Sixty-one years ago, our country watched as our commander-in-chief was tragically shot in the head and killed. This particular assassination has conjured multiple conspiracy theories throughout the decades. In 2024, it is no longer taboo to believe that our own government played a part in John F. Kennedy's assassination.

On July 13, 2024, many sat in horror as former sitting president and current presidential candidate Donald Trump was rushed off the stage by Secret Service during a rally in Pennsylvania, after shots that injured him and multiple spectators flew across the venue. As theories and criticisms continue to cycle through social media, what are the experts saying regarding the assassination attempt on former President Trump's life?

We sat down with Byron Beplay, a former Army Ranger, executive protection specialist and consultant, to get his expert opinion.

Beplay is no stranger to the creation of potential threats by political opposition. In March 2024, he led the security detail for Kyle Rittenhouse's speaking event at the University of Memphis. "I watched people allow things to happen in hopes that something worse would happen," he said. According to Beplay, the president of the university canceled conservative tickets, making room for BLM to flood the event and allowing people in with potential weapons.

When asked if he believed there were internal failures that led to the assassination attempt on Trump, he responded, "Absolutely; many, many, many failures, on both local law enforcement and the Secret Service. Both agencies failed in the sense of complacency... it's not even just complacency, it's a dereliction of duty."

Secret Service Spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi told media outlets that Secret Service had designated the rooftop used by the would-be assassin under local law enforcement's jurisdiction.

"Secret Service is responsible for the entire venue, regardless of local law enforcement being on the outer perimeter. That is the entire premise of a sniper. He is supposed to be scouting and a reconnaissance element for targets, scanning for targets outside of that venue... A basic trainee out of boot camp can set up a better perimeter than Secret Service and local law enforcement did. That is where my question comes in: What the blank is going on here? Is this a setup?" Beplay explains. He goes on to question why the shooter was able to access the roof and why there was a "pre-positioned ladder." "There are a thousand red flags," he says.

When asked if DEI played a role, specifically referencing the woman who struggled to re-holster her weapon, Beplay answered, "That says to me she's very fresh and/or does not have enough time behind that gun... Secret Service is supposed to be the top executive protection agency in the world, the best of the best, the Delta of executive protection. What we saw was an extremely amateur hour, cowering behind the president himself. The inability to re-holster her weapon and then deciding to leave it out has nothing to do with her sex. I know women who are amazing protection agents and shooters, my wife being one of them. It has to do with, are you capable of doing the right things in the right moment?"

Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle, who is facing widespread criticism and calls for her resignation, explains that the agency's failure to secure the rooftop was due to a safety issue.
"That building in particular has a sloped roof at its highest point. And so, you know, there's a safety factor that would be considered there, that we wouldn't want to put somebody up on a sloped roof," Cheatle said.

Beplay said Cheatle's reason for failing to secure the premises properly is "complete bullshit." "The snipers are actually trained on rooftops that have a higher angle pitch. It's an excuse... as a matter of fact, when I was in Iraq, I was put on a roof that had an extremely high-pitched roof, and on the other side it went straight down like 80 feet... There is so much complacency that it has become blatant dereliction."

As for the iconic photo of Trump pausing to rouse the crowd amid Secret Service rushing him off stage, Beplay noted, "I think it would be way more iconic to see an executive protection agent physically fighting the former president down for his safety."
