The Band Toto Asia

Toto was expanding its production facilities abroad, and doing business in France and Germany, Indonesia, Korea and Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. Origins

You might expect a band with a name like Asia to be a prog band however it's actually a pretty straightforward rock band. The band started out as a group and released two albums - 1979's self-titled debut and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the group in the after he was charged with drug abuse. the group continued to perform as a trio featuring Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.

Toto released Isolation despite the turbulence. It wasn't as well-liked as IV. However, the group managed to release another chart-topping album in 1992 with Kingdom of Desire. This album marked the end of Toto's lineup and the debut of Simon Phillips, a new vocalist.

Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album is a return to a classic sextet format and it was a more consistent, more powerful effort that had a more grittier edge. The more edgy sound of the album was indicative of the maturation of group and included drummer Bobby Kimball's greater proficiency on the drums, as well as an improved, mature vocal delivery from singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's keyboard skills were as well more refined, more precise and less akin to previous efforts.

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth record, Old Is New was an uncommercial success and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis, which restricted his singing capabilities. In addition, Hungate returned to Nashville as a drummer, and Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.

Downes and the other original members of Asia--Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened an event in England in the early part of 2006 to discuss the possibility of reforming the band. The group, which was missing Howe who was working with Yes during that time, was renamed Toto XIV. They toured extensively.

In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The group also had a guest appearance by singer Michael McDonald, and a backing singer named Mabvuto Carpenter.
