As coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic continues, an increasing number of countries and territories are adopting restrictive measures based on physical ("social") distancing, aimed at preventing human-to-human transmission and thereby limiting virus propagation. Nationwide lockdowns, encompassing mass quarantine under stay-at-home ordinances, have already been proven effective to contain the COVID-19 outbreak in some countries. Nevertheless, a prolonged homestay may also be associated with potential side effects, which may jeopardize people's health and thus must be recognized and mitigated in a way without violating local ordinances. Some of the most important undesirable consequences of prolonged homestay such as physical inactivity, weight gain, behavioral addiction disorders, insufficient sunlight exposure and social isolation will be critically addressed in this article, which also aims to provide some tentative recommendations for the alleviation of side effects.Background All general biochemistry instruments allow the measure of hemolysis index (HI), and suppliers provide an acceptable HI for each assay without consideration of the analyte value or its clinical application. Our first objective was to measure the impact of hemolysis degree on plasma biochemical and immunochemical analytes to determine the maximum allowable HI for each of them using four calculation methods as significant bias in comparison to manufacturer's data. Analytes were assessed at one (3 analytes), two (5 analytes) and three (12 analytes) values according to their sensitivity to hemolysis and their clinical impact. We used four calculation methods as significant limit from baseline value the total change limit (TCL), the 10% change (10%Δ), the analytical change limit and the reference change value. Results Allowable HI was significantly different according to the threshold chosen for most analytes and was also dependent on the analyte value for alkaline phosphatase, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, creatine kinase, iron, haptoglobin and high sensitivity troponin T. No hemolysis interference was observed for albumin, creatinine, C-reactive protein, and procalcitonin even at an HI value of 11 g/L. Conclusions This study highlights that TCL is the most appropriate calculation method to determine allowable HI in practice for biochemical and immunochemical parameters using Cobas 8000© from Roche Diagnostics. In addition, different allowable HI were found according to analyte value leading to optimization of resampling to save time in patient care.BACKGROUND There is a paucity of subnational data on patterns of mobile phone ownership and use in Tanzania to inform the development of digital health interventions. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study is to assess patterns of mobile phone ownership and use in pregnant women to inform the feasibility and design of digital health interventions for promoting timely uptake of childhood vaccines in southern Tanzania. METHODS Between August and November 2017, pregnant women in their third trimester were enrolled at health facilities and from surrounding communities, and asked about their patterns of mobile phone ownership and use in an interviewer administered survey. RESULTS Of 406 women, only 3 had never used a phone. Most women (>98%) could make and receive phone calls. Compared to urban women, rural women reported higher mobile phone use rates but were less likely to be sole owners of phones, and less likely to send or receive SMS, transact money, browse the internet, or use social media via mobile phones. CONCLUSIONS The findings suggest high feasibility for digital health interventions delivered via mobile phones to pregnant women in southern Tanzania. Human factors questionnaires, such as the Safety Attitudes Questionnaire (SAQ), can help us understand medical teamwork and may assist in achieving this goal. OBJECTIVE This paper aimed to assess local team and safety culture in a cardiovascular surgery setting to understand how purposeful teamwork improvements can be reached. METHODS Two cardiovascular surgical teams performing complex aortic treatments were assessed an endovascular-treatment team (ETT) and an open-treatment team (OTT). Both teams answered an online version of the SAQ Dutch Edition (SAQ-NL) consisting of 30 questions related to six different domains of safety teamwork climate, safety climate, job satisfaction, stress recognition, perceptions of management, and working conditions. In addition, one open-ended question was posed to gain more insight into the completed questionnaires. RESULTS The SAQ-NL was completed by all 23 ETT members and all 13 OTT members.
