Background The curvature of the anterior corneal surface is traditionally used as a surrogate to estimate corneal astigmatism. In recent years, increasing importance has been attributed to posterior corneal astigmatism as an indicator. Our aim is to characterize the posterior corneal surface in a population with keratoconus and investigate its predictive value to keratoconus progression. Methods Retrospective study from a tertiary care centre (Hospital de Santa Maria, Lisbon, Portugal). Eighty-five patients (85 eyes) with keratoconus were included. All patients had two tomographical examinations ≥12 months apart (Pentacam HR). Vector analysis was used to calculate anterior (ACA), posterior (PCA), and total corneal astigmatism (TCA). Multivariate logistic regression was used to assess the predictive value of PCA to keratoconus progression, adjusting for ACA, TCA and several tomographical indices. Results Study participants had a mean age of 32 (SD = 12.5) years. Mean tomographical keratoconus classification was 2.16 (SD = 0.95), with a mean Kmax of 55.8D (SD = 7.8). Mean power of PCA, ACA and TCA was, respectively, -0.88D (SD = 0.84), 3.74D (SD = 2.36), and 3.06D (SD = 2.01) and its centroids were 0.44D x 15º, 1.65D x 112º, and 1.61D x 106º, respectively. The power of PCA was ≥0.50, 1.00 and 2.00D in 75.3%, 32.9%, and 3.5% of patients, respectively, inducing against-the-rule astigmatism in 60.0% of patients. On average, ACA overestimated TCA in 0.35D x 151º (p less then .01). ACA and TCA were highly correlated but showed a lack of agreement for clinical purposes. A predictive role for PCA was excluded. Conclusions In this population with keratoconus, PCA contributed substantially to TCA. However, PCA was not a valuable predictor for disease progression.Platelet Endothelial Aggregation Receptor 1 (PEAR1) is an orphan receptor of unknown function which mediates powerful activation of platelets and endothelial cells in response to crosslinking by antibodies and sulfated polysaccharides belonging to the dextran and fucoidan families. PEAR1 is a single transmembrane protein composed of 15 epidermal growth factor-like repeat sequences and with a conserved binding motif, YXXM, which when phosphorylated binds to phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K). The 13th of the repeats has a heparin-binding sequence that is the site of interaction with the sulfated fucoidans and the only known endogenous ligand FcεRIα. Crosslinking of PEAR1 drives Src family kinase phosphorylation of the cytosolic tail leading to binding and activation of PI3K. In this Opinion Article, we summarize the literature on PEAR1 expression, structure and signaling, and the search for further endogenous ligands. We highlight one article in which phosphorylation of a 150 kDa platelet protein by heparin-containing ligands has been reported and propose that PEAR1 is a receptor for one or more glycosaminoglycan-conjugated proteins (proteoglycans). The up-regulation of PEAR1 at sites of inflammation in the vasculature and its role in angiogenesis suggests a role in the interplay of inflammation, platelets, coagulation, and thromboinflammation. We speculate that this may explain the link between single nucleotide variants in PEAR1 and cardiovascular disease.Despite the growing interest from researchers' in recent years, stalking is a phenomenon of difficult operationalization within the scientific community. Examining the phenomenon in criminal justice professionals has become relevant since the work context is considered a fertile environment for the presence of stalking, despite underreported. This study aims specifically to know the prevalence, nature, dynamics, impact, and help-seeking behaviors (and its perceived effectiveness) of stalking victimization by criminal justice professionals stalked in Portugal. We were also interested in the professionals' perceptions of why they were stalked. The data were collected through a web-based survey, after the approval of the ethic committee. The sample was composed of 270 criminal justice professionals, mostly men (59.3%), with a mean age of 42.70 (SD = 9.07) years. The results showed that 24.8% reported having been stalked at least once in their lifetime. Stalking prevalence was higher in women compared to men. Concerning the profession, the highest prevalence was verified in the group of professionals composed of lawyers, jurists, court officials, and auditors, followed by the group of magistrates, and finally the judges and the criminal police. More diversity of stalking behaviors experienced was associated with a higher frequency of those behaviors. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/semaxanib-su5416.html Psychological health (70.7%) and lifestyle/behavioral changes (62.1%) were the most reported areas of impact. Being stalked in a private context (e.g., intimate relationships), for a longer period and feeling a higher level of fear as a result of the stalking campaign were associated with more impact. Most of the victims (74.6%) revealed having sought help to cope with the stalking experience, with women seeking more help than men (88.6% vs. 59.4%). For bringing evidence that criminal justice professionals are at risk of being stalked, these findings can contribute to the adoption of policies and strategies to prevent stalking victimization among this population.
To validate the Lithuanian version of the Self-Evaluation Negative Symptoms Scale (Lith-SNS).

A double translation from French to Lithuanian and back was performed. We included patients from in-patient and out-patient settings that had a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia according to ICD-10 criteria and were screened as free from acute psychotic symptoms using the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI). Participants were evaluated using the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BRPS) and completed the Lith-SNS scale. We measured internal consistency, convergent validity, and discriminant validity of Lith - SNS comparing its scores with BPRS negative and positive symptom subscores.

A total of 67 participants were evaluated. Cronbach's alpha (α) for all 20 items of Lith-SNS (α = 0.82), and for the five subscores (α = 0.76) showed good internal consistency. Factor analysis showed a 2-factor solution which accounted for 70.12% of the variance with the first factor accounting for 53.3% and the second factor accounting for 16.
