, the ileostomy was thought to have exacerbated the malabsorption in this patient. Parasitic infections are rare; however, they should be added to the differential diagnosis of malnutrition of unknown cause during chemotherapy for hematological malignancies.A 56-year-old woman was referred to our hospital with symptoms of swelling, purpura, and pain in her limbs. Prior to referral, bleeding in her limbs had spontaneously appeared and disappeared several times. Prothrombin time (PT) and activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) were prolonged, and the factor II level was 17%. The plasma-mixing test indicated lupus anticoagulant (LA), which was confirmed using aPTT-LA and dilute Russell's viper venom time (dRVVT). Therefore, she was diagnosed with lupus anticoagulant-hypoprothrombinemia syndrome (LAHPS). During screening for underlying disorders, chest computed tomography (CT) revealed a retrosternal mass. Biopsy was not performed because the administration of freshly frozen plasma failed to correct her coagulopathy. Prednisolone (PSL) treatment (1 mg/kg) was initiated, which normalized the coagulation tests. The retrosternal mass also disappeared. PSL was tapered without LAHPS recurrence; however, the follow-up CT revealed systemic lymphadenopathy. Follicular lymphoma was diagnosed using lymph-node biopsy. Considering the subsequent LAHPS recurrence, six cycles of bendamustine + rituximab were administered. Complete response with no LAHPS recurrence was observed at the time of drafting this report. LAHPS is rare and distinct from antiphospholipid syndrome because it can cause severe bleeding. Underlying disorders should be evaluated in cases of LAHPS.A 58-year-old man was admitted with shortness of breath in September 2019. He had a severe hemolytic anemia with a high cold agglutinin (CA) titer. He also had arthralgia and finger deformation. He was diagnosed with cold agglutinin syndrome (CAS) secondary to rheumatoid arthritis (RA) based on the clinical course. Occasionally, CAS has been reported to occur in parallel with collagen disease, infectious disease, or malignant tumor. CAS developing secondary to collagen disease occurs less frequently than that to infectious disease or malignant tumors. Furthermore, CAS caused by RA is very rare, even among patients with collagen diseases. Our patient was effectively treated with immunosuppressive therapy including abatacept, which attenuated the symptoms of CAS and RA.

Several studies have explored the prognostic value of MicroRNA-153 (miR-153) in various cancers, but obtained inconsistent results. Thus, we conducted a meta-analysis to assess the prognostic significance of miR-153 for patients with cancer.

Eligible studies were identified by searching the online databases Pubmed, Embase, Web of Science, Medline, and the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) up to March 2020. Hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% CIs and were calculated to clarify the correlation between miR-153 expression and prognosis of different cancers. Odds ratios (ORs) with 95% CI were selected to appraise the correlation between miR-153 with clinicopathological characteristics of cancer patients.

In total, 933 patients from 11 articles were enrolled in our meta-analysis. The results revealed that low miR-153 expression was significantly correlated with poor overall survival (OS) (HR = 2.45, 95% CI = 1.66-3.63, P < .001), but not with disease-free survival (DFS) (HR = 1.67, 95% CI = 0.45-6.19,ed that low miR-153 expression is associated with poor prognosis. miR-153 may serve as an effective predictive biomarker for tumor prognosis, especially for digestive system tumor and breast cancer.
Since December 2019, COVID-19, caused by the new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), posed a serious threat to human health. On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization announced that COVID-2019 has become a global pandemic. In China, Reduning injection (REDI) and Xuanfeibaidu formula (XFF) is widely used in treating COVID-19. However, there is no evidence-based medical evaluation that XFF combine with REDI is effective for COVID-19.

The following databases will be searched China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang database, Chinese Science and Technology Periodical Database, Medline/PubMed, and Cochrane from October 1, 2019 to September 1, 2020. The suitable articles will be comprehensively and systematically searched without limitations of regions or language about REDI with XFF for COVID-19. The meta-analysis was performed by RevMan 5.3 and STATA 14.2 software.

This meta-analysis may help provide clarify on the effect of REDI combined with XFF to treat COVID-19. The result will be published at a peer-reviewed journal.

This systematic review aims to provide new evidence of XFF combined with REDI for the treatment of COVID-19 in terms of its efficacy and safety.

The Corona Virus Disease, 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic revealed many social disparities that already exist in countries that have social inequalities in their historical context. Studies have already been published on the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of population groups considered to be at risk where they reveal that Black people are at greater risk of becoming ill and dying from this cause. In this context, this protocol describes a systematic review that aims to analyze the association of race as the higher risk for illness and death due to COVID-19.

This protocol will be developed based on the recommendations of Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA-P). For this, we will conduct searches in the PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Lilacs, and ScienceDirect databases in the search for cross-sectional studies. All cross-sectional studies that analyzed hospitalization and death by COVID-19 as race in its determinant will be included. The search will be carried s existing racial differences.Record of systematic review CRD42020208767.
Magnesium sulfate combined with low-dose aspirin can significantly reduce adverse reactions and effectively lower blood pressure in patients with pregnancy induced hypertension, but the overall efficacy and safety of the combination of drugs are not clear. DOI 10.17605/OSF.IO/SZFGB.Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) has a distinctive geographical distribution in China, especially southern China. There are several risk factors for NPC, such as Epstein-Barr virus, genetics, and environmental exposures. Although the incidence of eye metastasis (EM) is lower than metastasis in other body parts, it often indicates poor prognosis. We assessed several serum biomarkers for their ability to predict EM in NPC. Patients with NPC were selected (n = 963), and were separated into two groups, EM and no eye metastasis. Ten factors were analyzed in both groups including triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein, low-density lipoprotein, alkaline phosphatase, alpha fetoprotein, carbohydrate antigen-199, cancer antigen-153, apolipoproteins AI, apolipoprotein B, and cytokeratin fragment 19 (CYFRA21-1). https://www.selleckchem.com/ Independent t tests, binary logistic regression, and receiver operating characteristic curves were used to assess the data. The EM group had significantly higher CYFRA21-1 and lower TG compared with the no eye metastasis group. Areas under the curve for CYFRA21-1, TG and CYFRA21-1/TG were 0.966, 0.771, and 0.976, respectively. The corresponding cut-off values were 12.12 ng/ml, 0.41 mmol/L, and 13.5. The sensitivity and specificity of CYFRA21-1/TG were 100% and 92.2%, respectively. The increased ratio of CYFRA21-1 to TG can be an accurate method to detect EM in patients with NPC.

We provide an explicit route to the Lagrange multipliers of the system and identify those operators that act as the dominant constraints.Despite the fact that anisotropic particles have been introduced to describe molecular interactions for decades, they have been poorly used for polymers because of their computing time overhead and the absence of a relevant proof of their impact in this field. We first report a method using anisotropic beads for polymers, which solves the computing time issue by considering that beads keep their principal orientation alongside the mean local backbone vector of the polymer chain, avoiding the computation of torques during the dynamics. Applying this method to a polymer bulk, we study the effect of anisotropic interactions vs isotropic ones for various properties such as density, pressure, topology of the chain network, local structure, and orientational order. We show that for different classes of potentials traditionally used in molecular simulations, those backbone oriented anisotropic beads can solve numerous issues usually encountered with isotropic interactions. We conclude that the use of backbone oriented anisotropic beads is a promising approach for the development of realistic coarse-grained potentials for polymers. The σ-hole⋯σ-hole stacking interaction, an unrecognized type of noncovalent interaction, has been found to be present in large quantities in the Cambridge Structural Database. In the σ-hole⋯σ-hole stacking interaction, each of the two interacting σ-holes has the dual electron donor/electron acceptor character; when one σ-hole acts as an electron donor, the other σ-hole acts as an electron acceptor, and vice versa. The σ-hole⋯σ-hole stacking interaction is clearly different from the σ-hole bond in which the charge transfer occurs mainly from the electron donor to the σ-hole. Energy component analysis shows that the σ-hole⋯σ-hole stacking interaction is dominated by the dispersion energy, which is similar to the nature of the aromatic stacking interaction between unsaturated molecules or the σ⋯σ stacking interaction between saturated molecules. In this work, we develop the free-energy spectrum theory for thermodynamics of open quantum impurity systems that can be either fermionic or bosonic or combined. We identify two types of thermodynamic free-energy spectral functions for open quantum systems and further consider the thermodynamic limit, which supports the Gaussian-Wick description of hybrid environments. We can then relate the thermodynamic spectral functions to the local impurity properties. These could be experimentally measurable quantities, especially for the cases of quantum dots embedded in solid surfaces. Another type of input is the bare-bath coupling spectral densities, which could be accurately determined with various methods. For illustration, we consider the simplest noninteracting systems, with focus on the strikingly different characteristics between the bosonic and fermionic scenarios. We present in detail and validate an effective Monte Carlo approach for the calculation of the nuclear vibrational densities via integration of molecular eigenfunctions that we have preliminary employed to calculate the densities of the ground and the excited OH stretch vibrational states in the protonated glycine molecule [Aieta et al., Nat Commun 11, 4348 (2020)]. Here, we first validate and discuss in detail the features of the method on a benchmark water molecule. Then, we apply it to calculate on-the-fly the ab initio anharmonic nuclear densities in the correspondence of the fundamental transitions of NH and CH stretches in protonated glycine. We show how we can gain both qualitative and quantitative physical insight by inspection of different one-nucleus densities and assign a character to spectroscopic absorption peaks using the expansion of vibrational states in terms of harmonic basis functions. The visualization of the nuclear vibrations in a purely quantum picture allows us to observe and quantify the effects of anharmonicity on the molecular structure, also to exploit the effect of IR excitations on specific bonds or functional groups, beyond the harmonic approximation. We also calculate the quantum probability distribution of bond lengths, angles, and dihedrals of the molecule. Notably, we observe how in the case of one type of fundamental NH stretching, the typical harmonic nodal pattern is absent in the anharmonic distribution. Most of the methods presently available to investigate the molecular magnetic response work extremely well for the computation of properties, such as magnetizability and nuclear magnetic shielding, but they provide insufficiently accurate current density maps, in that they do not guarantee exact conservation, leading to unphysical features in maps. The present study starts from the results obtained by Epstein and Sambe and moves forward to generalize them. An off-diagonal hypervirial relationship, connecting the matrix elements of a given differentiable function of position f(r) to its derivatives ∇f(r), via the anticommutator ∇αf,p^α+ with the canonical momentum operator p^, has first been proven. Afterward, this relationship is applied to show that the equations proposed by Sambe to check the quality and conservation of computed electronic current densities can be obtained as particular cases of this general theorem, with a substantial gain in computational efficiency. Connections with previous work by Arrighini, Maestro, and Moccia are outlined, and the implications that hint at future work are discussed.Monte Carlo simulations were performed to study the phase behavior of equimolar mixtures of spheres and cubes having selective inter-species affinity. Such a selectivity was designed to promote the formation of the substitutionally ordered NaCl compound, the "C* phase," and to be driven not only by energetic bonds but also by entropic bonds generated by dimples on the cube facets. Nestling of the spheres in the cube indentations can promote negative nonadditive mixing and increase the C* phase packing entropy. The focus is on congruent phase behavior wherein the C* phase directly melts into, and can be conveniently accessed from, the disordered state. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/azd4547.html A specialized thermodynamic integration scheme was used to trace the coexisting curves for varying the values of the interspecies contact energy, ε*, the relative indentation size, λ, and the sphere-to-cube size ratio, ζ. By starting from a known coexistence point with ε* > 0 and λ = 0 (no indentation), it is found that increasing λ (at fixed ε* and ζ) reduces the free-energy and pressure of the C* phase at coexistence, indicative of stronger entropic bonding.

Our strategy suggests that CE protocols might be exploited to lower the overall costs of production of CdTe thin films employed in photovoltaic technology, which are currently fabricated at high temperatures (above 350 °C), using post-process ligand-stripping steps. We report here the synthesis of undoped and Cu-doped Cs2ZnCl4 nanocrystals (NCs) in which we could tune the concentration of Cu from 0.7 to 7.5%. Cs2ZnCl4 has a wide band gap (4.8 eV), and its crystal structure is composed of isolated ZnCl4 tetrahedra surrounded by Cs+ cations. According to our electron paramagnetic resonance analysis, in 0.7 and 2.1% Cu-doped NCs the Cu ions were present in the +1 oxidation state only, while in NCs at higher Cu concentrations we could detect Cu(II) ions (isovalently substituting the Zn(II) ions). The undoped Cs2ZnCl4 NCs were non emissive, while the Cu-doped samples had a bright intragap photoluminescence (PL) at ∼2.6 eV mediated by band-edge absorption. Interestingly, the PL quantum yield was maximum (∼55%) for the samples with a low Cu concentration ([Cu] ≤ 2.1%), and it systematically decreased when further increasing the concentration of Cu, reaching 15% for the NCs with the highest doping level ([Cu] = 7.5%). The same (∼2.55 eV) emission band was detected under X-ray excitation. Our density functional theory calculations indicated that the PL emission could be ascribed only to Cu(I) ions these ions promote the formation of trapped excitons, through which an efficient emission takes place. Overall, these Cu-doped Cs2ZnCl4 NCs, with their high photo- and radio-luminescence emission in the blue spectral region that is free from reabsorption, are particularly suitable for applications in ionizing radiation detection. The goal of this article is to answer two questions Has world agricultural convergence occurred? If not, how can this goal be fulfilled? This article introduces a model averaging method to consider both a parametric and a semi-parametric SFA model to better estimate technical efficiency. Then, three types of convergence tests are employed to check if world agricultural catch-up occurs and to determine the degree of convergence across different groups of countries. The empirical results on a balanced panel of 126 countries from 1970-2014 show that world agricultural convergence has not occurred. This article then investigates the situations in different groups of countries and discusses how to use international trade, irrigation system, and structural transformation to improve agricultural efficiency and to diminish the efficiency gap among different countries in the future. This study explores the emergence of a new entrepreneurship phenomenon (digital social entrepreneurship) as a result of the collaboration among many agents (N-Helix), given the government's limited capacity to respond to the stakeholders' needs satisfaction related to an exogenous event (e.g., the COVID-19 pandemic). Our theory development is based on three ongoing academic debates related to (a) the unrepresentativeness of the stakeholder theory in entrepreneurship research; (b) the emergence of digital social entrepreneurship (DSE) as a bridge between stakeholders' needs, socio-economic actors, and digital-social initiatives; and (c) the role of N-Helix collaborations to facilitate the emergence of global knowledge-intensive initiatives and the rapid adoptions of open innovations. Our results support our assumptions about the positive mediation effect of DSE in the relationship between N-Helix collaborations and stakeholders' satisfaction. Notably, results show how pandemic has intensified these relationships and how DSE in N-Helix collaborations can generate social impacts globally. Some implications for policy-makers have emerged from our results that should be considered during/post-COVID-19 pandemic. The present study examines the relationship between Perceived Criticism (PC) and Sensitivity to Criticism (SC) in youth with Bipolar Spectrum Disorder (BPSD), their symptomatic experiences, and family functioning. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/nx-2127.html We hypothesized that findings for youth would be consistent with findings for adults indicating that PC and SC would be associated with a worse clinical presentation, and that associations between family criticism and sensitivity and youth symptoms would be stronger for youth with BPSD than with other clinical diagnoses. We examined 828 youths ages 4-18 years (M=10.9, SD=3.4) and their caregivers from diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds using the Longitudinal Expert evaluation of All Data (LEAD) diagnoses (Spitzer, 1983), the parent-reported General Behavior Inventory (Youngstrom et al., 2001), The Perceived Criticism Scale (Hooley & Teasdale, 1989), and the Family Assessment Device (Epstein et al., 1983). We found significant positive association between parent reports of youth criticalness and more severe manic and depression symptoms, greater mood lability, higher suicidality, and worse overall functioning. Youth with BPSD were significantly more critical and had higher SC than youth without BPSD. Interactions between BPSD and family criticalness and sensitivity were found in their links with youth symptoms. Negative associations between criticism and sensitivity and youth global family functioning were significant only for youth with BPSD. The positive association between criticism and youth mood lability was significant only for youth with BPSD. Our findings suggest that family factors and interactional patterns impact and are influenced by functioning in youth with BPSD and that family-based treatments should be considered routinely with these youth.Fearlessness has been described among the traits associated with psychopathy; however, disparities in conceptualizations of fear and how related elements are operationalized among different measures of psychopathic traits have led to some enduring controversy. Here we address a subset of elements characterizing fearlessness represented in thrill-seeking and physical risk-taking among a large sample of incarcerated individuals (n = 688). We examine these relationships utilizing Hare's Psychopathy Checklist Revised (PCL-R), the Psychopathy Personality Inventory-Short Form (PPI-SF), and the Zuckerman Sensation Seeking Scale (SSS). Among males, the Thrill and Adventure Seeking (TAS) scale of the SSS was not related to features of the PCL-R, but was highly correlated with Fearless Dominance (FD) of the PPI-SF. Among females, TAS was only modestly correlated with PCL-R total score, but neither of the two PCL-R factors. PPI-SF FD remained a strong predictor of TAS among females. We argue for a careful consideration of the boundaries of the term "fearlessness" as it relates to diverse manifestations of behavior and varied conceptualizations of psychopathy.
