Food and beverage industry lobbyists paid dozens of registered dietitians with millions of social media followers to promote aspartame and sugar, The Washington Post found. Aspartame is particularly dangerous for children and has been shown to be toxic to children’s brains, Dr. Michelle Perro, a pediatrician, told The Defender.

Why doesn’t the JECFA recommendation line up with the IARC classification or the May WHO guideline not to use non-sugar sweeteners for weight control?

One possible answer: At least six out of 13 JECFA panel members have ties to the International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI), a longtime Coca-Cola front group.

The World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer in July classified aspartame, a popular artificial sweetener, as “possibly carcinogenic” — but the Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives — which includes members of a longtime Coca-Cola front group — reaffirmed the acceptable daily intake of 40 mg/kg of body weight.
