San Diego: Pursuit & Search for Wanted Suspect (Drove Wrong-Way on the I-805 Caught on Camera)

An SDPD officer spotted the male driver of the red Alfa Romero driving erratically while using a cell phone. The officer attempted to pull over the suspect and the suspect fled at a high rate of speed. When the officer ran the license plates, it was found that the vehicle was wanted for a "246" (Shooting into an occupied dwelling) incident.

The driver fled, making his way to the southbound I-805 and went into Chula Vista, where he exited onto westbound H St. The suspect made a U-turn and went back to the I-805 and went northbound to the eastbound Hwy 54.

The suspect went back into the San Diego city limits and was running "Stop" signs and "Red" lights at high speed. The suspect made his way west and into National City, making several more U-turns. He entered the northbound lanes of the I-805 from S. 43rd St and drive southbound in the northbound lanes. at some point, the right rear tire came off of the wheel. He went against the northbound traffic for approx 2 miles and suddenly stopped at the gore point of the NB I-805 and the Hwy 54 transition lanes.

The suspect got out of his vehicle and ran across the transition lanes and went into the area called "The Jungle". The Police set up a perimeter immediately from the I-805 to the Plaza Bonita Mall. "The Jungle" is the heavily wooded area of the Sweetwater River and has a large population of homeless and their encampments. The SDPD ABLE helicopter lost the suspect in the heavy tree and brush area.

The northbound I-805 traffic was shut down for approx 20 minutes, as the suspect was considered to be armed and dangerous. The HOV, #1, & #2 lanes were finally opened. A search with officers and K-9s failed to find the suspect and the search was called off after approx 1.5 hours.
