How Will You Live?
By Billy Graham • February 18

And Jesus said, . . . and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.
—Mark 14:62
The world in which we live is full of pessimism. No Christian has the scriptural right to go around wringing his hands wondering what we are to do in the face of the present world situation. The Scripture says that in the midst of persecution, confusion, wars, and rumors of wars, we are to comfort one another with the knowledge that our Lord Jesus Christ is coming back in triumph, glory, and majesty. Many times when I go to bed at night I think to myself that before I awaken Christ may come. Sometimes when I get up and look at the dawn I think that perhaps this is the day He will come. He has told us Christians to be watching constantly and to be ready, “for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh” (Matthew 24:44). Do you think Christ will come today? “Probably not,” you say. It is on just such a day that He may come. What a glorious time of reunion it’s going to be, when we shall be caught up with Him!

Prayer for the day

Thank You, Jesus, for the hope that even today I may have the joy of seeing You face to face! Amen.

Scriptures: Job 27:1–23
"The wicked go to bed rich but wake to find that all their wealth is gone.

Terror overwhelms them like a flood, and they are blown away in the storms of the night.

The east wind carries them away, and they are gone. It sweeps them away.

It whirls down on them without mercy. They struggle to flee from its power.

But everyone jeers at them and mocks them." (Job 27:19–23)
Isn't that closing comment a great line? The wicked man may have more clothes in his closet, but he'll wind up leaving them to us. Remember the materialistic line that is framed around license plates? "He who dies with the most toys wins." The truth is, he who dies with the most toys passes them off to the righteous, and the righteous get to enjoy them! Job has come to realize this priority: wrong will occur, but it will not ultimately triumph. That brings a sense of justice.

There go those great riches! How often have we witnessed or heard about individuals who are loaded financially, but it isn't too many years before it is gone. Those riches were like an eagle—they made themselves wings. Rest assured, God keeps accurate records. He knows what He's about. Furthermore, He knows who is righteous and who is wicked.

It's easy to become confused if you watch too much of the evening news on television. Be very discerning about what you watch and what you read. If the source is not reliable, the information will be skewed. Thankfully, there are still some in our day who think straight and aren't afraid to say so. Their words remind us that evil is evil, that wrong actions will be judged, that even though the wicked may seem to be winning, they will ultimately lose! The nineteenth century American poet and essayist, James Russell Lowell, put it well:

Truth forever on the scaffold
Wrong forever on the throne—
Yet that scaffold sways the future
And, behind the dim unknown,
Standeth God within the shadow,
Keeping watch above His own.
Stay on the scaffold. Keep thinking straight. Refuse to tolerate wrong! Like Job, keep forming your priorities from the Word of God. Spend less time in the papers or watching TV and more time in the Scriptures. Let God dictate your agenda and help you interpret the events of our times. Become biblically correct rather than politically correct.

Silencing Lies

February 04, 2024
by Pastor Chuck Swindoll
Scriptures: Job 20:1–29
“Don’t you realize that from the beginning of time, ever since people were first placed on the earth,

the triumph of the wicked has been short lived and the joy of the godless has been only temporary? (Job 20:4–5)
Let's fast-forward momentarily and face the music. Some of you who are reading these words have awfully sharp tongues. You say things that cut, but you couch your words in phrases that sound pious and even eloquent. They can sound super religious at times, but they're hurtful and damaging. They imply much more than is actually said. It is here that self-control plays such a vital role. How valuable it is to think before we speak and then, even after giving our words careful thought, to measure their tone, their possible impact, their truthfulness. Zophar did none of the above. With reckless abandon he dropped his harsh words like depth charges. Though Job was a seasoned and mature man of God, they must have hurt as they exploded in his mind. Even for the strong, false accusations hurt.

Forming habits of self-restraint is an essential discipline. When receiving information about another, it's best to ask the source: "How do you know that? Who told you? Is this information credible?" Those questions have a way of silencing people who tend to pass along damaging and exaggerated information. They assist in getting to the bottom of rumors. Furthermore, truth is given the opportunity to flourish, replacing lies. But you need to know that this kind of truth-talking comes with a price.

Throughout Zophar's lecture, Job has been listening to what my mother used to call "a lot of palaver." Just a lot of lip flapping—he's been talking nonsense. What he's saying against Job isn't true, even though Zophar delivers his words poetically and eloquently. Job has patiently endured, but he refuses to let those words slide by.

I've heard it said that, no matter what, when false accusations are made, you just sit quietly and say nothing; God will defend you. There are some occasions when that may be appropriate. Not always. I often call to mind a motto from the American Revolution: "Trust in God but keep your powder dry." Wise counsel! If your reputation is being ruined by lies, if your company is going down the tubes because of false accusations, if your church is being destroyed and demoralized because of wrong information from lying lips, there are times it is necessary to step up and set the record straight. Truth has a way of silencing lies.
