Path of Exile Item Upgrades

Upgrades to items are a common and crucial method to enhance the performance of a variety of items in Path of Exile. They can also provide additional damage, AD or even affixes.

In most cases, however, upgraded Common and Magic gear is outclassed by Rare-grade equipment due to their requirements.

Armor

Armor upgrades are a type of upgrade that can be applied to weapons and armor items. They increase the stats of whatever item they are connected to. Armor upgrades can be found in the world of games and purchased from Blacksmiths on bonfires. The amount of damage an armored piece or weapon is able to absorb is dependent on the level of its upgrades. There are a few different types of armor upgrades available in the game, and they all have distinct effects. Certain upgrades grant armor an additional amount of health points while others make it lighter and more powerful. Some of the upgrades also require magic or a combination of technology and magic, as indicated by the "Magic" and "Hybrids" entries in the table. Certain upgrades also require fees to use. The Jeweler is able to create all tiers of gems, apart from the rare and legendary ones, which you must be at an appropriate level to obtain. Unlike other upgrade components, jewels are able to be swapped by a different identical jewel without destroying the original one. You are able to replace the jewel once in an item of equipment.

It is normal to use more gems for aesthetic reasons. The jewels also improve performance and create a harder surface than steel so that repeated friction caused by pivots does not damage them.

A Glyphmaster can provide glyphs to enhance the appearance of your weapons and shields. These are a small perk and can be swapped out at any time, but are not guaranteed to drop as loot. Glyphs can be upgraded, like jewelry, at the Jeweler for gold, and also a scattered Crystal. Glyphs can also be taken out from the inventory, and they are returned to the inventory. Trinkets

Trinkets can provide your hero with many small, but useful, benefits. They can be acquired starting in the areas of starting as loot or personal story rewards from vendors, or by doing road interactions. They may also be crafted by jewelers, and found or purchased on the Trading Post.

The first trinket a player can unlock is the cloak. It grants a small but beneficial boost in speed of movement and evasion. The player can then acquire rings, amulets and necklaces in a similar fashion similar to how they obtained weapons and armor. Every piece of equipment has a slot for an upgrade that is either universal or jewel. Universal upgrades provide smaller bonuses and can be put into any type of equipment, while jewelry cannot be changed or upgraded and only works with certain types of trinkets.

These trinkets grant additional buffs and abilities that are active even when the hero isn't engaged in combat. This lets the hero be more effective when not active, and can also help to compensate for the absence of a strong team or the absence of any slots in the talent tree that would normally be filled with the hero's best stats.

As a general rule, trinket upgrades should prioritize BiS (Best in Slot) items that you aren't likely to replace anytime soon. Next, any items that have desirable statistics aren't as important as the iLevel of the item to be upgraded. This is particularly true if an item has multiple stats you'd like to upgrade as it's usually better to upgrade a single important stat rather than two sub-optimal ones.
