Compassion meditation (CM) training has demonstrated potential in improving well-being and psychosocial functioning. However, most prior studies of CM training have focused on younger adults. The generalizability of the effectiveness of CM training with older adults requires further study. This pilot study was intended to inform future randomized controlled studies of CM training in older adults.

Participants included 24 older adults who attended a 10-week group CM training. Exploratory outcome measures were administered prior to, during, and after the intervention. Participants also completed logs of mood and meditation practice, and provided descriptive comments in response to open-ended questions administered at the end of treatment.

High treatment completion rates (87.5%) and reported adherence (85.7% of assigned meditation) were observed. Descriptive feedback from participants indicated older adults are interested in and capable of learning and applying new concepts and skills in support of their well-being. Pre- to post-intervention changes were explored with a variety of self-report measures. Weekly journals suggested increased feelings of love, closeness, or trust, and decreased feelings of stress, nervousness, or being overwhelmed.

These findings provide preliminary support for the feasibility of CM training in community-dwelling older adults, and suggest the need for future efficacy and effectiveness clinical trials.

The long-term effect of childhood tonsillectomy on JCV status in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients has not been investigated. In this retrospective case-control study, we analyzed data of 144 JCV seropositive cases and 82 JCV seronegative controls from three outpatient MS clinics in the United States. Early tonsillectomy (before the age of 8) was reported among 8 (5.56%) JCV seropositive subjects and 19 (23.17%) controls. Early tonsillectomy was associated with JCV negative status (adjusted odds ratio = 5.39, 95% confidence interval = 2.13-13.62, p  less then  0.001) independent of age and gender.Shiga toxin (Stx)-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) can cause a wide range of symptoms from asymptomatic carriage, mild diarrhea to bloody diarrhea (BD) and hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). Intimin, encoded by the eae gene, also plays a critical role in STEC pathogenesis. Herein, we investigated the prevalence and genetic diversity of eae among clinical STEC isolates from patients with diarrhea, BD, HUS as well as from asymptomatic STEC-positive individuals in Sweden with whole-genome sequencing. We found that 173 out of 239 (72.4%) of clinical STEC strains were eae positive. Six eae subtypes (ϵ1, γ1, β3, θ, ζ and ρ) were identified eae and its subtype γ1 were significantly overrepresented in O157H7 strains isolated from BD and HUS patients. ϵ1 was associated with O121H19 and O103H2 strains, and β3 to O26H11 strains. The combination of eae subtype γ1 and stx subtype (stx2 or stx1+stx2) is more likely to cause severe disease, suggesting the possibility of using eae genotypes in risk assessment of STEC infection. Considering the urgent need of the drug for fighting against this infectious disease, we have performed in-silico drug repurposing followed by molecular dynamics (MD) simulation and MM-GBSA calculation. The main protease (Mpro) is one of the best-characterized drug targets among coronaviruses, therefore, this was screened for already known FDA approved drugs and some natural compounds. Comparison of docking and MD simulation results of complexes of drugs with that of inhibitor N3 (experimentally obtained) suggests EGCG, withaferin, dolutegravir, artesunate as potential inhibitors of the main protease (Mpro). Further, in silico docking and MD simulation suggest that EGCG analogues ZINC21992196 and ZINC 169337541 may act as a better inhibitor. Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.
