OBJECTIVES To evaluate two visual aid devices in blind dogs. MATERIALS AND METHODS Transit time and number of collisions through a maze were recorded for 12 chronically and irreversibly blind dogs. Each dog repeated the maze while fitted with a BlindSight® echolocation device, or Muffin's Halo® physical barrier. They then repeated another maze test after a 30-day device acclimation period at home. RESULTS All dogs had fewer collisions when wearing the halo device versus their baseline with no device. Dogs ≤11.8 kg had fewer collisions when acclimated to the halo versus their baseline with no device or when acclimated to the BlindSight®. For dogs >11.8 kg, maze completion time was faster when acclimated to the BlindSight® versus their baseline with no device or when acclimated to a halo. Owner surveys indicated no noticeable improvement in quality of life or dog navigation at home with either device. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE This study demonstrates the utility of commercially available visual aid devices in aiding blind dogs' navigation and may help veterinarians make recommendations to owners of blind dogs regarding the purchase of these devices. © 2020 British Small Animal Veterinary Association.Robert Fine was among the most original social theorists in Britain of the past 30 years, and the aim of this paper is to offer a first systematic assessment of his intellectual contribution. There are sound intellectual reasons to explore Fine's scholarship. He maintained a problematic relation with mainstream sociology and, against the reduction of sociology to questions of method, culture, or class, he argued that sociologists must continue to ask difficult normative questions as part of the social world they ought to explain. And there are also pressing political concerns that justify a reconsideration of his writings. Global politics is currently marked by a populist wave that decries the very ideas and values that were central to Fine's social theory the need to uphold the rule of law at home and abroad, the politics of cosmopolitan solidarity, and the significance of antisemitism and its relationships with different forms of authoritarian politics. My main argument is that there is a dialectics of universality that drives forward Fine's intellectual project. By this, I mean that a universalistic idea of humanity-an all-inclusive conception of all human beings-is the most important normative intuition of modern times. This idea of humanity moves forward in history through a dual process of emancipation and domination successful forms of social, legal, and political inclusion help make visible previous dynamics of exclusion but may also create or recreate discriminatory practices. This study aims to search for other flaviviruses likely to be associated with GBS. Amino acid (aa) sequence matching analysis was conducted to identify viruses molecularly similar to the Zika virus and human GBS-related proteins. A systematic review of clinical literature was performed to summarize the clinical findings of the GBS-associated flaviviruses identified in the aa sequence matching analysis. It was found that more than 10 pentapeptides were shared between 9 flaviviruses, Zika virus, and human GBS-related proteins. Twenty-six articles totaling 42 clinical cases were eligible for inclusion in the systematic review concerning the nine flaviviruses identified. While some patients showed signs of encephalitis, 5 out of 42 cases demonstrated typical GBS symptoms. Public health professionals should be aware of other GBS-associated flaviviruses and GBS cases with mild symptoms. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.PURPOSE To provide a proof of principle of a Pareto-based method to automatically generate optimal intensity-modulated proton therapy (IMPT) plans for various noncoplanar beam orientations. METHODS A novel multicriteria beam orientation optimization (MCBOO) method was developed to generate Pareto database of optimal plans. The MCBOO method automatically explores the beam orientations and the scalarization parameters of the IMPT plans simultaneously. The MCBOO method is based on multicriteria bilevel optimization (i.e., hierarchical optimization with two nested levels, named the upper and lower level optimization). In MCBOO, the upper level optimization explores the noncoplanar beam orientation space, while the lower level explores the scalarization parameters for a given beam orientation. Differential evolution method was used in both levels, and the Pareto optimal plans were aggregated from the bilevel optimizations to construct the Pareto database. The MCBOO method was implemented on a multinode multi-GPU cluster, and it was tested on three brain tumor patient cases.

We performed a systematic literature review, followed by a retrospective database study using hospital health claims for patients in Japan hospitalized with a diagnosis of mucormycosis between January 2010 and January 2019. Outcomes assessed included duration of index hospitalization; index stay mortality; hospital readmission within 30, 60, and 90 days after index hospitalization discharge; drug/treatment utilization and patterns; number of patients examined for mucormycosis during the index hospitalization; and index stay inpatient costs.

From our database study of 126 patients hospitalized for mucormycosis, mortality during the index hospitalization was 35.7% and mean index stay duration was 94 days. During the index stay, 39 patients (31.0%) received liposomal amphotericin B (L-AMB) treatment and 74 patients (58.7%) received other antifungal treatments. Whittaker's second edition of his A History of the Theories of Aether and Electricity is famous for his treatment of Einstein as an almost irrelevant character in the emergence of what he called "the relativity theory of Poincaré and Lorentz." Historians of science have given a number of explanations, which include Whittaker's scientific conservatism as an old classical physicist, his commitment to the ether, the pre-eminent role he attributed to mathematics over physics, and foundational philosophical disagreements, to name a few. And in the background, often more implicit than forthright, the accusation of antisemitism looms over Whittaker. In this paper I intend to shed new light on this controversy by taking into consideration the abundant correspondence between Whittaker and his son preserved in the archives of the Fisher Library, University of Toronto. With it, we will get a more complex and personal view of the context in which his attempt at dethroning Einstein took place. Together with the abovementioned reasons, this correspondence shows that the problematic status quo of general relativity in the early 1950s, a period that has been described as the low-mark of general relativity, was very influential in the historical treatment he gave to Einstein. This is an aspect hardly mentioned in the historical work on this controversy and, from this correspondence, it appears to be central to understanding Whittaker at the time of drafting the new History. His possible antisemitic bias will also be addressed, though with the insufficient information on this subject the matter cannot be settled.
To investigate alterations in deep retinal vascular complex (DVC) in patients with non-neovascular intermediate AMD (iAMD), treatment-naïve quiescent macular neovascularization (qMNV), exudative AMD (eAMD) by means of OCT angiography (OCTA).

Patients with iAMD, qMNV, eAMD and healthy controls presenting in the Department of Ophthalmology of the Centre Hospitalier Intercommunal de Créteil between January 2016 and January 2018, were retrospectively included. 3 × 3-mm OCTA (AngioVue RTVue XR Avanti) perfusion density (PD) of DVC was computed in all groups at baseline and follow up (12.0 ± 1.1 months).

A total of 46 eyes of 45 patients were enrolled 11/46 iAMD, 10/46 qMNV, 13/46 eAMD, 12/46 control eyes. PD showed a significant decrease during follow-up in qMNV (
 = 0.0059) and iAMD (
 = 0.0076) eyes. PD in eAMD and healthy controls didn't show significant changes.

Herniarin caused a marked reduction in the frequencies of micronucleated polychromatic erythrocytes (MnPCEs) and micronucleated normochromatic erythrocytes (MnNCEs) 24 h after exposure to cisplatin at doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg. Furthermore, herniarin significantly increased the levels of both red and white blood cells in peripheral blood. Treatment of rats with herniarin before cisplatin, significantly decreased the percentage of apoptotic and necrotic cells and the ROS level in bone marrow cells.

RFK Jr. Seeks Justice in Ongoing Libel Suit Against Daily Kos Writer

Lawyers representing Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on Tuesday filed a memorandum in a defamation lawsuit brought against Daily Kos writer David Vickrey. The memo urged the court to deny Vickrey’s motion to dismiss the suit.

Kennedy is the founder and former chairman of Children’s Health Defense (CHD) and President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The lawsuit — filed Oct. 23 in the State of Maine Superior Court — alleges Vickrey made false statements about Kennedy that damaged Kennedy’s reputation, including accusing Kennedy of actions that contributed to the deadly Samoa measles outbreak and wanting to cause the death of Black people.

Last month, Vickrey filed a motion to dismiss the suit. Robert Barnes and Terry Mitrenga, two of Kennedy’s attorneys, in their memo, argued that the court should hear the case.

“A lie is a lie,” they wrote. “Vickrey knowingly published lies about Kennedy intending to harm his reputation. Indeed, Vickrey bragged about it over and over, republishing the lies to the public repeatedly to new audiences for multiple years. Now Vickrey claims to be above the law.”

CHD CEO Mary Holland told The Defender:

“If Mr. Vickrey stands by everything he’s written, let him now tell that to the court — let him prove that what he has said about Kennedy was truthful and without malice. That’s his opportunity now in a court of law. If he can’t meet that bar, I’ll look forward to seeing damages assessed against him.”

Legal battle has dragged on for four years

Tuesday’s filing was the latest move in a four-year saga in which Vickrey has attempted to shut down legal efforts to hold him accountable for libel.

Libel is a method of defamation that exposes a person to public hatred or injures their business or profession, according to the Legal Information Institute at Cornell Law School. Defamation is a statement that injures someone’s reputation.

On Aug. 29, 2020, Daily Kos ran an article, “Anti-Vaxxer RFK JR. joins neo-Nazis in massive Berlin ‘Anti-Corona’ Protest.” Vickrey, who wrote the article, published it under the pseudonym “DowneastDem.”

The article described an Aug. 22, 2020, speech Kennedy delivered to more than 1 million people at the Rally for Peace and Freedom in Berlin organized by the German group Querdenken 711, or “Critical Thinking 711.”

Vickrey wrote, “The protest was organized by right-wing extremist organizations — including the AfD party and various anti-Semitic conspiracy groups as well as the neo-Nazi NPD party.”

The article “falsely tarnished Kennedy by associating him with Nazis, anti-Semites and right-wing extremists as organizers of the demonstration,” said Holland, who also spoke at the demonstration in Berlin.

“None of these claims had any merit, and the defamation affected CHD as Kennedy was acting as our spokesman,” she said.

As The Defender reported, the Querdenken movement is a broad-based, peaceful citizens’ movement for freedom, peace and human rights. It opposes Nazism and anti-semitism. Among the event’s speakers were doctors, lawyers, clergy of every persuasion, soldiers, police officers, parents, children, world-famous athletes, politicians from Germany’s Green Party, human rights activists and leaders of nonprofit organizations.

An attorney representing Kennedy wrote a letter to Daily Kos, asking the online news site to retract the article and explaining that it contained obvious falsehoods. Daily Kos refused.

On Dec. 1, 2020, CHD’s lawyers filed court papers in the Supreme Court of Westchester County, New York, ordering Daily Kos to show why “DowneastDem’s” identity and contact information should not be disclosed.

“Through rigorous sleuthing,” Holland said, “CHD was able to identify ‘DowneastDem’s’ true identity: David Vickrey.”

Since 2020, Vickrey has continued to publish defamatory statements on Daily Kos and Twitter/X.

In 2023, Kennedy sued Vickrey in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Hampshire, thinking that Vickrey had a professional connection to that state. However, upon discovery, it became evident that Vickrey’s work relationships in New Hampshire had ended a decade prior.

In January 2024, a New Hampshire federal judge tossed the suit, Daily Kos reported. U.S. District Judge Steven McAuliffe ruled the case was dead since Vickrey did not write the article in New Hampshire.

Now Kennedy’s lawyers have filed the case in Maine, where Vickrey lives. CHD is providing financial support for the suit.

Kennedy says Vickrey’s statements are untrue

The new suit alleges that Vickrey published statements between May and October 2023 on social media, including Daily Kos and X, that implied or directly made false claims about Kennedy.

The complaint lists multiple false claims, including:

Kennedy helped cause the deadly Samoa measles outbreak.
Kennedy opposed all vaccines.
Kennedy expressed “dangerous vaccine conspiracies” that caused the death of 234,000 Americans.
Kennedy wanted to cause the death of Black people.
Kennedy said COVID-19 was designed to save Jews.
A simple German-to-English translation of a German newspaper reporter’s article said Kennedy knowingly joined, supported and associated with a neo-Nazi party, the National Democratic Party of Germany, in Berlin.
“Each of Vickrey’s factual statements about me are false,” Kennedy stated in his affidavit. “I never had a role in, much less caused, the Samoa Measles Outbreak.”

Kennedy said he has never opposed all vaccines. “I did not cause the death of any Americans, much less 234,000 Americans, by expressing ‘dangerous vaccine conspiracies.’”

He added:

“I never wanted nor caused the death of thousands of African-Americans, Jews, or anyone else. I never said that COVID-19 was designed to save Jews. I never joined any neo-Nazi party group in Germany, at any protest, or in any other manner, at any time, in any way.”

Kennedy said he has spent his “entire career as an advocate for constituencies neglected by institutional power, including important legal victories for minority communities, impoverished constituencies, and advocating for people of every race, religion, and creed, opposing all forms of discriminatory behavior and speaking out against antisemitism and racism.”

“For two decades,” he wrote, “I spoke out in favor of safe and effective vaccines for children, and I support the critical medical doctrine of individual informed consent, relying on principles developed by American jurists in the Nuremberg Code.”

Vickrey claims he was referring to RFK Jr.’s uncle in some of the posts

Meanwhile, Vickrey in his affidavit dismissed allegations that three of his social media posts in question contained false statements about Kennedy. He contended that those posts were about former President John F. Kennedy.

The posts have “nothing whatsoever to do with Plaintiff beyond the fact that it concerns his uncle,” Vickrey wrote.

Another one of the posts was published by another author or content creator, he said.

Vickrey said that in another post he was “encouraging a follower to look into Plaintiff and his positions on vaccines.”

Vickrey did not deny authorship of the Daily Kos posts referenced in the suit, including the article, “Anti-Vaxxer RFK JR. joins neo-Nazis in massive Berlin ‘Anti-Corona’ Protest.”

CHD General Counsel Kim Mack Rosenberg told The Defender that Vickrey is free to have opinions that differ from Kennedy’s — but Vickrey shouldn’t be allowed to spread false information about Kennedy.

Freedom of speech is not the same as libel. “Libel is not afforded constitutional protection,” Mack Rosenberg explained. She said libel can be an “insidious form of censorship” because it spreads false information designed to deter people from considering a speaker’s viewpoint.

“Particularly in the past few years,” Mack Rosenberg said, “censorship and spreading of untruths have gone hand in hand to attempt to silence those who challenge a certain narrative, accusing them of spreading misinformation and disinformation, when in fact, many times it is those seeking to silence them who are spreading falsehoods.”

Lawyers representing Vickrey and Kennedy did not respond by deadline to our request for comment.
