Designing innovative (nano)detection platforms, respecting their low-cost and fabrication simplicity, capable to chemically detect multiple target analytes by employing the same engineered device, is still a great challenge in the multiplexed biosensor development. In this scientific context, in the current manuscript, we exploit the low-cost plasmonic calligraphy as a versatile approach to directly draw continuous plasmonic lines on Whatman paper using a regular ballpoint pen successively filled with two different anisotropic nanoparticles shapes (gold bipyramids-AuBPs and gold nanorods-AuNRs) as colloidal inks. After the efficient immobilization of the positively-charged AuBPs and AuNRs onto the paper fibres, proved by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) investigations, the specificity of our as-calligraphed-paper platform is ensured by coating the selected lines with a thin layer of anionic poly(styrene sulfonate) polyelectrolyte, creating, consequently, a well-defined plasmonic array of charge-selective regions. Finally, the functionality of the well-isolated and as-miniaturized active plasmonic array is, subsequently, tested using the anionic Rose-Bengal and cationic Rhodamine 6G target analytes and proved by complementary dual optical "ON/OFF Switch" sensing (i.e. Surface-enhanced Raman Scattering sensing/metal-enhanced fluorescence sensing) onto the same plasmonic line, developing thus a simple multiplexed plasmonic array platform, which could further facilitate the well-desired biomarker detection in complex mixtures. We propose herein a unique mechanism of generating tunable surface charges in a metal-dielectric Janus nanopore for the development of nanofluidic ion diode, wherein an uncharged metallic nanochannel is in serial connection with a dielectric nanopore of fixed surface charge. In response to an external electric field supplied by two probes located on both sides of the asymmetric Janus nanopore, the metallic portion of the nanochannel is electrochemically polarized, so that a critical junction is formed between regions with an enriched concentration of positive and negative ions in the bulk electrolyte adjacent to the conducting wall. The combined action of the field-induced bipolar induced double layer and the native unipolar double layer full of cations within the negatively-charged dielectric nanopore leads to a voltage-controllable heterogenous volumetric charge distribution. The electrochemical transport of field-induced counterions along the nanopore length direction creates an internal zone of ion enrichd-charge electrokinetic phenomena for a high degree of freedom ion current control. This study proposes negative capacitance vacuum channel transistors. The proposed negative capacitance vacuum channel transistors in which a ferroelectric capacitor is connected in series to the gate of the vacuum channel transistors have the following two advantages first, adding a ferroelectric capacitor in series with a gate capacitor makes the turn-on voltage lower and on-off transition steeper without causing hysteresis effects. Second, the capacitance matching between a ferroelectric capacitor and a vacuum channel transistor becomes simplified because the capacitance of a vacuum channel transistor as seen from a ferroelectric capacitor is constant.Ionic liquids (ILs) are increasingly used in elastomer technology due to unique physico-chemical properties, which are stable at the temperature of preparation and during processing of rubber compounds. The latest IL application concept is supported ionic liquid-phase (SILP) materials, where an IL film is immobilized on the solid phase. The main aim of this work was studying the influence of IL immobilized on the surface of solid supports, such as silica and carbon black, on the vulcanization process, mechanical properties, and thermal behavior of ethylene-propylene-diene (EPDM) elastomer. Application of the SILP materials enabled the control of EPDM vulcanization without deterioration of the crosslink density, damping properties, thermal stability, and resistance of the vulcanizates to thermo-oxidative aging. Slight improvements in the tensile strength and hardness of the vulcanizates were observed.Exposure to Legionella spp. contaminated aerosols in hotel settings confers risk for travel-associated Legionnaire's disease (TALD). In this study, we investigated the prevalence of Legionella contamination and its molecular diversity in hotels and resorts across Israel. The study was comprised of a convenience sample of water systems from 168 hotels and resorts countrywide, routinely inspected between March 2015 and February 2017. Isolation and quantitation of Legionella were performed in a water laboratory using the ISO 11731 method. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/kribb11.html The distribution of Legionella isolates was analyzed according to geography and source. The genetic diversity of a subset of isolates was analyzed by sequence-based typing (SBT) at the National Reference Laboratory for Legionella and compared to the national database. Out of 2830 samples tested, 470 (17%) obtained from 102 different premises (60% of hotels) were positive for Legionella spp. In 230 samples (49% of all positive, 8% of total samples), accounting for 37% of hotels, Legionella spp. counts exceeded the regulatory threshold of 1000 CFU/L. The most frequently contaminated water sources were cooling towers (38%), followed by faucets, hot tubs, water lines, and storage tanks (14%-17% each). Furthermore, 32% and 17% of samples obtained from cooling towers and hot tubs, respectively, exceeded the regulatory thresholds. SBT was performed on 78 strains and revealed 27 different sequence types (STs), including two novel STs. The most prevalent STs found were ST1 (26%), ST87 (10%), ST93 (6%), and ST461 and ST1516 (5% each). Several L. pneumophila STs were found to be limited to certain geographical regions. This is the first study to investigate the prevalence and diversity of Legionella in hotels and resorts in Israel during non-outbreak environmental inspections. These findings will inform risk assessment, surveillance, and control measures of TALD.

Semen concentration, and percentages of motile, morphologically normal and live spermatozoa, and the total number of morphologically normal, progressive motile spermatozoa per ejaculate (TNM) were analyzed for 2832 semen evaluations performed over a 15-year period. KWPN-Harness horses had a significantly lower sperm concentration, % motile spermatozoa and % live spermatozoa than KWPN-Riding horses but the % motile and % morphologically normal spermatozoa and TNM in both KWPN-Harness and KWPN-Riding horses were significantly higher than in Friesian horses and Shetland ponies. These results suggest a lower semen quality in KWPN-Harness than KWPN-Riding horses, potentially as a result of a higher coefficient of inbreeding. The negative trend observed in the KWPN-Harness horses may be a warning sign, and breeders or stud books should monitor the degree of inbreeding carefully to avoid a further reduction in semen quality, to the levels observed in Friesian horses and Shetland ponies.Letrozole is used for the treatment of subfertility in women undergoing ovarian superstimulation, but the mechanism of action has not been investigated critically. The objective was to test the hypothesis that treatment with letrozole will potentiate the superstimulatory response following gonadotropin treatment by increasing the number of follicles present at ovarian follicular wave emergence in cattle. In Experiment 1, ovarian follicular wave emergence was synchronized among beef heifers (n = 8) by transvaginal ultrasound-guided follicle ablation. On Day 0 (wave emergence), a letrozole-releasing device (LRD) was placed intravaginally for 5 days, followed again by transvaginal follicle ablation on Day 5. The number of follicles ≥3 mm was recorded by transrectal ultrasonography on Days 0 and 6.5 (i.e., pre- vs. post-LRD treatment). In Experiment 2, non-lactating dairy cows were assigned randomly to one of two groups (n = 15/gp) after follicle ablation-induced synchronization of wave emergence (Day 0), and giv CL on Day 12 (15.9 ± 2.5 vs. 19.0 ± 2.0; P = 0.32) between the LRD and sham groups. In summary, treatment with letrozole did not increase the number of antral follicles at wave emergence or the superstimulatory response, but increased precision in the interval to estrus and may be useful for artificial insemination at a fixed time in superstimulatory protocols.Consultations entail transitions in care between referrers and consultants, as patients visit different clinicians and care sites. This complex process has been consistently prone to communication breakdowns. Despite expectations and benefits of electronic health records (EHRs), incomplete, vague, or inappropriate referrals continue to hinder consultations; referrals can be sent to the wrong specialty service; and consultation findings frequently fail to reach referrers. Due to the inadequate support of interpersonal communication afforded by EHRs, these issues persist. Important aspects of ergonomics and human factors engineering frequently appear overlooked during the design and implementation of EHRs. Usability issues have contributed to delays in medical diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up. Some of these delays contribute to patient harms. Our multidisciplinary team of clinicians and ergonomics professionals reflects on referral and consultation. We describe how computerization in healthcare should benefit from approaches informed and developed through applied ergonomics and human factors.
This study assessed the work-related physical demands of short-distance truck drivers employed by a large gas delivery company in Canada.

A total of 19 truck drivers participated in the data collection, which included a combination of self-reports, field observations and direct measurements to report on the work shift task composition, postures, physical workload, and force exertions.

Driving (mean of 43% of daily work shift) and delivering gas cylinders to customers (28%) were the main tasks of the truck drivers. Delivering gas cylinders measured as moderate level work and daily work duration was not excessive with respect to mean cardiac strain for most drivers. However, manual handling and force exertion activities were frequent and deemed unsafe most of the time with respect to existing guidelines on manual materials handling.

This study documents physical risk factors that are consistent with musculoskeletal pain prevalence reported for short-distance truck drivers.

We previously reported on 40 patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) identified 1999-2005 at our center, and showed that a higher proportion had an axonal pattern, compared to Europe and North America.

Retrospective chart review of 100 adult patients with GBS between 2006 and 2018 at Shamir Medical Center.

46.8% of those with an abnormal EMG had an axonal pattern. Of the 60 patients who presented with mild disease (defined as Hughes score 1-2), walking deteriorated in 35 (58%, considering any worsening of Hughes score). 20 patients (33%) lost the ability to walk independently (Hughes score 3), 8 reached a point they could not walk (Hughes 4), and 2 needed mechanical ventilation. Ninety-four of 100 patients (94%) were treated with intravenous immunoglobulins (IVIg). https://www.selleckchem.com/products/thz1.html Using ECG monitoring and DVT prophylaxis, IVIg-related adverse reactions were rare.

This study demonstrated a higher proportion of axonal GBS patients in Israel, compared to European and North American patients, replicating the findings in the 1999-2005 patients. Due to the progressive nature of the disease, with more than half of patients presenting with mild disease deteriorating and needing inpatient rehabilitation - we advocate initiation of treatment once a clinical diagnosis of GBS is made.

Today on “Truth in Media”, the situation in Syria continues to deteriorate. It looks like an all-out war is in the making.

Militants have fanned out from the northern city of Aleppo and renewed their offensive. Meanwhile, the U.S. is conducting airstrikes against the Syrian government and allied forces.

Russia is also taking the battle to the air in support of its ally Syria, as tens of thousands of Iraqi Shia soldiers have entered the country to aid President Assad’s embattled forces.

So, are we heading to World War III officially? When will these proxy wars spill out into a full-fledged war pitting the West against Russia, Iran, and its allies?

Today on “Truth in Media”, Free Speech was on the ballot in a big way this year, and President-elect Donald Trump is definitely coming through in a big way for the American people.

Trump has nominated Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) to serve as his Attorney General and lead the Justice Department. It’s a masterful stroke that will spearhead Trump’s free speech policies.

Federal agencies will no longer be able to collude with tech companies to label speech as “disinformation” or “misinformation”. That means major revisions to Section 230. Trump aims to end the censorship regime and prevent tech and big data companies from deleting their records before he gets into office.

A new “cooling-off” period will see officials from the three-letter agencies barred from taking jobs in big tech for a period of seven years, ending the revolving doors between big data and the government.

If all of this takes place, expect shadowbanning to go the way of the dinosaurs!

Joining me today is independent investigative journalist, Vanessa Beeley, here to discuss the growing world-war dynamic in the Middle East and the ongoing genocide in Gaza that is now being recreated in Lebanon with little to no push back by the supposed "rules-based international order". We also discuss how the global technocratic elitists are using Gaza as a testbed for artificial intelligence -- fine tuning for future military use on a mass scale, as well as domestic control structures -- and how the rising global resistance is not just about the future of Gaza, but the future of us all.

Today on “Truth in Media”, Kamala Harris sets fire to her campaign with a disastrous interview on Fox News with Bret Baier.

Almost 80% of Americans are dissatisfied with the direction of the country. Did Harris not know this and why hasn’t she done anything about it?

TJ Roberts, candidate for Kentucky’s House of Representatives joins Ben Swann to figure out just how much longer Kamala Harris can continue to bomb and still put up competition to former President Donald Trump.

Meanwhile, Kalshi gives Trump a 56% likelihood of winning the presidency, his highest odds yet.

And another $400+ million to Ukraine has all of social media hammering Secretary of State Antony Blinken as a traitor to the American people.

Welcome to The Daily Wrap Up, a concise show dedicated to bringing you the most relevant independent news, as we see it, from the last 24 hours.

God will destroy Israel for its wickedness, the Health Ranger Mike Adams warns in his sermon for the Abundance Church

https://www.naturalnews.com/2024-12-21-sermon-66-god-will-destroy-israel-wickedness.html

The Health Ranger Mike Adams expounded on how God will destroy Israel for its wickedness in his 66th sermon for the Church of Natural Abundance. The Bible nutrition educator based his sermon on a passage in the book of the Prophet Ezekiel. According to Adams, Israel is currently engaged in ongoing bombing campaigns of three Middle East […]

This paper discusses, from a mathematician's point of view, the thesis formulated by Israel Gelfand, one of the greatest mathematicians of the 20th century, and one of the pioneers of mathematical biology, about the unreasonable ineffectiveness of mathematics in biology as compared with the obvious success of mathematics in physics. The author discusses the limitations of the mainstream mathematics of today when it is used in biology. He suggests that some emerging directions in mathematics have potential to enhance the role of mathematics in biology. We compared the magnitude of muscular strength changes among older women occupants of different strength tertiles in response to progressive resistance-training (RT). Additionally, we examined the possibility of older women initially characterized as weak (occupants of the lower tertile of strength status) can achieve a higher muscular strength level to be inserted into a better category (middle or upper tertiles). The present investigation was attended by 113 physically independent older women (>60 years old). Muscular strength was assessed by one-repetition maximum (1RM) tests on chest press, preacher curl, leg extension exercises, and by the isokinetic (ISOK) peak torque of knee extension and flexion at 60 and 180°/s angular velocities. The RT lasted 12 weeks (3 x/week) and consisted of eight exercises for the whole body. The participants were divided into tertiles (LOWER, MIDDLE, and UPPER) according to the performance at baseline for each strength measure. After RT, the LOWER tertile showed more significant magnitude gains than the UPPER tertile to the 1RM in leg extension and preacher curl and isokinetic measurements (6.9-36.3%). A considerable number of older women increased muscular strength enough to move from LOWER to MIDDLE or UPPER tertiles. From our results, it can be inferred that older women occupants of the lower strength tertile show more significant muscular strength gains when compared to their stronger counterparts. Moreover, 12 weeks of RT seem to be sufficient to transfer older women previously characterized as "weak" to a better category.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) defined constitution as a health statue or physical fitness that determines individual susceptibility to diseases. Yin deficiency constitution (YinDC) is a type of constitution closely related to aging. Previous studies found that the characteristic genes of YinDC are part of the inflammatory aging signaling pathways (e.g., NF-kappa B). Therefore, the aim of the study was to further reveal the dysregulation of genes associated with inflammatory aging in YinDC women.

This study adopted the industrial standard of constitutional judgment, and screened YinDC (n=30) and Balanced constitution (BC) (n=30) from women between the ages of 35 to 49, a range categorized as the degenerating period by TCM. Five genes CCL4, BCL2A1, NFKBIA, TAK1, and IL-8 were analyzed by qRT-PCR.

Logistical regression revealed the correlation between body constitution and the expression of the five genes the expression of NFKBIA and CCL4 mRNA was significantly up-regulated, whereas the expression of BCL2A1 mRNA was significantly down-regulated in YinDC (P<0.05). Age or weight, when included in the model, did not affected the correlations.

Increased mRNA expression of CCL4 and NFKBIA and decreased mRNA expression of BCL2A1 may be the molecular basis of premature aging of YinDC women. These results provide a mechanistic basis for early conditioning of YinDC, anti-aging, and the prevention of aging-related diseases.

Mind-body integrative health (MBIH) interventions to improve adolescent sleep are lacking. The study characterized sleep quality and bedtime-related psychosocial stressors among urban minority adolescents, explored associations between demographics factors, stressors and sleep quality, and gauged interest in a MBIH sleep intervention.

167 school-based health center (SBHC) patients (mean age = 16.3; 64 % female; 68 % Latino) participated in a needs assessment as part of a quality improvement project. They reported bedtime-related psychosocial stressors using items from the Adolescent Sleep Hygiene Scale (ASHS), sleep quality using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and interest in a MBIH-based sleep intervention. Chi-square and logistic regression examined associations between demographics, stressors, sleep quality, and interest in the intervention.

67 % had poor sleep quality. Females, compared to males, had 2.23 higher odds (95 % Confidence Interval [CI] 1.12, 4.42) of having poor sleep qualityportunity for practitioners and complementary therapists to offer MBIH interventions to a population at high-risk for poor sleep quality.
Higenamine (HG), is one of the main active components in many widely used Chinese herbs, and a common ingredient of health products in Europe and North America. Several groups, including our own, have previously shown the beneficial effects of HG against cardiomyocyte death during acute ischemic damage. However, the effect of HG on chronic cardiac remodeling, such as cardiac fibrosis, remains unknown.

Herein, we aim to investigate the role of HG in cardiac fibrosis in vivo as well as its cellular and molecular mechanisms.

Chronic pressure overload with transverse aortic constriction (TAC) significantly increased cardiac hypertrophy, fibrosis, and cardiac dysfunction in mice, which were significantly attenuated by HG. Consistently, cardiac fibrosis induced by the chronic infusion of isoproterenol (ISO), was also significantly reduced by HG. Interestingly, our results showed that HG had no effect on adult mouse CM hypertrophy in vitro. However, HG suppressed the activation of cardiac fibroblasts (CFs) in vitro. Furthermore, TGF-β1-induced expression of ACTA2, a marker of fibroblast activation, was significantly suppressed by HG. Concomitantly, HG inhibited TGF-β1-induced phosphorylation of Smad2/3 in CFs. HG also reduced the expression of extracellular matrix molecules such as collagen I and collagen III. To our surprise, the inhibitory effect of HG on CFs activation was independent of the activation of the beta2 adrenergic receptor (β2-AR) that is known to mediate the effect of HG on antagonizing CMs apoptosis.

Our findings suggest that HG ameliorates pathological cardiac fibrosis and dysfunction at least partially by suppressing TGF-β1/Smad signaling and CFs activation.

Sheba Medical Center, Tel Hashomer, is a tertiary hospital located in the center of Israel. It is the largest hospital in Israel and was the first to face coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) patients in the country at the beginning of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic.

To describe our experience with the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on our triage method in the emergency department (ED). Our goal was to keep the main hospitalization buildings clean of infection by separating COVID-19 positive patients from COVID-19 negative patients.

We divided our ED into two separate sections a regular non-COVID-19 ED and an advanced biological ED. We created clear protocols of triage for suspected and confirmed COVID-19 patients. We reviewed the data of patients admitted to our ED during the month of March and analyzed the results of our triage method in separating COVID-19 positive from negative patients.

During the month of March 2020, 7957 patients were referred to our ED. Among them 2004 were referred to the biological ED and 5953 were referred to the regular ED. Of the 2004 patients referred to the biological ED, 1641 (81.8%) were sampled for SARS-CoV-2 polymerase chain reaction of whom 143 (8.7%) were positive. Only two COVID-19 positive patients unintentionally entered the main clean hospital, making our triage almost full proof.

Our triage method was successful in separating COVID-19 positive from negative patients and maintained the regular hospital clean of COVID-19 allowing treatment continuation of regular non-COVID-19 patients.

G protein-activated inwardly rectifying potassium (GIRK) channels are related to rewarding effects of addictive drugs. The GIRK2 subunit is thought to play key roles in the reward system. Weaver mutant mice exhibit abnormal GIRK2 function and different behaviors that are caused by several addictive substances compared with wild-type mice. However, mechanisms of reward-related alterations in weaver mutant mice remain unclear. The present study investigated changes in the rewarding effects of methamphetamine (METH) in weaver mutant mice.

The rewarding effects of METH (4.0mg/kg) were investigated using the conditioned place preference (CPP) paradigm. Extracellular dopamine level in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) was measured by in vivo microdialysis. To identify brain regions that were associated with these changes in rewarding effects, METH-induced alterations of Fos expression were investigated by immunohistochemical analysis.

Weaver mutant mice exhibited a significant decrease in METH-induced CPP and dopamof dopamine and decreased neural activity in the pNAc shell that is partially attributable to the change of GIRK channel function. GIRK channels, especially those containing the GIRK2 subunit, appear to be involved in METH dependence.Genetic circuits have many applications, from guiding living therapeutics to ordering process in a bioreactor, but to be useful they have to be genetically stable and not hinder the host. Encoding circuits in the genome reduces burden, but this decreases performance and can interfere with native transcription. We have designed genomic landing pads in Escherichia coli at high-expression sites, flanked by ultrastrong double terminators. DNA payloads >8 kb are targeted to the landing pads using phage integrases. One landing pad is dedicated to carrying a sensor array, and two are used to carry genetic circuits. NOT/NOR gates based on repressors are optimized for the genome and characterized in the landing pads. These data are used, in conjunction with design automation software (Cello 2.0), to design circuits that perform quantitatively as predicted. These circuits require fourfold less RNA polymerase than when carried on a plasmid and are stable for weeks in a recA+ strain without selection. This approach enables the design of synthetic regulatory networks to guide cells in environments or for applications where plasmid use is infeasible.Platinum drugs are heavily used first-line chemotherapeutic agents for many solid tumours and have stimulated substantial interest in the biological activity of DNA-binding metal complexes. These complexes generate DNA lesions which trigger the activation of DNA damage response (DDR) pathways that are essential to maintain genomic integrity. Cancer cells exploit this intrinsic DNA repair network to counteract many types of chemotherapies. Now, advances in the molecular biology of cancer has paved the way for the combination of DDR inhibitors such as poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibitors (PARPi) and agents that induce high levels of DNA replication stress or single-strand break damage for synergistic cancer cell killing. In this review, we summarise early-stage, preclinical and clinical findings exploring platinum and emerging ruthenium anti-cancer complexes alongside PARPi in combination therapy for cancer and also describe emerging work on the ability of ruthenium and gold complexes to directly inhibit PARP activity.
To gain a better understanding of the traumatic mechanism and to develop appropriate treatment for dislocation of the shoulder joint with an ipsilateral humeral shaft fracture.

This was an observational and descriptive study. Nine patients with traumatic shoulder dislocations associated with ipsilateral humeral shaft fractures who visited the emergency room and received treatment from January 2012 to June 2018 were retrospectively analyzed. CT with three-dimensional reconstruction was performed to provide precise anatomical information of the fractures. The traumatic event and the type of fracture of the humeral shaft were analyzed to help determine the trauma mechanism. Closed reduction of the dislocation was attempted at once under intravenous anesthesia. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/ink128.html One patient died the following day due to unrelated causes. All humeral shaft fractures of the eight patients received internal fixation, and then reduction of the dislocation was performed again if previous attempts failed. The affected limb was immobilized in a sling for 3 weeks postoperatively, and then active and passive movement was encouraged.
