The current study compared the dynamics of the immunopathogenesis of Ad14 and Ad14p1 infection of hamster lungs through the first two weeks after infection. Little difference was seen in infection-induced inflammation at day 1. Beginning at day 3, Ad14p1-infected hamsters showed marked inflammation that continued through to day 7. The inflammation began to resolve by day 10 but was still detectable at day 14. In contrast, Ad14-infected hamsters showed little inflammation during the 14-day period of observation. Inflammatory cell type analysis revealed that, at day 1, hamsters infected with either virus had predominantly neutrophil infiltration that began to resolve by day 3. However, at day 5, Ad14p1-infected hamsters had a second wave of neutrophil infiltration that was accompanied by edema which persisted to a variable extent through to day 10. These differences were not explained by an increased Ad14p1 replication rate, compared with Ad14 in vitro, but there was prolonged persistence of Ad14p1 in hamster lungs. As symbiotic gastrodermal cells (SGCs) are the key cells in a symbiotic relationship, obtaining SGCs and studying their functions represent an urgent need. The majority of the cells dissociated from octocoral tissues consist of host cells and algal cells, and very few intact SGCs can be observed. To solve this problem, we developed a new method to collect large amounts of SGCs from octocorals. We incubated the tissue of Sinularia flexibilis in high-salinity (60‱) filtered seawater for 6 h and were able to collect more than 18 times the number of SGCs from the control group. To test the quality of the dissociated cells, we performed three assays to evaluate their cell viability. All three assays demonstrated that cell viability was good after incubating in a high-salinity solution. We also used two other octocorals, Paralemnalia thyrsoides and Sinularia compressa, to perform the same experiment, and the results were similar to those for Sinularia flexibilis. Therefore, a high-salinity-induced increase in the SGC ratio is a common phenomenon among octocorals. For this reason, the essential oil isolated from leaves and shoots of Drimys winteri (J.R. Forster & G. Forster)-also named canelo (CEO)-was investigated for its chemical profile and insecticidal action against Acanthoscelides obtectus (Say)-one of the most important post-harvest pests of dry beans in the world-and Aegorhinus superciliosus (Guérin)-a significant pest of fruit trees in Chile. The analysis by gas chromatography, paired with mass spectrometry (GC/MS) determined 56 compounds, corresponding to 92.28% of the detected compounds. Elemol (13.54%), γ-eudesmol (11.42%), β-eudesmol (8.49%), α-eudesmol (6.39%), α-pinene (7.92%) and β-pinene (5.17%) were the most abundant. Regarding the bioactivity of the CEO, the results demonstrated toxicological effects against A. obtectus. A concentration of 158.3 µL L-1 had a mortality rate of 94% after 24 h exposure. The LC50 and LC90 values at 24 h were 60.1 and 163.0 µL L-1. Moreover, behavioral bioassays showed a repellent effect against A. superciliosus with a dose of one microliter of CEO. Both sexes of the raspberry weevil stayed for very short times in the treated area with the oil ( less then 0.8 min), showing a homogeneous repellency in the species. The overall data suggest that canelo leaves and shoots essential oil has an insecticide effect and is worth exploring to better understand the synergistic relationship between the compounds present in the essential oil.The goal of this study is to understand and mitigate the effects of wounds on acute radiation syndrome (ARS) and delayed effects of acute radiation exposure (DEARE), for preparedness against a radiological attack or accident. Combined injuries from concomitant trauma and radiation are likely in these scenarios. Either exacerbation or mitigation of radiation damage by wound trauma has been previously reported in preclinical studies. Female WAG/RijCmcr rats received 13 Gy X-rays, with partial-body shielding of one leg. Within 2 h, irradiated rats and non-irradiated controls were given full-thickness skin wounds with or without lisinopril, started orally 7 days after irradiation. Morbidity, skin wound area, breathing interval and blood urea nitrogen were measured up to 160 days post-irradiation to independently evaluate wound trauma and DEARE. Wounding exacerbated morbidity in irradiated rats between 5 and 14 days post-irradiation (during the ARS phase), and irradiation delayed wound healing. Wounding did not alter delayed morbidities from radiation pneumonitis or nephropathy after 30 days post-irradiation.
