Boston University has created a hybrid COVID-19 variant by combining Omicron, the highly contagious strain, and the more deadly original Wuhan strain. The new strain killed 80% of mice in a study conducted by the University. Why has this type of dangerous gain-of-function research been allowed to continue in the U.S.? Boston University released the following statement “This research is not gain-of-function research, meaning it did not amplify the Washington state SARS-COV-2 virus strain or make it more dangerous... In fact, this research made the virus replicate less dangerous.” Dr. Richard Ebright, a chemist at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, condemned the University saying, "The research is a clear example of gain-of-function research. If we are to avoid a next lab-generated pandemic, it is imperative that oversight of enhanced potential pandemic pathogen research be strengthened." A leading scientist in the Israeli Government, Professor Shmuel Shapira, slammed the research stating, "This should be totally forbidden, it’s playing with fire." With no accountability for the original gain-of-function research linked to the COVID-19 pandemic, how can we be assured we are protected from another lab leak?
