Our Profile Spotlight is proud to feature Bring Our Troops Home, an organization established by a coalition of Afghanistan and Iraq war veterans and their supporters working to limit US involvement in wars overseas.
Bring Our Troops Home is led by founder Dan McKnight, a thirteen-year U.S. military veteran who served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves, U.S. Army, and Army National Guard; McKnight founded Bring Our Troops Home in 2019.
Their mission is to educate the public- and importantly, our government leaders- about the grim damages resulting from endless wars, and reminding us of the federal duty to formally declare war by Congress only before any U.S. military forces are deployed into combat overseas.
Much of the work from Bring Our Troops Home is focused on education about the constraints given by our Constitution related to war powers, and calls attention to the consequences of Congress ignoring those constraints. The group is also the architect of the “Defend the Guard” movement; Defend the Guard is a series of bills that would that deny a state’s national guard troops overseas deployment without an official declaration of war from Congress. Many military conflicts lack a clear mission or path to an end without the proper declaration of war, leading to enduring disasters such as the war in Afghanistan that lasted for two decades.
