The Band Toto Asia

Toto was expanding its production facilities abroad and doing business in France, Germany, Indonesia, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. North America was seen as an opportunity to grow for toilets and bidet seats, in contrast to its "base" markets in Japan and China.

Dhaniram Toto documented Toto words so that the next generation could read the words. Many words were substituted with foreign words. For example, dui, which is Bengali for verandah was being used.

Origins

Toto's early history, which began in 1917, mirrored Japan's economic growth. In the early years of its existence, the company made goods to meet demand for modern, contemporary urban housing. It was the first tunnel kilns in the country that could produce ceramics continuously. It also pioneered the use automation to control production, which allows for more efficiency and consistency.

In the late 1980s the company began to expand outwards to take advantage of sales and new markets. The company created the Cera Trading Company to import and market other products from other manufacturers in order to complement its own line of sanitary earthenwares and plumbing fittings. This strategy increased sales and increased the company's market share in the world.

In the 1990s Toto began focusing on research and development of water-related appliances. It also upgraded its distribution system to better meet the needs of customers and to increase profits. The company employed the same just-in-time approach to its supply chain management and sales program. This resulted in a higher level customer satisfaction.

Toto continues to invent with regard to toilet technology. The latest toilet from the company features a strong, eco-friendly tornado flush. Toto also makes use of recycled water in its manufacturing process and has a green procurement policy. In addition to toilets, Toto manufactures bathtubs and faucets, as well as hand dryers that are more efficient in terms of energy consumption than conventional models.

The first Toto museum opened in the year 2015. It has exhibitions on the most iconic products of Toto, their evolution, the group companies (all of which are made from ceramics), the history of plumbing and even bath units. In another gallery, visitors will find Toto products sold all over. The museum also has a bathroom with a WASHLET and other toilet innovations.

Before the formation of Toto, members of the group did session work for many musicians. Boz Scaggs album Silk Degrees featured keyboardist David Paich as well as guitarists Mike Porcaro & Steve Lukather and drummers Jeff Porcaro & Steve Lukather. They also played on records by Steely Dan, Seals and Crofts, and Sonny and Cher.

Discography

It is common for a group with a name such as Asia to be a prog rock group, but it is actually a relatively straightforward rock group. The band began as four-piece, and released two albums: 1979's self-titled debut and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. Although the band have a variety of musical backgrounds, their biggest success was in 1982 with Toto IV.

The album was a huge blockbuster, but it was not without its own set of issues. Record companies put the band on the place with the directive "give us an album that is a success or we'll drop you" and the pressure was on them to deliver. Luckily for Toto they delivered and they did it with the aid of the smash single "Africa."

Toto's musical mastery is the result of their prior experience. Before forming the group, the band members were session musicians for artists such as Boz Scaggs. Steely Dan and Seals and Crofts. Their sonic signature has become the norm for '80s pop, influencing many modern artists.

The album starts out hard with songs such as Running Out of Time or Unknown Soldier that show the band's ability to create great AOR tunes that slowly creep into your head. The album also contains more jazzy, slower tracks such as The Little Things and Chinatown. The album ends with Great Expectations. This song mixes folk and distortion AOR which could sound completely wrong but actually works very well.

After Toto IV, the band's fortunes began to decline. David Hungate left to concentrate on his solo career, and the band went through various drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the band following drug-related charges. The band continued to play with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.

Toto released Isolation despite the turbulence. It wasn't as popular as IV. However, the band still managed to release another chart-topping album in the year 1992 with Kingdom of Desire. The album was the last of Toto's lineup and the debut of Simon Phillips, a new singer.

Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album, was a return to a traditional sextet style and a more consistent, stronger album with a sharper edge. Its edgier sound reflected the maturation of the group, with drummer Bobby Kimball's increased ability on the drums and a more confident, mature vocal delivery from singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's keyboard playing was also more sophisticated, sharper and less akin to earlier efforts.

After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live performance in Amsterdam which was released as a two-CD set called Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released their new studio album just a few months after and embarked on a world tour promote the album. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started looking through old tapes and demos for a new album featuring songs that had never been recorded before. It was completed in 2001 as a double album titled Then and Now. It was the first album by the band without the single track "A". The album also included a previously unreleased track "Kari-Anne".
