Adult child are used to taking the responsibility of taking care of their older parents in Chinese culture. However, the migration of adult child is not uncommon now in the context of urbanization in China. The purpose of this study is to explore the impact of child's migration on health status and health care utilization of older parents with chronic diseases left behind.
The data of the 2015 nationally representative longitudinal survey of the aged population in China were used in this study. Binary logistic regression was used to evaluate the impact of adult child's migration on health status and health care utilization of older parents with chronic diseases left behind.
About a quarter of the respondents (25.5%) had at least one migrant child. Most of the respondents (86.6%) rated their health as poor, and 42.0% of them suffered from physical limitations. Nearly half of the respondents (45.0%) had depressive symptoms, but the vast majority (88.2%) were generally satisfied with their lives. Only a qu care utilization of older parents with chronic diseases left behind, which means a comprehensive effect on their health status. Further health policies should focus on improving the well-being of older parents with chronic diseases left behind.
Longitudinal studies examining the impact of changes in COVID-19 pandemic-related stressors and experiences, and coping styles on the mental health trajectory of employed individuals during the lockdown are limited. The study examined the mental health trajectories of a sample of employed adults in Hamilton, Ontario during the initial lockdown and after the re-opening following the first wave in Canada. Further, this study also identified the pandemic-related stressors and coping strategies associated with changes in depressive symptoms in employed adults during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The InHamilton COVID-19 longitudinal study involved 579 employees aged 22-88 years from a large public university in an urban area of Hamilton, Ontario at baseline (April 2020). Participants were followed monthly with 6 waves of data collected between April and November 2020. A growth mixture modeling approach was used to identify distinct groups of adults who followed a similar pattern of depressive symptoms over time and tgative mental health impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic are specific to subgroups within the population and stressors may persist and worsen over time. Providing access to evidence-informed approaches that foster adaptive coping, alleviate the depressive symptoms, and promote the mental health of working adults is critical.
In Mozambique, HIV infection disproportionately affects young adults, particularly women. Despite awareness and knowledge of HIV transmission, many university students have not received HIV testing and continue to engage in high-risk sexual behaviors, including inconsistent condom use. Further understanding of patterns of engagement with HIV prevention and testing is key to reducing HIV transmission in this at-risk population.
This study used a sequential mixed methods approach to examine patterns of engagement and perceptions of HIV prevention and testing services among higher education students in Mozambique. Survey data were collected from a representative sample of 501 students from Universidade Eduardo Mondlane (UEM) in Maputo, Mozambique to assess the primary outcomes of 1) HIV testing within the last 12 months; and 2) condom use during last sexual encounter. We employed univariate and multivariate regression models. The survey was followed by qualitative interviews with 70 survey participants whichof condom use and HIV testing, and perceived HIV risk, interventions tailored specifically to male and female students may impact engagement with HIV prevention and testing and empower informed choices about sexual behaviors.
Given gendered differences in uptake of condom use and HIV testing, and perceived HIV risk, interventions tailored specifically to male and female students may impact engagement with HIV prevention and testing and empower informed choices about sexual behaviors.
This study aimed to compare surgically induced astigmatism (SIA) on the anterior and total cornea during cataract surgery through a 2.2 mm steep meridian incision.
The study included 69 left eyes of 69 patients who had undergone cataract surgery. The 69 eyes were classified into three subgroups according to the preoperative steep meridian. Following phacoemulsification, an intraocular lens was inserted into the bag. The keratometric measurements were taken 12 months postoperatively, on the anterior cornea (automated keratometer and anterior keratometry [K] from a rotating Scheimpflug camera) and total cornea (equivalent K reading [EKR] 3.0 mm, EKR 4.5 mm, total corneal refractive power (TCRP) 2.0 mm ring, TCRP 3.0 mm zone, TCRP 4.0 mm zone). The SIA was analyzed for each parameter.
On the double-angle polar plot, the summated vector mean values of SIA determined by the automated keratometer and Scheimpflug anterior K were 0.28 diopter (axis 177°) and 0.37 diopter (axis 175°) in with-the-rule (WTR) astigmatism; 0.03 diopter (axis 156°) and 0.18 diopter (axis 177°) in oblique astigmatism; 0.15 diopter (axis 96°) and 0.17 diopter (axis 73°) in against-the-rule (ATR) astigmatism. The mean SIAs on the total cornea ranged from 0.31 to 0.42 diopter in WTR astigmatism; from 0.16 to 0.27 diopter in oblique astigmatism; from 0.04 to 0.11 diopter in ATR astigmatism. Mean magnitude SIA ranged from 0.41 to 0.46 diopter on anterior corneal surface and 0.50 to 0.62 diopter on total cornea. J
and J
of the posterior cornea showed no significant changes after cataract surgery, and the changes in J
and J
did not show any statistical differences between the anterior and total cornea (all p > 0.05).
There were no differences in the summed vector mean values of SIA between the anterior cornea and the total cornea.

Condom use remains the most effective behavioural method for the prevention of HIV and unplanned pregnancies. However, condom use remains inconsistent among young people. Exploring the condom use decision-making processes that adolescents engage in might provide information that would assist in the prevention of many challenges related to poor sexual and reproductive health outcomes. This study therefore aimed to explore the factors that influenced decision-making about sexual debut and condom use of adolescents from two schools in the Western Cape, South Africa.
A sample of 16 adolescents were selected using purposive sampling. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/3-amino-9-ethylcarbazole.html Data were collected using semi-structured, individual interviews. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the data generated.
The link between sexual debut and affective processes was frequently discussed in condom use decision-making. Decisions about sexual debut were influenced by the belief that sex was a perceived symbol of 'true love' on the one hand, and respect for perceiveve processes to improve adolescent sexual and reproductive outcomes.
In maternity services, as in other areas of healthcare, increasing emphasis is placed on improving "efficiency" or "productivity". The first step in any efficiency and productivity analysis is the selection of relevant input and output measures. Within healthcare quantifying what is produced (outputs) can be difficult. The aim of this paper is to identify a potential output measure, that can be used in an assessment of the efficiency and productivity of labour and birth in-hospital care in Australia and to assess the extent to which it reflects the principles of woman-centred care.
This paper will survey available perinatal and maternal datasets in Australia to identify potential output measures; map identified output variables against the principles of woman-centred care outlined in Australia's national maternity strategy; and based on this, create a preliminary composite outcome measure for use in assessing the efficiency and productivity of Australian maternity services.
There are significant gaps inncy and childbirth in Australia beyond traditional measure of maternal and neonate morbidity and mortality. Such measures to capture respect, choice and access could complement existing safety measures to inform the assessment of productivity and efficiency in maternity care.
Rhodopsin (RHO) is the most well-known genetic cause of autosomal dominant retinitis pigmentosa (adRP). This study aimed to investigate the genetic cause of a large Chinese adRP family and assess the pathogenicity of the detected RHO mutant.
Routine ocular examinations were conducted on all participants. Next-generation sequencing with targeted capture was performed to screen mutations in 179 genes associated with hereditary retinal diseases and 10 candidate genes. Variants detected by NGS were validated by Sanger sequencing and evaluated for pathogenicity. Fragments of mutant and wild-type RHO were cloned into the pEGFP-N1 vector and were transfected into different cell lines to observe the cellular localization of the Rhodopsin-GFP fusion protein and evaluate the expression of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress markers. RT-PCR analysis was used to detect transfected the splicing of X box-binding protein 1 (XBP1) mRNA, which is a critical factor affecting ER stress.
Genetic analysis identified a heterozygous missense variant, RHO, c.284T > C (p.L95P) in this adRP family. Another RHO variant (p.P53R) that we reported previously was also included in further functional assessment. Both misfolded mutant proteins accumulated in the ER in a manner similar to that noted for the classic mutant P23H. Spliced XBP1 was observed in cells transfected with mutants, indicating an increase in ER stress.
Although the p.L95P variant is not a novel change, it was the first variant to be functionally evaluated and reported in Chinese RP patients. The results in our study provide significant evidence to classify the p.L95P mutation as a class II mutation.

Mycobacteria avium (M. avium) is a species of ubiquitous slowly growing nontuberculous mycobacteria. It causes opportunistic infections. However, M. avium-related peritonitis in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients is rare.
A 51-year-old female end-stage kidney disease patient undergoing PD was admitted for a noninfectious complication. She presented catheter exit site drainage and slightly increased PD effluent white cell count (WCC) with polymorphonuclear predominance on admission. Exit site infection and PD-related peritonitis were diagnosed. Repeated cultures of effluent and drainage were negative. Initial empirical antibiotics and further adjustment were not rewarding. PD was terminated 2 weeks later, however, shortly the patient developed stupor, high fever, peritoneal irritation, and spontaneous chylous ascites, and showed elevated ascitic adenosine deaminase (ADA). The manifestations persisted and the patient's general condition deteriorated despite intensified antibiotic therapy. Massive parallel sequencing identified M.
