Lolita's Personality

Macaws make wonderful companion birds. They are friendly and intelligent. They are best with well-rounded families. They can become bored quickly and will discover ways to entertain themselves when their owners aren't engaging with them enough often. Macaws that aren't socialized can become aggressive, and even bite. It is crucial that boundaries are clearly established to ensure that the macaw doesn't feel threatened.

Blue and Gold Macaws, in general are active birds that enjoy playing, interacting, and climb. They need to spend at least 2 to 3 hours every day outside to keep their minds stimulated and for physical exercise. They enjoy playing games, learning tricks, and listening to music. They also enjoy playing in parks and playgrounds while hiking, and also visiting local restaurants and bars. In addition to being a fun pet, they also make wonderful companions for children.

Despite their adoring nature however, these birds can be loud and can cause a disturbance for those living near. They are capable of ear-shattering calls and screech-calls, which can be disruptive in apartments and condos or near young children who may be frightened by their noise.

The species is also monomorphic. Males and females are difficult to differentiate. This is why DNA testing is the only reliable method to determine the sex. Once the bird's sex is known the breeding process can begin.

Blue and Gold Macaws, like all pets, require training to learn commands and phrases. This is a long process and the pet's owner must be patient and understand that this is a challenging task. The use of positive reinforcement can speed up the process and help correct any behavioral issues.

Lolita's Care

Since the 1960s, activists have pleaded for Lolita to retire from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium. They also would like her to be relocated to an open-water pen. After the 1993 film Free Willy sparked public outrage over the return of orca Keiko into the wild, activists believed that Lolita would suffer a similar fate. However, she was never given the chance to return to the ocean.

Lolita's captors, also known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored the advice of a vet and continued to put her in danger. They are a danger to her health by forcing her to perform for tourists. They push her to the limit with high-speed circles and head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. They also keep her in a tank one-and-a half times smaller than her natural habitat.

Fortunately, in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates dubbed Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who view her as to be a family member, on a plan to eventually transport her to open water. The plan included a facility in Washington's westcoast, where she could live for the remainder of her life, receive human care, and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen will be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and surrounded by the ocean itself and not an actual concrete tank.

If the plan had been successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki), might still be alive. In the wild, killer whales are social animals that connect with their family members until they die. Lolita has been a captive at Seaquarium for 40 years. Many activists across the country have called for Lolita's departure from Seaquarium and then release into the wild. Lolita's Diet
