The Band Toto Asia

Toto was expanding its production facilities overseas, and doing business in France and Germany, Indonesia, Korea and Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. Toto believed that North America as a growth market for Washlet bidet seats and toilets, as opposed to its "base" markets of Japan and China.

Dhaniram Toto documented Toto words to ensure that the future generation could understand the words. Many words were substituted with foreign words. For example dui, which is Bengali for verandah, was used.

Incorporated in 1917, Toto's beginnings mirrored Japan's development. In the first half of 1917, Toto made goods to meet the demand for modern, contemporary urban housing. It was the first tunnel kilns in the country to produce ceramics continuously. It also pioneered automation to allow production control, allowing greater efficiency and a more consistent production.

In the latter half of the 1980s, the company began expanding overseas to take advantage of sales and new markets. It launched the Cera Trading Company, importing and selling other products of manufacturers to complement its own line of sanitary earthenware and plumbing fittings. This strategy helped increase sales and expand the company's market share in the world.

In the 1990s, Toto began to concentrate on research and development of water-related appliances. It also redesigned its system of distribution to better serve customers and increase profit. The company also employed the just-in-time approach to its supply chain management as well as sales program. This resulted in a higher level of customer satisfaction.

Toto continued to develop toilet technology. Its latest toilet has an environmentally friendly, powerful tornado flush. Toto uses recycled water for its manufacturing process, and also has a green purchasing policy. In addition to toilets, Toto manufactures faucets and bathtubs and hand dryers that are more energy efficient than typical models.

The first Toto museum opened in the year 2015. It features exhibits on Toto’s seminal products and their evolution, the group companies (all of which are made from ceramics), the history of plumbing and other products like bath units. In another gallery, visitors can view Toto products sold all over. The museum also has a bathroom that includes a WASHLET toilet and other toilet-related innovations.

Before the formation of Toto members of the group performed sessions with various musicians. Keyboardist David Paich, drummer Jeff Porcaro, and guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather all performed on the album Silk Degrees by Boz Scaggs. They also played on records by Steely Don, Seals and Crofts and Sonny and Cher.

Discography

With a name as evocative as Asia one would expect the group to be prog queens and kings - but it's actually a fairly simple rock band. The group started out as a quartet, and they recorded two albums - 1979's self-titled debut and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. The band has a varied musical background but their biggest success came in 1982 when they released Toto IV.

The album was a major blockbuster, however it did not come without its share of issues. Record companies placed the band on the place with the directive "give us an album that is a success or we'll take you off the market" and the pressure was on to give it. Luckily for Toto they did, with the help of the smash hit single "Africa."

Toto's musical mastery is the result of their previous experience. Before forming the group, the band members were session musicians for artists such as Boz Scaggs. Steely Dan and Seals and Crofts. Their sonic trademark has become the standard for '80s music, influencing many contemporary artists.

The album opens up hard with tracks like Running Out of Time or Unknown Soldier that show the band's ability to create great AOR tunes that slowly get into your head. The album also has some more mellow, jazzy tracks such as The Little Things and Chinatown. The album closes with Great Expectations, a song which combines folk and distorted AOR and could sound like a complete flop, but is incredibly effective.

After Toto IV, the band's fortunes started to plummet. David Hungate left the band to pursue a solo career and the band was dominated by drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the band in aftermath of drug-related charges. However, the band continued as a trio, which included Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.

Toto released Isolation despite the turbulence. It wasn't as well-liked as IV. However, the band still managed to release another chart-topping album in the year 1992 with Kingdom of Desire. The album was the last of Toto's lineup and the debut of Simon Phillips, a new vocalist.

Line-up

The band's third album, Turn Back, marked an reversion to the classic sextet format of previous albums. It was a more ferocious, consistent effort that had an edge that was stronger than Hydra. Its more punk-rock sound was a reflection of the maturation of the group, with drummer Bobby Kimball's increased virtuosity on drums, and an improved, mature vocal delivery by singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's keyboard skills were also more sophisticated, sharper and less akin to previous recordings.

After touring to promote their album, the group recorded their Amsterdam live concert which was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set titled Falling In Between. The studio album came out shortly after, and the group embarked on a world-wide tour to promote the album. During this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began looking through old tapes and demos to discover songs that hadn't been recorded before. The album was released in 2001 as a duo album titled Then & Now. It was the first album in the band's history not to include any single song that had the word "A" in its title. It also included one previously unreleased track, "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New was a commercial failure and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis that affected his singing abilities. In addition, Hungate returned to Nashville and drummer Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.

Downes and the other original members of Asia - Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened a meeting in England in the early part of 2006 to discuss the possibility of officially restructuring the band. The lineup, which was minus Howe (who was working with Yes at the time) was eventually referred to as Toto XIV and toured extensively.

In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band also had a special guest appearance from singer Michael McDonald and a backing vocalist named Mabvuto Carver.
