Sorrow and Joy

Bible in a Year:
2 Chronicles 13–14
John 12:1–26
No one could distinguish the sound of the shouts of joy from the sound of weeping.

Today's Scripture & Insight:
Ezra 3:8–13
Angela’s family reeled with sorrow as they experienced three bereavements in just four weeks. After the one involving the sudden death of their nephew, Angela and her two sisters gathered around the kitchen table for three days, only leaving to buy an urn, get takeout, and attend the funeral. As they wept over his death, they also rejoiced over the ultrasound photos of the new life growing within their youngest sister.

In time, Angela found comfort and hope from the Old Testament book of Ezra. It describes God’s people returning to Jerusalem after the Babylonians destroyed the temple and deported them from their beloved city (see Ezra 1). As Ezra watched the temple being rebuilt, he heard joyful praises to God (3:10–11). But he also listened to the weeping of those who remembered life before exile (v. 12).

One verse especially consoled Angela: “No one could distinguish the sound of the shouts of joy from the sound of weeping, because the people made so much noise” (v. 13). She realized that even if she was drenched in deep sorrow, joy could still appear.

We too might grieve the death of a loved one or mourn a different loss. If so, we can express our cries of pain along with our moments of rejoicing to God, knowing that He hears us and gathers us in His arms.

Loving God, in this world we experience pain and suffering. Spark joy in me as I look to You for hope and peace. Amen.

Creating an impact in the world necessitates venturing beyond our comfort zone and expressing ourselves. By advocating for our convictions, we possess the ability to instigate transformation and leave a lasting impression on others' lives. Nevertheless, discovering our voice can feel intimidating. It demands that we confront our anxieties, uncertainties, and lack of self-assurance. However, when we embrace our voice and communicate our authentic beliefs, we tap into our inner resilience and strength. We come to recognize the influence our words hold and the potential we possess to effect change in the world. Therefore, let us step forward into the radiance, embrace our voice, and employ it to forge optimistic changes in our global community.

True Comfort
By Anna Von Reitz

Don't worry about the Mark of the Beast. Worry instead about the Mark of the Holy Spirit.

Just as goats and sheep are separate and determined by their natures, so the children of darkness are separate from the children of light.

Those who shepherd them are separate, too, according to their natures.

While the symbols of worldly power and vice accompany those of darkness, the symbols of life and virtue accompany those of light.

This is completely self-evident to those who see the spiritual realm's signs and symbols, and even those who do not have eyes to see these ethereal signs and symbols ---we all nonetheless sense them.

So don't worry about the Mark of the Beast; be more aware and concerned about having the seal of the Holy Spirit placed upon your life.
(Ephesians 1: 14).

My Siamese cat was purring as he died, loved and loving, grateful to the end. I hope to go out like that, with no regrets, complete in loving and being loved, grateful for a life well-lived, full of striving, not counting any sacrifice. And unafraid. Trusting the Mystery that brought him here to carry him onward.

May we all face our lives and our deaths like that, knowing that we are part of all Creation and never truly lost, never subject to the judgment of any man, never alone, never forgotten.

Let the Living God place the seal of the Holy Spirit on your life and stop worrying about the darkness; there may be overwhelming amounts of shadow, and yet, it is vanquished by your light, however small, however wavering.

So now when the darkness gathers, shine.

When all their forces are arrayed, shine.

Choose this day whom you will serve, and shine.

Like the stars in the sky, shine and hold your course, a beacon and guide for others. Out of all the billions of people in the world, you are here.
Don't be dismayed. Don't think it is any mistake.

Just as you are, you are sufficient and more than enough, to make all the difference that's needed, so don't fear or worry anymore. Be comforted.
You are here at the right time and place, doing the right thing for the right reasons, and nothing, no, nothing in the Universe, will stand against you.
