Is the study of history important? How should we approach it - through our present-day morals and standards, or by looking at the values that were held at the time? As a teenager, I took a historical tour that was transformative in shaping my understanding of what it means to be a freedom-loving citizen of our country. The emotional impact of visiting sites of historical significance was profound, and I felt a deep connection to the people who had lived and died there. This experience instilled in me a lifelong passion for celebrating our history and preserving our freedoms.

When I returned to school, I found myself in a US Government class with a teacher who had a very different view of our founding fathers than I did. Instead of being told what to think, however, I was encouraged to hone my critical thinking skills by defending my own views while being exposed to alternative ideas and perspectives. This approach to learning equipped me with the ability to think critically and to approach difficult topics without letting my emotions cloud my judgment.

Unfortunately, some educators today are pushing a narrative that seeks to rewrite history or to grade students based on their conformity to current moral and political values. This is a tragic departure from the true purpose of education, which is to teach us how to think, not what to think.

I believe that everyone should have the opportunity to experience history in an immersive, emotionally engaging way, as I did on my historical tour. By learning about our country's journey in a way that touches our hearts and minds, we can better understand our past and move forward in a way that preserves and protects liberty for generations to come.
