The Hands That Carved Christ

German sculptor Heinrich Dannecker had a reputation early in his career for sculpting beautiful Greek goddesses. But as he got older, he felt he needed to pour all of his strength, talent, and time into a masterpiece; so he set out to sculpt a representation of Christ. It took three tries before he was satisfied with his carving, and it turned out to be so beautiful that when people laid eyes upon it, they could do nothing but love and adore. Hearing of Dannecker’s expertise, Napoleon desired to commission a carving of Venus for the Louvre, to which Dannecker replied, “Sir, the hands that carved Christ can never again carve a heathen goddess.”

For centuries, artists such as Dannecker have been creating beautiful portrayals of Christ that have both inspired and comforted people. But are we really capable of imagining what the risen Savior will look like? Even the most glorious of sculptures and paintings can only depict His human image; they cannot come close to showing the beauty, majesty, love, and perfection we will see on that glorious day when our Lord and Savior returns.

Our Lord has written the promise of the resurrection, not in books alone but in every leaf in springtime.

Tender Mercies

Scriptures: Genesis 41:41–46
Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I hereby put you in charge of the entire land of Egypt.” Then Pharaoh removed his signet ring from his hand and placed it on Joseph’s finger. He dressed him in fine linen clothing and hung a gold chain around his neck. (Genesis 41:41–42)
Pharaoh swept his hand out wide, so as to include all that vast land of Egypt, and said, "It's all yours, Joseph." Then he took off his signet ring and put it on Joseph's hand.

You know what that ring signified, don't you? It was the platinum charge card of that day. It was the way the king stamped the invoices, the laws, or anything else he wanted to verify or validate with his seal. Now Joseph had that ring on his finger, placed there by the Pharaoh himself. Joseph wore the authority of the king's imprint.

Joseph's Cinderella-like promotion was incredible. But when God determines the time is right, that's the way He operates.

When the reward comes, thank God without pride. Only God can bring you through and out of the dungeon. Only God can reward you for your faithfulness. If He has, be grateful, not proud. Remember, with humility, that it is God who has put you there.

Some of you are on the verge of promotion and you don't even know it, because God doesn't announce His appointments in advance. What you have to do, while you wait, is to believe His promises. While in the darkness of your dungeon, by faith, trust him to bring the light of a new dawn. In the winter of your discontent, believe there'll be a spring.

The God of Joseph will stay beside us during the dungeon days; He will not forsake or forget us. He will be there during the blast of the winter storm, holding out the promise of springtime. He will be there through the darkest night, quietly reminding us of the promise of morning light.

Joseph learned that a broken and contrite heart is not the end, but the beginning. Bruised and crushed by the blows of disappointment and unrealized dreams, he discovered that God had never left his side. When the affliction ended, he had been refined, and he came forth as gold. He had become a person of greater stability, of deeper quality, of stronger character. God's promises are just as much for us as they were for Joseph. His grace is still at work. His tender mercies accompany us from the pit to the pinnacle.

Fresh Air: Focusing on Moments of Fresh Faith - Flourishing

They shall still bear fruit in old age; they shall be fresh and flourishing.
Psalm 92:14

Springtime makes us feel fresh! Fresh flowers, fresh leaves on the trees, the fragrance of fresh air. It’s a kind of rebirth.

The same thing happens for the believer every single day. God gives us a fresh start as we awaken! Psalm 92 tells us to sing His praises and declare His lovingkindness every morning (verses 1-2). As we begin each day with worship, keeping our eyes on Him, the Lord keeps us fresh with a renewed spirit, an excited faith, a hopeful heart, and a smile. It’s a lifelong experience.

The ruts and routines of life have a way of dragging us into the zone of mediocrity. But remember: “The righteous shall flourish like a palm tree, he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon. Those who are planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our God. They shall still bear fruit in old age; they shall be fresh and flourishing” (verses 12-14).

Flourish in your faith today by keeping your eyes on Him.

Fresh faith is compelling. It’s clean and crisp like the beginning of a new day…. Freshness comes by staying whole with God…. Middle age and old age aren’t for complaining, but for proclaiming the goodness of God.

Spring Forward: Be a Prayer Warrior

Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.
Ephesians 6:18, NLT

Springtime is a great time to spring into action as a prayer warrior. The enemy is real, the battle is fierce, and we’re to wear the armor of God, “praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints” (Ephesians 6:18).

Is there someone you can fervently hold before the Lord in sustained prayer? A family member? A youngster? Your pastor? A neighbor in need? A missionary? A member of the armed forces?

Learning to pray for someone as a prayer warrior is an exercise in creativity. How would you go about it? Maybe by writing a biblical prayer every day. Maybe by pacing back and forth in verbal conversation with God as if talking to a friend. Perhaps in finding a prayer partner and interceding for this person regularly.

Someone needs your prayers this spring. Your prayers could, well, put a spring in their step!

You are active as a prayer warrior the moment you put words to your heartfelt feelings and talk to God about them. Your heart will be deployed to wherever God sends you in prayer.
