Reciprocity is a fundamental mechanism for sustained social relationships. Escalation-based theories suggest that reciprocity intensifies over time. In contrast, equity-based theories propose that people reciprocate behaviors in kind. We reconcile these conflicting perspectives by examining social exchanges across different cultural contexts. Using three complementary experiments, we investigate when, how, and why individuals in East Asian settings and those in North American settings differentially reciprocate positive versus negative behaviors over time. Study 1 demonstrated that in positively framed exchanges (i.e., giving) Americans escalated their reciprocity, but Singaporeans reciprocated in kind. However, in negatively framed exchanges (i.e., taking), Singaporeans escalated their reciprocity, but Americans reciprocated in kind. Study 2 replicated the results using Hong Kongers and showed that cultural differences in regulatory focus were associated with specific emotions (i.e., anxiety and happiness), which then escalated reciprocity. To establish causality, Study 3 manipulated regulatory focus within one culture and replicated the pattern of results.The first year represents an exceptional time of development during which important social skills emerge, like action and emotion understanding. However, to date, no study explored the neural underpinnings of infants' ability to bind emotion- to action-related information. To assess this issue, we measured EEG activity while 6-month-old infants observed the same action performed by an actress displaying three different emotional expressions (happiness, anger and neutral). Results have shown that actions embedded in an emotional context (happiness and anger) elicited larger early negativity at parieto-occipital sites compared to a neutral context. Technique Arterial cannulas are inserted percutaneously in the right axillary artery (12-F) and left common carotid artery (LCCA; 10-F) to provide normothermic antegrade cerebral perfusion during TEVAR with neuromonitoring. Inferior vena cava blood is drawn using a 19-F femoral cannula, filtered, oxygenated, and delivered through independent roller pumps to the arterial cannulas. Static CEP is obtained by balloon occlusion of the 3 aortic arch branches proximally, resulting in complete separation of aortic and cerebral blood flow; static CEP is used during aortic endograft delivery and deployment. Dynamic CEP, obtained by creating flow reversal in the innominate artery and proximal LCCA, is used at all other times. Successful use of this CEP technique is illustrated in a patient with shaggy aorta undergoing fenestrated total arch TEVAR. The purpose of this study was to test the utility of Goldstein's tripartite conceptual framework among rural incarcerated women, by examining whether distinct drugs/violence nexus groups could be classified based on psychopharmacological, economic-compulsive, and systemic factors. This study used secondary data from a National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)-funded grant focused on risk reduction among high-risk incarcerated women in Appalachia (N = 400). Predicted drugs/violence groups were developed using a series of discriminant function analyses. The data yielded three statistically significant discriminant models. Findings of the classified groupings indicated support for three distinct drugs/violence victimization subgroups.
