In soil and plant tissues, the concentrations and reserves of manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), and lead (Pb) were calculated to measure the heavy metal quantities of the Scots pine afforestation. In the soil and plant tissues, heavy metal concentrations varied. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/icg-001.html The highest concentration of heavy metal was found in Mn and the lowest concentration in Pb in the soil. Heavy metal stocks followed the order of Mn > Zn > Ni > Cu > Pb in soil, and the order of Zn > Cu > Mn > Ni > Pb in the plant. In the Scots pine parts, Pb and Zn concentrations and BCFs follow Needle > Branch > Bark > Root > Trunk order, while Cu concentrations follow Root > Needle > Branch > Bark > Trunk order, Mn concentrations follow Needle > Branch > Bark > Trunk > Root order and Ni concentrations follow Needle > Branch > Root > Bark > Trunk order. In particular, Scots pine needles are considered to be ideal to be used as biomonitoring plants, especially in monitoring increases in heavy metal concentrations in urban areas. Besides, in order to be more effective in the retaining of heavy metals, it is proposed that mixtures of hyperaccumulator plants be added which are appropriate for climatic conditions. This study aimed to analyze the cold stress effects (in terms of hematology, energy reserves, and oxidative stress) in Piaractus mesopotamicus (pacú) and their mitigation by a Pyropia columbina red seaweed-supplemented diet. For this purpose, juvenile fish were fed with a control (CD) or a red seaweed-supplemented diet (RD) for 60 days, and then, the animals were exposed to a low temperature (14 °C) and a control temperature (24 °C) for 24 h. link2 The cold shock generated an increase of hemoglobin levels in fish fed with both diets. In CD-fed fish, plasmatic triglycerides, cholesterol, and hepatic glycogen decreased after the thermal shock; meanwhile, the animals fed with RD showed decreased hepatic proteins, but increased cholesterol and hepatic glycogen. Regarding oxidative stress, antioxidant enzymes augmented their activity in the liver, intestine, and gills; meanwhile, lipid oxidative damage was observed in the liver and intestine of fish exposed to 14 °C and fed with both diets. link3 Pacú was sensitive to cold shock, but no mitigation effects were observed in fish fed with the supplemented diet. Further research should target higher concentrations of P. columbina in supplemented diets to take advantage of this valuable resource. It is long known that inbreeding increases the detrimental effects of recessive sequence variants in "Runs of Homozygosity" (ROHs). However, although the phenotypic association of ROH has been investigated for a variety of traits, the statistical power of the results often remains limited as a sufficiently high number of cases are available for only a restricted number of traits. In the present study, we aim to analyze the association of runs of homozygosity with the trait "in-group ethnic favoritism". This analysis assumes that if ethnic identity is important for an individual, that individual may tend to marry more frequently within their own group and therefore ROH are expected to increase. We hypothesize that an attitude preferring one's own ethnic group may be associated with a stronger tendency of inbreeding and, as a result, with more and longer ROHs. Accordingly, we investigated the association between the attitude to someone's own ethnicity and ROH, using the Wisconsin Longitudinal data (WLS, total N ~ 9000) as discovery data set and the Brisbane Twin data as replication data set (N ~ 8000). We find that both the number as well as the total length of homozygous segments are significantly positively associated with "in-group ethnic favoritism", independent of the method used for ROH calculation. In the present observational cohort study in 4902 men and 9804 women, we found that the factors associated with osteoporosis care utilization in men were comorbidities, adjuvant hormonal therapy for prostate cancer, vertebral or hip fractures, and glucocorticoid treatment.
Male osteoporosis is associated with an important clinical and economic burden worldwide; nevertheless, undertreatment of men with osteoporosis is common. Understanding the factors associated with referral to bone specialists may help to define future interventions to improve access to osteoporosis care for male patients.
We conducted a retrospective analysis of a nationwide cohort (DeFRACalc79 database). DeFRACalc79 is a tool that estimates the fracture risk by considering clinical and densitometric risk factors, including the presence of prior hip or vertebral and non-vertebral or non-hip fractures. We compared the clinical characteristics of male individuals with an age-matched cohort of women. Propensity score generation with a 21 feor the primary prevention of osteoporosis in men as compared with that in women.
In this study, we investigated the diagnostic efficacy of 2D-Shear Wave Elastography (2D-SWE) in detecting stages of liver fibrosis and determining the disease-specific cut-off values in patients with chronic hepatitis B and C infection, using histopathological analysis as the reference method.
Our study included 103 consecutive adult patients with chronic hepatitis B and C infection (CHB and CHC) who had liver biopsy within three months of elastography examination. A real-time 2D-SWE was performed using the LOGIQ E9 system (GE Medical Systems, Wisconsin, USA). The correlation between the liver stiffness measurements and the METAVIR scores was evaluated. The diagnostic performance of 2D-SWE was assessed, and cut-off values were set.
We found a statistically significant positive correlation between elastography values and the degree of liver fibrosis (Spearman's correlation coefficient = 0.76 and 0.83 for CHB and CHC; respectively) (p = 0.0001). The stiffness cut-off values were F ≥ 1 5.92kPa, F ≥ 2 7.69kPa, F ≥ 3 8.97kPa, F ≥ 4 12.15kPa in CHB; and F ≥ 1 6.09kPa, F ≥ 2 7.81kPa, F ≥ 3 9.0kPa, F ≥ 4 12.47kPa in CHC patients.
2D-SWE is reliable and accurate for the diagnosis of liver fibrosis. In selected patients, 2D-SWE may be useful in reducing the need for liver biopsy when staging fibrosis. Further studies in larger prospective series are needed to confirm these results and determine the most appropriate cut-off values for each stage of liver fibrosis.

Fatigue and pain are common among women with breast cancer, and often related to depressive symptoms. Social support may influence levels of fatigue, pain interference, and depressive symptoms. We tested a theory-based, structural model examining the relationship between social support (i.e., emotional and instrumental) and depressive symptoms via fatigue and pain interference in women with breast cancer.
Women (N = 327) with stages I-III breast cancer were enrolled in a randomized trial investigating a behavioral pain intervention. Measures of social support, fatigue, pain interference, and depressive symptoms were completed at enrollment. Data were analyzed using structural equation modeling to test direct and indirect pathways relating social support, fatigue, pain interference, and depressive symptoms.
Our model evidenced good fit. Significant direct effects emerged linking higher levels of emotional support with lower levels of fatigue (β = -.30), pain interference (β = -.32), and depressive symptohways that healthcare professionals can leverage to optimize social support topics in psychosocial interventions targeting breast cancer symptoms. This model should be replicated using longitudinal data.Associations between poor sleep and pain may be amplified for children who also have depressive or anxious symptoms. This study examined associations between child sleep at eight years and recurrent pain at nine years along with the moderating role of internalizing symptoms. Families were from a community-based, ongoing longitudinal study (N = 632 children). At eight and nine years, twins (49.2% female, 56.7% non-Latinx European American, 28.8% Latinx) and caregivers participated in assessments focused on child sleep and pain, respectively. Approximately 53% of children had pain in at least one location at least monthly. Internalizing symptoms at age eight were positively associated with number of pain sites at age nine. Lower sleep efficiencies were associated with more pain sites for children with higher levels of internalizing symptoms. Later midpoint times were associated with more pain sites for children with lower levels of internalizing symptoms. Interventions focused on improving children's pain outcomes may consider targeting sleep behaviors and mental health.Optimism is known to buffer against negative mood. Thus, understanding the factors that contribute to individual variation in optimism may inform interventions for mood disorders. Preliminary evidence suggests that the generation of mental imagery-based representations of positive relative to negative future scenarios is related to optimism. This study investigated the hypothesis that an elevated tendency to generate positive relative to negative mental imagery during spontaneous future thinking would be associated with reduced negative mood via its relationship to higher optimism. Participants (N = 44) with varied levels of naturally occurring negative mood reported current levels of optimism and the real-time occurrence and characteristics of spontaneous thoughts during a sustained attention computer task. Consistent with hypotheses, higher optimism statistically mediated the relationship between a higher proportional frequency of positive relative to negative mental imagery during spontaneous future thinking and lower negative mood. Further, the relationship between emotional mental imagery and optimism was found for future, but not past, thinking, nor for verbal future or past thinking. Thus, a greater tendency to generate positive rather than negative imagery-based mental representations when spontaneously thinking about the future may influence how optimistic one feels, which in turn may influence one's experience of negative mood.
Children born with unilateral renal agenesis (URA) are thought to have a risk of developing hypertension, proteinuria, and progressive chronic kidney disease (CKD). The present study aimed to evaluate the long-term prognosis and clinical characteristics of children with URA.
The study included 171 patients aged < 18 years diagnosed as URA who were followed-up for ≥ 1 year and 121 healthy controls matched for age, gender, and BMI.
Median age at diagnosis was 2 years (IQR 1 month-16 years) and the incidence of URA in males (65.4%) was higher than in females. Among the patients, 21 (12.2%) had other urinary system anomalies. It was noted that 2.3% of the patients had proteinuria, 15.2% had hyperfiltration, and 2.9% had CKD. Hypertension based on ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) was diagnosed in 18 (10.5%) of the patients, of whom 10 had masked hypertension. Diastolic blood pressure in the URA patients was significantly higher than in the healthy controls. The incidence of hypertension and CKD was significantly higher in the patients with other urinary system anomalies.
