We assessed the sequential use of ELISA and Immune Trypanolysis (ITL) on dried blood spot (DBS) samples as an alternative to the traditional HAT field testing and confirmation approach. However, local transmission was made possible and consolidated heterogeneously in the city due to housing and socioeconomic characteristics of the population, with 32.8% of autochthonous cases occurring in slums, which held only 6.4% of the city population. A hierarchical spatiotemporal model accounting for imperfect detection of cases showed that, outside slums, less-affluent neighborhoods of houses (vs. apartments) favored transmission. Global and local spatiotemporal point-pattern analyses demonstrated that most transmission occurred at or close to home. Additionally, based on these results, a point-pattern analysis was assessed for early identification of transmission foci during the outbreak while accounting for population spatial distribution. Altogether, our results reveal how social, physical, and biological processes shape dengue transmission in Buenos Aires and, likely, other non-endemic cities, and suggest multiple opportunities for control interventions.
Onchocerciasis (river-blindness) in Africa is targeted for elimination through mass drug administration (MDA) with ivermectin. Onchocerciasis may cause various types of skin and eye disease. Predicting the impact of MDA on onchocercal morbidity is useful for future policy development. Here, we introduce a new disease module within the established ONCHOSIM model to predict trends over time in prevalence of onchocercal morbidity.

We developed novel generic model concepts for development of symptoms due to cumulative exposure to dead microfilariae, accommodating both reversible (acute) and irreversible (chronic) symptoms. The model was calibrated to reproduce pre-control age patterns and associations between prevalences of infection, eye disease, and various types of skin disease as observed in a large set of population-based studies. We then used the new disease module to predict the impact of MDA on morbidity prevalence over a 30-year time frame for various scenarios.

Some species of Pterocarpus are rosewood tree species, having important economic value for timber, and for some species, medicinal value as well. Up to now, information about this genus with regard to the genomic characteristics of the chloroplasts has been limited. Based on a combination of next-generation sequencing (Illumina Hiseq) and long-read sequencing (PacBio), the whole chloroplast genomes (cp genomes) of five species (rosewoods) in Pterocarpus (Pterocarpus macrocarpus, P. santalinus, P. indicus, P. pedatus, P. marsupium) have been assembled. The cp genomes of five species in Pterocarpus have similar structural characteristics, gene content, and sequence to other flowering plants. The cp genomes have a typical four-part structure, containing 110 unique genes (77 protein coding genes, 4 rRNAs, 29 tRNAs). Through comparative genomic analysis, abundant simple sequence repeat (SSR)loci (333-349) were detected in Pterocarpus, among which A /T single nucleotide repeats accounted for the highest proportion (72.8-76.4%). We show that i) intratumoral application of DOX-functionalized MNPs (at least at a concentration of 9.6 nmol DOX/100 mm3 tumor volume) combined with magnetic hyperthermia favors tumor regression in vivo, and there is evidence for an increased effect compared to magnetic hyperthermia alone or to the intratumoral application of free DOX and ii) the presence of the pseudopeptide NucAnt (N6L) on the MNP surface might well be beneficial in its function as carrier for MNP internalization into breast cancer cells in vitro, which could further augment the possibility of the induction of intracellular heating spots and cell death in the future.

To further uncover the underlying mechanism of PLOD3 in PLOD3, we compared the COAD samples of high PLOD3 expression with those of low PLOD3 expression and found that high expression of PLOD3 was associated with reduced expression of immune regulators and enhanced activities of two tumor-promoting pathways, including gluconeogenesis and TGF-beta signaling in epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), suggesting that high expression of PLOD3 causes poor prognosis in COAD by weakening the immune cell infiltration and enhancing activities of tumor-promoting pathways. In summary, the present study highlights the importance of PLOD3 and provides the evidence about the functional role of PLOD3 in COAD.Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) play a significant role in microRNA (miRNA) generation, processing, and function and contribute to multiple phenotypes and diseases. Therefore, whole-genome analysis of how SNPs affect miRNA maturation mechanisms is important for precision medicine. The present study established an SNP-associated pre-miRNA (SNP-pre-miRNA) database, named miRSNPBase, and constructed SNP-pre-miRNA sequences. We also identified phenotypes and disease biomarker-associated isoform miRNA (isomiR) based on miRFind, which was developed in our previous study. We identified functional SNPs and isomiRs. We analyzed the biological characteristics of functional SNPs and isomiRs and studied their distribution in different ethnic groups using whole-genome analysis. Notably, we used individuals from Great Britain (GBR) as examples and identified isomiRs and isomiR-associated SNPs (iso-SNPs). We performed sequence alignments of isomiRs and miRNA sequencing data to verify the identified isomiRs and further revealed GBR ethnographic epigenetic dominant biomarkers. The SNP-pre-miRNA database consisted of 886 pre-miRNAs and 2640 SNPs. We analyzed the effects of SNP type, SNP location, and SNP-mediated free energy change during mature miRNA biogenesis and found that these factors were closely associated to mature miRNA biogenesis. Remarkably, 158 isomiRs were verified in the miRNA sequencing data for the 18 GBR samples. Our results indicated that SNPs affected the mature miRNA processing mechanism and contributed to the production of isomiRs. The objective of the current study was to evaluate the shelf life of peanut butter bites under different storage and packaging conditions and specifically to monitor oxidative stability of the samples over time. Peanut butter bite samples were prepared with three different levels of added antioxidant (vitamin E). Products were sealed in two different types of packaging (metallized polyethylene and plastic polyethylene) and were stored at two different temperatures to determine the rate of deterioration of the product under various conditions. Resource limitation among smallholder farmers renders almost all of the control methods impossible. Development and use of Striga resistant genotypes are seen as the most feasible management option. Marker identification formulates tools that are faster, cheaper, and easier to utilise in breeding for S. asiatica resistance which has low heritability. The objective of this study was to identify single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers for Striga resistance using the genome-wide association study (GWAS). Genotyping by sequencing was done on tropical maize inbred lines followed by their evaluation for Striga resistance. Analysis of variance showed significant (p less then 0.05) variation among evaluated genotypes for Striga resistance traits such as germination distance, germination percentage, haustoria root attachments, total Striga plants emerged, total biomass, and growth rate. There were also significant differences (p less then 0.05) for cobs, leaves, stems, and roots weight. The broad sense heritability was fairly high (up to 61%) for most traits. The means for derived traits on stress tolerance indices were subjected to a t-test, and significant differences (p less then 0.05) were found for leaves, stem, roots, shoots, and total biomass. The Manhattan plots from GWAS showed the presence of three SNP markers on chromosome numbers 5, 6, and 7 for total Striga plants emerged. Yet, methodologies for studying the interplay between learning and change in these initiatives remain scarce, owing to both the "hard to measure" nature of learning and the complexity of large-scale program implementation and evaluation. This paper proposes a new method for studying social learning in the context of large research programs. It aims to analyze the social learning of researchers and practitioners engaged in these programs and assess the contributions of this learning to the resilience of the natural and social systems that these programs seek to influence.
