The group Toto was formed in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also highly acclaimed studio musicians who worked with Boz Scaggs at the time) and singer/bassist Bobby Kimball. Taking their name from the Latin word that means "all encompassing," the group was determined to explore every musical style.

In 1981 the third album by Toto Turn Back was a complete failure, but they rebound with their fourth release Isolation with two hits including the title track and Roseanna. The album and their tour established them as a brand all over the world.

After a gap of few years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in 1986. The album is an departure from the ballads on previous albums, and features some heavy rock. This was their first platinum album in North America.

During the recording of the band's fifth album, the band loses their manager and is put in financial difficulty. They decide to record a brand new album and change their name with an entirely different producer. The lead vocalist Fergie Frederiksen is let go and replaced by Joseph Williams, son of legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman and gives the band a much-needed boost.

The band released Mindfields in 1999 and embarks on a massive worldwide tour. After a few months in Europe they come to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a brief hiatus, Toto resumes their recording and release their first live album titled Absolutely Live in 1993. It also features a cover of Weezer's song Hash Pipe as a response to the band's coverage of Africa on their recent tour. Toto's touring lineup includes drummer Lenny Castro and bassist Shannon Forrest along with keyboardist Shem Von Schroeck.

In 1996, the band returned to tour and release an album. It was the first time the original members took to the stage together for more than 10 years.

The next year, Toto toured together with Ringo Starr and his All Starr Band. This was the last time all of Toto's original members appeared together on stage at the same time. After that, the group was again disbanded. Toto reunited for an event benefiting the ALS Foundation in 2010. to raise funds for the ALS Foundation. It was the first time in 31 year that all Toto's original members were on stage together. In addition to the original members, keyboardist Greg Tambu filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate filled in for Shem Von Schroeck.
