Conjunctivitis, one of the most common ocular surface diseases, can be caused by many contributors. However, the important role of air pollution has been inadequately evaluated, particularly in countries with poor air quality. A total of 43,462 conjunctivitis patients from January 1, 2014 to December 31, 2018 were identified from the Department of Ophthalmology of The Second Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University, Hefei, China. Such data were linked to the daily mean concentration of NO

exposure and the risk of outpatient visits for conjunctivitis. Stratified analyses were also performed on the basis of gender, age group and season.

From the perspective of public health, the climate crisis is also causing many health problems worldwide. In contrast with the cardiovascular, respiratory, and urinary system, the adverse effects of heatwaves on the endocrine system, particularly in people with diabetes mellitus (DM), are not well established to date. In this study, the author investigated the morbidity and mortality changes of DM patients during heatwave periods, using the meta-analysis method.
The author searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library until March 12, 2020. The quality of each included study was assessed using the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Quality Assessment tools. The meta-analysis was conducted using the studies with a relative risk (RR) estimate and odds ratio (OR) estimate. The subgroup analysis and the meta-ANOVA analysis were conducted using various covariates, including lag days considered.
Only 36 articles were included in the meta-analysis. The pooled RR of mortality and of morbidity for diabeticses patients under the heatwave were mildly increased by about 18 percent for mortality and 10 percent for overall morbidity. The mortality risk of diabetics can increase more when lag days of 10 days or more are considered than when lag days of less than 10 days are considered. These valuable findings can be used in developing public health strategies to cope with heatwaves in the current era of aggravating global warming and climate crisis.Proliferation and differentiation of vocal fold epithelial cells during embryonic development is poorly understood. We examined the role of Hippo signaling, a vital pathway known for regulating organ size, in murine laryngeal development. Conditional inactivation of the Hippo kinase genes Lats1 and Lats2, specifically in vocal fold epithelial cells, resulted in severe morphogenetic defects. Deletion of Lats1 and Lats2 caused abnormalities in epithelial differentiation, epithelial lamina separation, cellular adhesion, basement membrane organization with secondary failed cartilage, and laryngeal muscle development. Further, Lats1 and Lats2 inactivation led to failure in differentiation of p63+ basal progenitors. Our results reveal novel roles of Hippo-Lats-YAP signaling in proper regulation of VF epithelial fate and larynx morphogenesis.The venom color variation of Crotalus durissus terrificus (Cdt) is attributed to the presence of the toxin L-amino acid oxidase (LAAO). During the venom milking routine of Instituto Butantan, we have noticed that most venoms of captive Cdt specimens show a yellowish color, while most venoms of wild specimens are white. Here we describe a comparative analysis of long-term captive (LTC) and recently wild-caught (RWC) Cdt, focusing on LAAO variation. For the identification of LAAO in individual venoms, four different approaches were employed evaluation of the enzymatic activity, SDS-PAGE, Western blotting, and ELISA. In addition, mass spectrometry analysis was performed using pooled samples. Although some variation among these methodologies was observed, it was possible to notice that the presence of LAAO was significantly higher in the venom of LTC individuals. LAAO was identified in 60-80% LTC specimens and in only 10-12% of RWC specimens. Furthermore, this enzyme accounts for 5.6% of total venom proteins of LTC Cdt pooled venom, while it corresponds to only 0.7% of RWC Cdt pooled venom. These findings strongly suggest that captive maintenance increases the expression of LAAO in Cdt venom.Deoxynivalenol (DON) commonly infects agricultural foods; it exhibits toxicity by inducing oxidative stress and inhibiting protein synthesis. Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF2) regulates the cellular antioxidant response. We investigated the cytotoxicity of DON and its effect on the NRF2 antioxidant response in HepG2 cells. DON decreased cell viability, GSH concentrations and ATP levels and increased lipid peroxidation and membrane damage. DON significantly decreased total NRF2 and increased p-NRF2 and downregulated the transcription and translation of NRF2 target antioxidant enzymes. Further, expression of the mitochondrial stress response protein, Sirt3 was significantly decreased. In conclusion, DON induced oxidative stress and downregulated NRF2-induced cytoprotection by suppressing the antioxidant signalling mechanism in HepG2 cells.
