Inadequate intakes of vitamin A (in 9.9%), folate (in 46.6%) and vitamin B12 (in 98.8%) were observed, in combination with high fibre (47.8 ± 19.0 g/day) intakes and high tea consumption. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/Y-27632.html If 10% iron bio-availability was assumed, 33.1% were estimated to have inadequate iron intake; if 5% iron bio-availability was assumed, 80.8% were estimated to have inadequate iron intakes. Conclusion In these low socio-economic agrarian communities, mothers of infants are living on home produce and rarely consumed foods (fortified salt, cooking oil and wheat flour) from the national food fortification programmes intended to address anaemia and other micronutrient deficiencies. The local refining of crude oil has become a lucrative but disturbing business in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. Deep inside the forest of the Niger Delta camps are built and used for the local refining of crude oil. The economic benefits this brings to the refiners are clear, however the host communities are severely hit by the activities of the 'local crude oil refiners'. Farmlands have been destroyed and fishing settlements evacuated as a result of pollution of the rivers and estuaries, with loss of lives and properties. This research investigates the impact of the activities of the local refiners on their host communities' farmlands, rivers and estuaries. A quantitative research method was adopted in this study through the administration of questionnaires to local stakeholders (chiefs, the youth, farmers, traders, fishermen/fisherwomen and residents of affected communities). Quantitative data was collected from three communities in the Niger Delta with local refineries and the data was analysed using descriptive and inferential (Chi Square and Correlation) methods. The study demonstrates the high impact of the activities of the refiners on farmlands and fishing areas of the host communities and makes recommendations to all stakeholders in the upstream and downstream sectors of the petroleum industry. In addition, recommendations are made to the Nigerian government, on ways to address the impact of local refining on host communities. The present work provides to treat real oily saline wastewater released from drilling oil sites by the use of electrocoagulation technique. Aluminum tubes were utilized as electrodes in a concentric manner to minimize the concentrations of 113400 mg TDS/L, 65623 mg TSS/L, and the ions of 477 mg HCO3/L, 102000 mg Cl/L and 5600 mg Ca/L presented in real oily wastewater under the effect of the operational parameters (the applied current and reaction time) by making use of the central composite rotatable design. The final concentrations of TDS, TSS, HCO3, Cl, and Ca that obtained were 93555 ppm (17.50%), 11011 ppm (83.22%), 189ppm (60.38%), 80000ppm (22%), and 4200 ppm (25%), respectively, under the optimum values of the operational parameters (1.625 Amps and 40 min). In spite of the low removal percentages of some pollutants, the present study proved the ability of this novel designed reactor for treating high saline real oily wastewater in accordance with the operational parameters. This prove the capability of the use of it as a pre-treatment of other conventional methods. Objective This study aims at understanding the dynamic functional brain organization in Accelerated Cognitive Ageing (ACA) in epilepsy. We also assess to which extend the (abnormal) effective connectivity between brain networks correlates with the (estimated) decline in IQ scores observed in the ACA patients. Material and methods Two multi-echo resting-state fMRI scans of 10 ACA patients and 14 age- and education-matched healthy controls were acquired. A task-based fMRI was acquired in-between those two scans, for possible cognitive fatigue effects on reserve capacity. Granger causality (GC), a measure of effective connectivity between brain regions, was applied on 7 major cognitive networks, and group-wise compared, using permutation testing statistics. This was performed on each of the resting-state sessions independently. We assessed the correlation between the cognitive deterioration scores (representing cognitive decline), and the paired-networks granger causality values. Results The cingulate cortex apps hypothesis (CRUNCH) model for ageing. Moreover, the DMN to VAN directed connectivity strongly correlates with the (estimated) decline in the Perceptual Reasoning Index, which is also in line with a recent study on ageing with mild cognitive impairment in elderly, and the posterior-anterior shift in aging (PASA) model. This study therefore supports the idea that the cognitive decline in our patients resembles the decline observed in healthy ageing, but in an accelerated mode. This study also sheds light on the directions of the impaired connectivity between the main networks involved in the deterioration process, which can be helpful for future development of treatment solutions. Background Seaweeds are an important source of bioactive compounds which are applied in various aspects of medicinal investigations. The present study was conducted to investigate cytoxicity (in-vitro and in-vivo) and wound healing activity of different seaweed species in Sri Lanka. Methods Twenty-three seaweed samples, belonging to Phaeophyta (Brown), Chlorophyta (Green) and Rhodophyta (Red) were used for the experiments. Samples were collected from the inter-tidal and the sub-tidal habitats around Sri Lankan coast (Southern, Northern and North-western). Aqueous seaweed extracts were tested for cytotoxic and wound healing activity; in-vitro and in-vivo. To determine toxicity of aqueous seaweed extracts, brine shrimp lethality assay and 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) colorimetric assay on mouse fibroblasts (L929) cell line were performed. Cell migration induction of seaweed extracts was assessed by scratch wound healing assay using L929 cell line. Based on the our previousced in the treatment group compared to the control group. Conclusions Aqueous extracts of selected seaweeds are a significant source of potential compounds with wound healing properties, which might be helpful in the healing of various wounds. This also infers that many species of brown and red seaweeds have the potential of wound healing, specifically, Sargasum illicifolium and Jania adhaereus could be a potential candidate for in-vivo studies related to wound healing and cancer therapy in the near future.
