Finally, a subset of 12 detection studies is identified as the most complete ones. An unequaled quantitative overview is presented. The field shows a remarkable dynamic, boosted by the research on COVID-19 diagnosis, and a perfect adaptation to mobile health.Label-free direct-optical biosensors such as surface-plasmon resonance (SPR) spectroscopy has become a gold standard in biochemical analytics in centralized laboratories. Biosensors based on photonic integrated circuits (PIC) are based on the same physical sensing mechanism evanescent field sensing. PIC-based biosensors can play an important role in healthcare, especially for point-of-care diagnostics, if challenges for a transfer from research laboratory to industrial applications can be overcome. Research is at this threshold, which presents a great opportunity for innovative on-site analyses in the health and environmental sectors. A deeper understanding of the innovative PIC technology is possible by comparing it with the well-established SPR spectroscopy. In this work, we shortly introduce both technologies and reveal similarities and differences. Further, we review some latest advances and compare both technologies in terms of surface functionalization and sensor performance.Epilepsy is a chronic disease with a significant social impact, given that the patients and their families often live conditioned by the possibility of an epileptic seizure and its possible consequences, such as accidents, injuries, or even sudden unexplained death. In this context, ambulatory monitoring allows the collection of biomedical data about the patients' health, thus gaining more knowledge about the physiological state and daily activities of each patient in a more personalized manner. For this reason, this article proposes a novel monitoring system composed of different sensors capable of synchronously recording electrocardiogram (ECG), photoplethysmogram (PPG), and ear electroencephalogram (EEG) signals and storing them for further processing and analysis in a microSD card. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/brd0539.html This system can be used in a static and/or ambulatory way, providing information about the health state through features extracted from the ear EEG signal and the calculation of the heart rate variability (HRV) and pulse travel time (PTT). The different applied processing techniques to improve the quality of these signals are described in this work. A novel algorithm used to compute HRV and PTT robustly and accurately in ambulatory settings is also described. The developed device has also been validated and compared with other commercial systems obtaining similar results. In this way, based on the quality of the obtained signals and the low variability of the computed parameters, even in ambulatory conditions, the developed device can potentially serve as a support tool for clinical decision-taking stages.Practitioners in the domains of architecture, engineering, and construction have conducted considerable research on smart homes and smart environments [...].A large number of workers and heavy equipment are used in most industrial sizes, and the prevention of safety accidents is one of the most important issues. Therefore, although a number of systems have been proposed to prevent accidents, existing studies assume that workers are gathered in some areas. These assumptions are not suitable for large-scale industrial sites in which workers form as a group and work in a large area. In other words, in a large-scale industrial site, existing schemes are unsuitable for the timely notifying of warnings of threats, and excessive energy is consumed. Therefore, we propose a k-means clustering-based safety system for a large-scale industrial site. In the proposed scheme, workers deployed over a large area are divided into an appropriate number of groups, and threat notification is delivered by a multicasting tree toward each cluster. The notification to workers is delivered through local flooding in each cluster. The simulation results show that the system is able to deliver the notification within a valid time, and it is energy efficient compared to the existing scheme. The residential environment is constantly evolving technologically. With this evolution, sensors have become intelligent interconnecting home appliances, personal computers, and mobile devices. Despite the benefits of this interaction, these devices are also prone to security threats and vulnerabilities. Ensuring the security of smart homes is challenging due to the heterogeneity of applications and protocols involved in this environment. This work proposes the FamilyGuard architecture to add a new layer of security and simplify management of the home environment by detecting network traffic anomalies. Experiments are carried out to validate the main components of the architecture. An anomaly detection module is also developed by using machine learning through one-class classifiers based on the network flow. The results show that the proposed solution can offer smart home users additional and personalized security features using low-cost devices.Continuous urban expansion transforms the natural land cover into impervious surfaces across the world. It increases the city's thermal intensity that impacts the local climate, thus, warming the urban environment. Surface urban heat island (SUHI) is an indicator of quantifying such local urban warming. In this study, we quantified SUHI for the two most populated cities in Alberta, Canada, i.e., the city of Calgary and the city of Edmonton. We used the moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) acquired land surface temperature (LST) to estimate the day and nighttime SUHI and its trends during 2001-2020. We also performed a correlation analysis between SUHI and selected seven influencing factors, such as urban expansion, population, precipitation, and four large-scale atmospheric oscillations, i.e., Sea Surface Temperature (SST), Pacific North America (PNA), Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), and Arctic Oscillation (AO). Our results indicated a continuous increase in the annual day and nighttime SUnsity and trends. These findings may help to develop the adaptation and mitigating strategies in fighting the impact of SUHI and ensure a sustainable city environment.Microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (µPADs) represent one of the promising green analytical strategies for low-cost and simple determination of various analytes. The actual task is the development of such devices for quantitation of antioxidants, e.g., flavonoids. In this paper, possibilities of a novel three-reagent µPAD including silver nitrate, 4-nitrophenyldiazonium tetrafluoroborate, and iron(III) chloride as reagents are assessed with respect to the determination of dihydroquercetin. It is shown that all the three reagents produce different colorimetric responses that can be detected by a mini-spectrophotometer-monitor calibrator or by a smartphone. The method is applicable to direct measuring high contents of dihydroquercetin (the linearity range is 0.026-1 mg mL-1, and the limit of detection is 7.7 µg mL-1), which is favorable for many dietary supplements. The analysis of a food supplement was possible with the relative standard deviations of 9-26%, which is satisfactory for quantitative and semiquantitative determinations. It was found that plotting a calibration graph in 3D space of the three reagents' responses allows us to distinguish dihydroquercetin from its close structural analogue, quercetin.A multifunctional scatterometer system and optimized radar signal processing for simultaneous observation of various physical oceanographic parameters are described in this paper. Existing observation methods with microwave remote sensing techniques generally use several separate systems such as scatterometer, altimeter, and Doppler radar for sea surface monitoring, which are inefficient in system operation and cross-analysis of each observation data. To improve this point, we integrated separate measurement functions into a single observation system by adding a measurement function of Doppler frequency to the existing system. So it enables to simultaneously measure the range and polarimetric responses of backscattering as well as movements of the sea surface. Here, the simultaneous measurement function of Doppler frequency was implemented by sampling an FMCW (frequency modulated continuous wave) radar signal as 2D raw data consisting of fast- and slow-time samples, i.e., the range and backscattering of radar target signals are analyzed from the fast-time samples while the Doppler frequency by the radar target's movement extracts from the slow-time samples. Through the Fourier transformed-based range-Doppler signal process, distance (R), backscattering (σ°), and Doppler frequency (fD) are sequentially extracted from the 2D raw data, and a correlation to the physical oceanographic parameters is analyzed. Operability of the proposed system was examed through total 3 times of field campaigns from June 2017 to August 2020 and the observation data retrieved by the radar measurement data (R, σ°, fD) was also cross-analyzed with in-situ data e.g., tide, significant wave height, and wind speed and direction. Differences in the comparative results as an observational accuracy are as follows. Tidal level (Root Mean Square Error 0.169 m (R)), significant wave height (RMSE 0.127 m (R), 0.362 m (σ°)), wind speed (RMSE 1.880 m/s (fD), 2.094 m/s (σ°)) and direction (18.84° (fD)).Theoretical and numerical studies were conducted on plasmonic interactions at a polarization-independent semiconductor-dielectric-semiconductor (SDS) sandwiched layer design and a brief review of the basic theory model was presented. The potential of bull's eye aperture (BEA) structures as device elements has been well recognized in multi-band structures. In addition, the sub-terahertz (THz) band (below 1 THz frequency regime) is utilized in communications and sensing applications, which are in high demand in modern technology. Therefore, we produced theoretical and numerical studies for a THz-absorbing-metasurface BEA-style design, with N-beam absorption peaks at a sub-THz band, using economical and commercially accessible materials, which have a low cost and an easy fabrication process. Furthermore, we applied the Drude model for the dielectric function of semiconductors due to its ability to describe both free-electron and bound systems simultaneously. Associated with metasurface research and applications, it is essential to facilitate metasurface designs to be of the utmost flexible properties with low cost. Through the aid of electromagnetic (EM) coupling using multiple semiconductor ring resonators (RRs), we could tune the number of absorption peaks between the 0.1 and 1.0 THz frequency regime. By increasing the number of semiconductor rings without altering all other parameters, we found a translation trend of the absorption frequencies. In addition, we validated our spectral response results using EM field distributions and surface currents. Here, we mainly discuss the source of the N-band THz absorber and the underlying physics of the multi-beam absorber designed structures. The proposed microstructure has ultra-high potentials to utilize in high-power THz sources and optical biomedical sensing and detection applications based on opto-electronics technology based on having multi-band absorption responses.
