Although virtual reality VR is shown to have short-term analgesic effects in acute pain settings, its long-term efficacy with chronic pain conditions has not been established. This scoping review aims to provide a summary of VR approaches explored in chronic primary and secondary pain conditions as defined by the International Association for the Study of Pain.
A systematic literature search in Ovid PubMed and Ovid Embase was conducted between January 5-10th 2021 using the Arksey and O'Malley six-step scoping review criteria. Articles were searched using search terms and keywords relating to ICD-defined primary and secondary chronic pain conditions, virtual reality, virtual illusion, distraction and effects on levels of pain.
Of 2118 articles located, 44 were included covering a range of primary and secondary chronic pain conditions, using a variety of different computer screen and headset protocols including gaming, mindfulness, exercise, relaxation and proprioceptive skills.
Studies show virtual reality to be an effective analgesic intervention for people with chronic pain. Given user satisfaction and lack of side effects such as cybersickness and relief of comorbid symptoms, VR has the potential as a worthwhile adjunct to chronic pain management programmes, thus enabling patients to take control of their symptoms.

Systemic sclerosis is a complex connective tissue disease affecting mental and physical health. Fatigue, hand function loss, and Raynaud's phenomenon are the most prevalent disease-specific symptoms of systemic sclerosis. This study aimed to develop consensus and evidence-based recommendations for non-pharmacological treatment of these symptoms.
A multidisciplinary task force was installed comprising 20 Dutch experts. After agreeing on the method for formulating the recommendations, clinically relevant questions about patient education and treatments were inventoried. During a face-to-face task force meeting, draft recommendations were generated through a systematically structured discussion, following the nominal group technique. To support the recommendations, an extensive literature search was conducted in MEDLINE and six other databases until September 2020, and 20 key systematic reviews, randomized controlled trials, and published recommendations were selected. A number of studies have concluded that laboratory-reared B. germanica self-select diets with an approximate 1P3C (protein-to-carbohydrate) ratio. We predicted that field-collected insects would exhibit more variable dietary preferences, related to the wide-ranging quality, quantity, and patchiness of foods available to them. Significant differences between populations in various apartments as well as between populations maintained in the laboratory suggested that factors beyond temporary food scarcity influence diet choice. Nevertheless, we found significant correlations between the amounts of diets ingested by cockroaches in apartments and cockroaches from the same populations assayed in the laboratory, as well as between males, females, and nymphs from these populations. These findings suggest that females, males, and nymphs within apartments adapt to the local conditions and convergently prefer similar amounts of food of similar dietary protein content.
Tumor-specific metabolic processes essential for cell survival are promising targets to potentially circumvent intratumoral heterogeneity, a major resistance factor in gliomas. Tumor cells preferentially using nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase (NAMPT), the rate-limiting enzyme in the salvage pathway for synthesis of NAD, a critical cofactor for diverse biological processes including cellular redox reactions, energy metabolism and biosynthesis. NAMPT is overexpressed in most malignancies, including gliomas, and can serve as a tumor-specific target.

We blueprint a holistic DP solution at a large academic medical center ubiquitously integrated into clinical workflows; researchapplications including molecular, genetic, and tissue databases; and educational processes.
We built a vendor-agnostic, integrated viewer for reviewing, annotating, sharing, and quality assurance of digital slides in a clinical or research context. It is the first homegrown viewer cleared by New York State provisional approval in 2020 for primary diagnosis and remote sign-out during the COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) pandemic. We further introduce an interconnected Honest Broker for BioInformatics Technology (HoBBIT) to systematically compile and share large-scale DP research datasets including anonymized images, redacted pathology reports, and clinical data of patients with consent.
