Although there is some evidence that severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 can invade the human placenta, limited data exist on the gestational age-dependent expression profile of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 cell entry mediators, angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 and transmembrane protease serine 2, at the human maternal-fetal interface. There is also no information as to whether the expression of these mediators is altered in pregnancies complicated by preeclampsia or preterm birth. This is important because the expression of decidual and placental angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 and transmembrane protease serine 2 across gestation may affect the susceptibility of pregnancies to vertical transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus2.

Methods A literature review was conducted to identify an appropriate database. Stakeholder working groups took place across the LHD regarding implementation. An online vaccination consent form was developed and installed on the LHD network within 2 weeks. Administrative staff ensured timely entry of HCW data and vaccination status and analysis of uptake using Microsoft Excel. Results REDCap (Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN, USA) was identified as the most appropriate web-based platform based on the ease of developing a secure and inexpon program. REDCap is an inexpensive and easy to use system that allowed public health authorities rapid analysis of HCW vaccination coverage rates. What are the implications for practitioners? The findings add to the growing body of evidence demonstrating the utility of online systems for monitoring HCW influenza vaccinations. These results will be relevant to healthcare organisations and public health practitioners seeking quick and feasible research and data collection platforms.Cacao (Theobroma cacao L.), an introduced tree crop in Dominica, is important for foreign exchange earnings from fine or flavour cocoa. The genetic structure of farmed cacao in Dominica was examined to identify varieties for conservation, breeding, and propagation to improve their cocoa industry. Cacao trees (156) from 73 sites over seven geographical regions were genotyped at 192 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers. Identity, regional differentiation, phylogenetic, multi-variate, ancestry, and core collection analyses were performed. Farmed cacao germplasm had moderate gene diversity (He = 0.320 ± 0.005) from generally unique trees, but cocoa growing regions were genetically similar. Synonymous matching (16.3%) showed that some clonal material was supplied to farmers. Cacao trees were mainly mixed from Amelonado, Criollo, Iquitos, Contamana, and Marañon ancestries, with predominantly Amelonado-Criollo hybrids. Criollo ancestry, linked to fine or flavour cocoa, was found at more than 30% in 28 unique trees. Forty-five trees, containing the SNP diversity of cacao in Dominica, are recommended as a core germplasm collection. This study identifies promising trees for improving cocoa quality; provides genetic evidence that community, regional, or country-wide pooling would not compromise the exclusive fine or flavour cocoa industry; and discusses other implications towards improving the Dominican cocoa industry.Onion (Allium cepa) is not highly tractable for development of molecular markers due to its large (16 gigabases per 1C) nuclear genome. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are useful for genetic characterization and marker-aided selection of onion because of codominance and common occurrence in elite germplasm. We completed genotyping by sequencing (GBS) to identify SNPs in onion using 46 F2 plants, parents of the F2 plants (Ailsa Craig 43 and Brigham Yellow Globe 15-23), two doubled haploid (DH) lines (DH2107 and DH2110), and plants from 94 accessions in the USDA National Plant Germplasm System (NPGS). SNPs were called using the TASSEL 3.0 Universal Network Enabled Analysis (UNEAK) bioinformatics pipeline. Sequences from the F2 and DH plants were used to construct a pseudo-reference genome against which genotypes from all accessions were scored. Quality filters were used to identify a set of 284 high quality SNPs, which were placed onto an existing genetic map for the F2 family. Accessions showed a moderate level of diversity (mean He = 0.341) and evidence of inbreeding (mean F = 0.592). GBS is promising for SNP discovery in onion, although lack of a reference genome required extensive custom scripts for bioinformatics analyses to identify high quality markers.In blood vessels, vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) generally exist in two major phenotypes contractile and non-contractile (synthetic). The contractile phenotype is predominant and includes quiescent or differentiated VSMCs, which function as the regulators of blood vessel diameter and blood flow. According to some literature in the field, contractile VSMCs do not switch to the non-contractile phenotype due to the activation of specific transcription factors that are considered as guardians of the contractile phenotype. However, a vast amount of the literature uses the terms remodeling and phenotype switching of contractile VSMCs interchangeably based mainly on studies dealing with atherosclerosis. The use of the terms remodeling and switching to describe changes in phenotype based on morphological criteria can be confusing. The term remodeling was first used to describe morphological changes in the heart and was soon used to describe phenotype changes of contractile VSMCs based on morphological criteria.
