If you like options, there are both factory and aftermarket solutions for the OEM ’11-’14 6.7L Power Stroke turbo. Going the factory route, you can install a ’15-’19 unit, the Garrett GT37, essentially using 100-percent OEM, second-generation engine parts (SPE Motorsport’s retrofit install kit is pictured here). The GT37 retains VGT functionality but sports a bigger turbine wheel and a larger, single compressor wheel. It sees lower shaft speeds and rarely overspeeds. The aftermarket path typically points toward the use of a fixed geometry turbo, and namely one of the many popular off-the-shelf BorgWarner S300 or S400’s.
He changed his mind, now have cab fully lifted and new motor here, just waiting for install kit that is back ordered til the cows come home. I did pull the head and found the cause, though. The roller lifters flat spotted on the cam and when clearances got too great, lost contact with the pushrods/rocker arms. If you are building a race truck then you pretty much have no need for a muffler.
There was also a brief moment between 2001 and 2003 when powdered metal con-rods were used. All of this happens with computer and electronic control, allowing for the control of injection events independent of what the crankshaft is doing. HEUI is able to provide peak pressures under a variety of conditions, helping to keep power up, fuel consumption down, and emissions down as well.

Some quirks come with HEUI, such as the fact that you technically cannot run it out of oil. A 7.3-liter Power Stroke holds some 15 quarts of oil. Once you run it below 7 quarts or so, the HEUI system just won’t have enough oil to permit an engine start.

The Monster Exhaust massive over sized tip is aimed out to the side of the truck. This results in 82% less backpressure, leading to more power, throttle response, and increased fuel economy. Let me leave you with one parting thought, regardless of your preference to exhaust systems. Get in the habit of keeping hearing protection handy and wearing it.
By the early 2000s, diesel engines were ramping up in power, leaving the old reliable Navistar engine in the dust. GM truck buyers got to enjoy 300 HP and 520 lb-ft of torque from a 6.6-liter Duramax LB7 V8. Meanwhile, Ram buyers got a 5.9-liter Cummins straight-six with 305 HP and 555 lb-ft of torque.
The remedy to this problem is installing a coolant circuit filtration system, which should catch nasty particles before they plug the oil cooler. As I said before, there is a fix for this, and it’s tossing the factory head bolts in the trash and replacing them with stronger studs (above), hopefully putting blown gaskets in your rearview mirror. As I said earlier, the 7.3-liter Power Stroke is known for relative bulletproof reliability in stock form. Tuners have also found the engine to be receptive to taking on more power, too.
A hundred dollars of earmuffs placed where they are handy are cheap in comparison to thousands of dollars of hearing aids on the kitchen table. The old tractor I used to run the mixer wagon had a straight-piped, naturally aspirated engine. Needless to say, it woke the neighbors if I drove it out on the road.
Any vehicle can have its muffler deleted- if it has one. Straight pipes can refer to muffler deletes, but they can also refer to removing everything in the exhaust system that isn’t pipe. This includes resonators and catalytic converters. Then one day I ran it down to almost E, truck never died, but a few days later I needed 6 injectors. It turns out the injectors are lubricated by the fuel… to the point that running it low, was enough to trash them. No one really explained what happened, so a few months later the same thing happened.
Unfortunately, the cylinder pressure under the head is a lot, and has been found to stretch the stock bolts, leading to an eventual blown head gasket. Reportedly, this happens most often with modified engines, but has happened with stock engines as well. It put Ford back into the diesel truck power wars, and its EGR system satisfied emissions regulations. The variable geometry turbo was also great, allowing for hard power early on and throughout the powerband. Unfortunately, problems started getting reported in 2003 while these engines were still new. International Harvester was even one of the first American companies to put a diesel engine in a light-duty pickup truck.

If you’re loyal to the Blue Oval, the Navistar/Ford 7.3-liter Power Stroke is a legendary engine. It’s been over two decades since the last 7.3 was built, yet enthusiasts continue to pay tens of thousands to own an example of one of greatest diesel engines of all time. Sure, a stock 7.3-liter doesn’t make a ton of power compared to today’s trucks, but these are engines that can last longer than the metal bodies in which they’re packaged.

Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF) are cleaned through regeneration in which scorching exhaust gas temperatures can last up to 20 minutes while driving.
Proponents of Dodge still love the 5.9-liter Cummins 12-valve straight-six turbodiesel and the fact that these engines will probably continue to work after the heat death of the universe. The folks in love with the General dig the 6.6-liter Duramax LBZ turbodiesel V8 for its ability to produce truckloads of power without the complications brought on by modern emissions systems. People are still paying near-new prices for these trucks even though it’s been nearly two decades since they were in production. The 6.7L Power Stroke’s secondary fuel filter (not the one along the frame rail) is notorious for cracking. This on-engine fuel filter is contained within a thin plastic cartridge and the cap is prone to becoming brittle and splitting.
This one is purely up to preference and what you like. The only deciding factor for some in the dual vs single exhaust debacle is a dual exhaust system can be a little more costly. I put this together for a customer, for the millionth time, on which exhaust system is right for a 6.7 Powerstroke. I realized; why don’t I make a blog post that explains which is the best exhaust for a 6.7 Powerstroke? Then I can point all my customers to that instead of repeating myself.
The Garrett GT3782VA turbo in these engines sometimes got gunked up with corrosion and carbon, leading to sticking. Some mechanics remove the cab from above the 6.0 engine to make replacing the turbo and heads easier. Lack of easy access is another downside to these trucks.
Diesel truck fans have a list of engines often considered to be the greatest of all time. Fans of Ford, Chevrolet, and Dodge all have their faves, and that’s not even getting into the mills from outside of America. If it's popping through the intake, that leads me to believe the exhaust valves are not opening up on that cylinder.
Powdered-metal connecting rods also made a return in the 6.0. These rods were panned during their short life in the 7.3, but they found a good home in the 6.0 engine. As DrivingLine explains, the 7.3’s engine revved low and submitted a lot of torque to the rods.

Like anything else, the best course of action regarding your equipment is up to you. Modifications of any kind to the newest of tractors or trucks will almost certainly void your warranty, which is one of the reasons to purchase new machinery in the first place. So for the sake of horsepower and turning the wife’s head (she acts like she doesn’t care – but I know better), the chrome stack stays.
Yet, my van, which was stock, still drove on its original head gaskets and even still had its emissions equipment intact. It got 18 mpg with me behind the wheel — good compared to my friend with a stock 7.3 Power Stroke that got 13 mpg on a good day. Sadly, the van was detuned compared to Super Duty trucks and made 235 HP and 440 lb-ft of torque. But it still made that glorious diesel soundtrack so I didn’t care one bit.
Exhaust MaterialOur exhaust systems are crafted from T-409 stainless steel. Unlike T-304 stainless steel, T-409 is still magnetic. If you’re testing to confirm the material, be aware that a magnet will still stick to it, which is a normal characteristic of T-409 stainless steel. Some cutting may be required to fit shorter wheelbase bed/cab configurations.
Some owners replace the variable geometry turbo with a fixed geometry turbo, conduct more frequent flushing of the oil cooling system, and clean the EGR system. There are a number of issues that plagued the 6.0 engine during parts of its life. Thankfully, time heals a lot of wounds, and there are now solutions to the engine’s infamous issues.

Its exhaust stack, like many modern tractors, runs right up the right-side front pillar of the cab. I replaced its old muffler last year with a straight pipe (chrome, of course, to drive my wife crazy), and for the most part, I like it fine. As Motor Trend notes, regulations for 2003 would have required Ford to equip the aging mill with exhaust gas recirculation, which would have put the 7.3 even further behind the competition. Navistar and Ford decided that the best way forward was to build an all-new engine with the power to compete and the emissions to keep the feds happy. HEUI joins forces with six head bolts per cylinder, a Garrett turbocharger, forged connecting rods, and a fluid-to-fluid oil cooler to provide high performance and a lifespan that could outlive you. Later examples of the 7.3 got a wastegate for the turbo and an air-to-air intercooler.

In those cases, the turbo tends to serve as a bit of a muffler; at least I think it tones down the blare as compared to a naturally aspirated motor. My Wife’s Escape was not quite 4 years old but was over 100k, so Ford told me I could pay for the $2500 complete system replacement or open a window.
Most post-2007 diesel vehicles are fitted with a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) for emissions reasons, however there are a few disadvantages to this device; including constant maintenance and repairs. While blown gaskets are an infamous problem with the 6.0, it’s not the only source of headaches. It’s located at the front of the lifter valley and integrated into the block itself. That’s a lot of important parts that depend on the oil cooler. A lot is going on in the HEUI system, so I’ll try to simplify it. A low-pressure lift pump sends 40 to 70 psi of fuel to the injectors in early Power Strokes.

1963 through 1968 model year C-1100 to C-1300 IH trucks could be had with diesel power, making them what some call America’s first factory-built diesel-powered light-duty trucks. In 2003 Ford began phasing out one of the greatest truck engines of all time. The 7.3-liter Power Stroke served as a reliable workhorse for years, but now it was time for truck buyers to get more power and cleaner emissions. The 6.0-liter Power Stroke launched that year and punched out more power, but also started to punch out wallets with expensive problems. What could have been a beloved follow-up is still hated by many today, and used truck prices reflect it.
Ford used what essentially was a cardboard “bag” attached to the receiver/dryer in the AC system. The cardboard would break down over time, and the desiccant would cycle through the AC system and corrode it from the inside out. We just replaced the turbo earlier this year after its impeller decided to emulate a grenade. We were able to replace it without lifting the cab.

But here are the most common vehicles that we see with straight pipe exhaust or muffler deletes. It had 287,000 miles on its odometer and came with a stack of service paperwork. Big ticket items included four injectors replaced before I bought the van and a turbo perhaps 50,000 miles before that.
Downwind of the turbo on a 6.7L Power Stroke, the cold-side intercooler pipe—which routes boost from the engine’s air-to-water intercooler toward the heads—is well-known for failing. The factory piece is infamous for becoming brittle over time, often cracks under boost, and some of them even explode. It’s a common failure for both ’11-’16 engines and ’17-current versions (as well as in both modified and completely stock engines), and when it strikes you’ve got a giant boost leak.
The key to the VT 365’s increased performance, despite tighter emission controls, rests on several components. First is the Electronic Variable Response Turbocharger (EVRT), which provides improved throttle response and peak torque capability at lower rpm levels. Second, it is equipped with Electro-Hydraulic Generation Two (G2) fuel injection technology, which is based on a low-pressure common rail fuel system. Finally, Intuitive Shift controllers allow for smoother driving to compensate for the use of cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) technology, which cuts oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions. One key component to the 7.3-liter Power Stroke and the Navistar T444E is the HEUI system, which stands for Hydraulically Activated, Electronically Controlled Unit Injector.

But was the 6.0-liter Power Stroke really that bad? OE-quality exhaust products engineered for today's medium-duty and heavy-duty vehicles. A downpipe back exhaust system just means you are going to get everything from the downpipe (the pipe at the very back of the turbo) to the tailpipe (the part that sticks out the back of the truck). You can see the best results from using a downpipe back system for two reasons, 1) if you go up in diameter, you are going to lower EGTs.
Before CP4.2 pump failure took over as the 6.7L Power Stroke’s Achilles Heel, turbo death was arguably more common. On first-generation engines, the Garrett GT32 SST became infamous for overspeed failure. And even though it’s graced with an electronic wastegate, it isn’t enough to bleed off all the drive pressure created at those turbine speeds.
If you’re thinking about changing the exhaust on your vehicle, you may have considered straight pipe exhaust or a muffler delete. In this article, we weigh the pros and cons of muffler deletes and straight pipes against aftermarket performance mufflers. In the early 1980s, right around when the International Harvester name departed from light-duty on-road vehicles, Ford embarked on a journey for a new kind of diesel truck. The diesels of the era were not like the powerful trucks of today, but engines that got better fuel economy than their gasoline counterparts. In at least one case, going diesel even meant giving up on power. The Blue Oval believed it was possible for diesel engines to evolve from thrifty powerplants to ones that delivered a kind of capability, durability, and power never seen before.
For very minimal investment, S&S Diesel Motorsport’s Gen2.1 CP4 disaster prevention kit can save you thousands in the event your 6.7L Power Stroke’s high-pressure fuel pump checks out. Its design supplies both the CP4.2 and its metering unit independently with clean, filtered diesel fuel and reroutes the CP4.2’s case fuel back to the tank. This keeps the fuel injectors, rails and lines from seeing any pump debris (a return filter isolates debris before fuel flows back to the tank). The sound quality from straight pipes and muffler deletes is often very low, and simply cannot match the sound quality of performance mufflers. However, high quality performance mufflers such as Paradox Performance Mufflers offer flow just as good -and sometimes better- than straight pipes. Whereas quality performance mufflers cost at least $80, straight pipes can cost as little as $20 plus installation.
Was having almost as bad of a time with theirs as Ford was with the Power Shift around the same time and earlier, but the cult of VAG can’t admit that their products have any problems. In good news, though, either he or the first owner put on the coolant filtration system, and I believe the head studs have been replaced with the ARP units. All the electronics work, including the lovely and brilliant steering wheel controls for audio and climate controls (why don’t more vehicles have this?!). I mentioned some “bulletproofing” tactics above, but there are others.
The package includes clamps, hangers, and hardware, although you may need to reuse some factory hardware. Exhaust Material – Available in aluminized steel or T-409 stainless steel. Aluminized steel is our most popular but will eventually accumulate surface rust.
Starting with the worst, we begin with the 6.7L Power Stroke’s CP4.2 high-pressure fuel pump. The twin-piston Bosch pump, which is responsible for pressurizing fuel as high as 30,000 psi, is notorious for self-destructing. And when it comes apart, metal debris flows out to the fuel rails, and is often sent through the engine’s expensive piezoelectric injectors. Worse yet, the fuel system’s return circuit is also contaminated, with the fuel tank, fuel supply (and return) lines and even the lift pump requiring replacement and/or cleaning. It’s a failure that, while it may only occur on 1-percent of all engines, costs upward of $10,000 to fix. Since replacing the 6.4L Power Stroke, and the problematic 6.0L Power Stroke before that, Ford’s 6.7L Power Stroke has been a significant force in the world of diesel trucks.

Some believe that a 6.0 can be a reasonably reliable engine if it’s left stock and you’re anal with your maintenance. This is a departure from the 7.3, which can seemingly take all kinds of abuse all day every day. But, if you’re the kind of person who drives a stock truck, you may not get burned by a 6.0.
Tuner Required – Removal of the DPF, CAT, SCR, and/or DOC involves removing and eliminating emission related sensors. A DPF delete capable tuner is required to prevent any check engine light or diagnostic trouble codes from setting. If you don’t already have a DPF delete capable tuner we recommend the Ez lynk here. Fuel Mileage – Expect to see a significant increase in fuel mileage. If your DPF is plugged up your probably averaging about mpg.

The powertrain control module commands an injection event and the injector driver module triggers the injector solenoids. When this happens, the solenoid pulls an internal poppet valve off of its seat, allowing high-pressure oil into the injector. That oil comes courtesy of a high-pressure oil circuit charged by the high-pressure oil pump. The HPOP sends high-pressure oil into the injectors, which forces a piston in the injector down, lifting a nozzle. The nozzle then opens and 3,000 psi of fuel pressure multiplies to 21,000 psi of fuel pressure in the cylinder. In theory, the 6.0 had the right ingredients to rise to stardom.

Several loose rocker arms, loose pushrods, low pushrods(1 inch gap to rocker arms), several pushrods almost off their valves. When time permits(shop very busy this week)I am going to remove the VC. Have to do it with only a partial cab lift as per service manager. Bruno says it has zero physical compression, if the ex valves were stuck closed he'd still have compression. Some searching of the web shows you can get newer 6.0-equipped trucks for a similar price to older 7.3s with more miles. Since we’re talking about oil, let’s look at the injectors. Oil pressurized as high as 3,600 PSI enters the injector through an electronically-actuated spool valve. The oil-actuated injector fires fuel into the cylinder at 26,000 PSI, 5,000 PSI better than the outgoing 7.3 engine. There are a lot of parts that can fail related to the injectors. You need low-pressure diesel fuel, a 48-volt, 20-amp coil to operate the spool valve, and high-pressure oil that hopefully isn’t blazing hot.
