CD20 is a glycosylated transmembrane protein and is expressed on normal B cells and B cell malignancies. Therapeutic antibodies against CD20 are developed and used in clinic. The understanding of antibody-antigen binding by revealing the epitope is essential for future application to antibody technology. Previously, we developed an anti-human CD20 monoclonal antibody, C20Mab-60 (IgG2a, kappa), using the Cell-Based Immunization and Screening (CBIS). C20Mab-60 can be used for flow cytometry, Western blot, and immunohistochemical analyses. In this study, we examined the critical epitope of C20Mab-60 using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) with synthesized peptides. We performed ELISA with deletion mutants, and C20Mab-60 reacted to the 160-179 amino acids sequence of CD20. Next, we analyzed the reaction to 20 point mutants, and C20Mab-60 did not recognize the alanine-substituted peptides of N171A, P172A, S173A, and E174A. The results indicate that the binding epitope of C20Mab-60, developed by CBIS, includes Asn171, Pro172, Ser173, and Glu174 of CD20.

To identify which clinical and technical parameters affect patient exposure and peak skin dose (PSD) and to establish dose reference levels (DRL) per clinical complexity level in IC procedures.

Validation and Estimation of Radiation skin Dose in Interventional Cardiology (VERIDIC) project analyzed prospectively collected patient data from eight European countries and 12 hospitals where percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), chronic total occlusion PCI (CTO), and transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) procedures were performed. A total of 62 clinical complexity parameters and 31 technical parameters were collected, univariate regressions were performed to identify those parameters affecting patient exposure and define DRL accordingly.

Patient exposure as well as clinical and technical parameters were collected for a total of 534 PCI, 219 CTO, and 209 TAVI. For PCI procedures, body mass index (BMI), number of stents ≥2, and total stent length >28 mm were the most prominent clinical parameters, which increased the PSD value. For CTO, these were total stent length >57 mm, BMI, and previous anterograde or retrograde technique that failed in the same session. For TAVI, these were male sex, BMI, and number of diseased vessels. DRL values for Kerma-area product (

This case highlights the importance of radiographic imaging in newly diagnosed vocal fold paralysis, and underscores the principle that a diagnosis is not idiopathic until all sources have been ruled out.Rodents are known reservoir hosts for a number of pathogens that can spillover into humans and cause disease. These threats are likely to be elevated in informal urban settlements (i.e., slums), where rodent and human densities are often high, rodents live in close proximity to humans, and human knowledge of disease risks and access to health care is often limited. While recent research attention has focused on zoonotic risks posed by urban rodents in major cities around the world, informal urban settlements have received far less attention. Here we report on a study in which samples were collected from 195 commensal rodents and 124 febrile human patients in the Kibera informal settlement in Nairobi, Kenya (one of the largest informal urban settlements in the world). Using immunofluorescence assays, samples were screened for antibodies against common rodent-borne zoonotic virus groups, namely orthopoxviruses, arenaviruses, and hantaviruses. We detected antibodies against orthopoxviruses in rodents (4.1% positive) and antibodies in humans against orthopoxviruses, arenaviruses, and hantaviruses (4.8%, 3.2%, and 8.1% positive, respectively). No rodents had antibodies against arenaviruses or hantaviruses. These results provide strong evidence for the circulation of zoonotic viruses in rodents and humans in Kibera urban settlement, but discordance between viruses detected in host groups indicates that other species or taxa may also serve as reservoirs for these zoonotic viruses or that humans testing positive could have been exposed outside of the Kibera settlement. More broadly, this study highlights the threat posed by zoonotic viruses in informal urban settlements and the need to mitigate human exposure risks.Background The endemic character of Rift Valley fever (RVF) disease points toward an interepidemic reservoir. Although not yet identified, bats and rodents may be implicated in RVF virus (RVFV) epidemiology. In this study, we investigated the putative role of Egyptian frugivorous and insectivorous bats in RVFV epidemiology in Egypt. Methods From 2019 to 2021, 200 bats of two different species from six Egyptian governorates were tested for phleboviruses using real-time RT-PCR (rRT-PCR) and sequence analysis. Results Screening through rRT-PCR showed evidence of the RVFV genome only in insectivorous bats. Partial sequence and phylogenetic analysis based on S and M genome segments showed that these viruses are genetically similar to those circulating (clade A) in livestock and humans during previously reported RVFV outbreaks in 1977/78 and 2003 in Egypt. Conclusions Our molecular data suggest that the bat Pipistrellus deserti could play a role in RVFV ecology in Egypt.In the United States, Dermacentor variabilis and Dermacentor andersoni are considered key vectors for Rickettsia rickettsii, the causative agent of Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Through regional surveillance, a wide diversity of Rickettsia spp. have been documented in D. variabilis, and Dermacentor spp. has been suggested as potential vectors for various other pathogens, including Babesia spp. and Ehrlichia canis. To better define the prevalence and diversity of pathogens in Dermacentor spp. across the United States, 848 ticks collected from dogs and cats in 44/50 states in 2018-2019 were tested by PCR for Rickettsia spp.-specific 17 kDa and ompA gene fragments; a subset of Dermacentor spp. was also tested with PCR, targeting fragments of the 18S and large subunit region rRNA genes of Babesia spp. and 16S rRNA genes of E. canis. Rickettsia spp. was identified in 12.5% (106/848) of ticks. Species detected include Rickettsia montanensis (n = 64 ticks), Rickettsia bellii (n = 15 ticks), Rickettsia rhipicephali (n = 13 ticks), Rickettsia peacockii (n = 8 ticks), Rickettsia amblyommatis (n = 3 ticks), Rickettsia cooleyi (n = 1 tick), and unclassified Rickettsia spp. (n = 2 ticks). Ticks with R. montanensis and R. bellii were submitted from every U.S. region; R. rhipicephali was predominantly detected in ticks from the southern half of the United States, and all R. peacockii-positive ticks were D. andersoni that originated from the Rocky Mountain states. Ehrlichia canis was not detected in any Dermacentor spp., and Babesia conradae was detected in two Dermacentor albipictus. Because most ticks had fed on dogs or cats before submission, these findings do not implicate a given Dermacentor sp. as a primary vector of these agents, but in regard to Rickettsia spp., the data do support other published work showing D. variabilis harbors a diversity of Rickettsia species with unknown implications for animal and human health.Background Camel-to-human transmission of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) was confirmed as a cause of primary infection in humans. There is a dearth of information regarding the behavior of the virus in camels and the mode of spread among them under natural conditions. The aim of this study was to monitor exposure of camels to the MERS-CoV under field conditions. Methods From January 1 to November 30, 2015, a secluded herd of 20 pregnant female camels and their neonate calves was established. Nasal and rectal swabs were collected from calves daily for 90 days after birth, then weekly until the end of the study. Nasal and rectal samples were collected from the dams at outset and then weekly until the end of the study. The samples were tested with rtRT-PCR to detect the MERS-CoV RNA. Results All purchased pregnant camels were MERS-CoV RNA negative at outset. Nineteen dams and 15 calves completed the study. Seven (46.7%) of the 15 calves developed a rise in rectal temperature (39-40°C), shivering, rhinitis, anorexia, and general weakness at a mean ± standard deviation of 18.9 ± 4.9 days of age and their MERS-CoV RNA test was positive on the first day of illness. Three of the seven infected calves died 14 ± 9.1 days postonset of illness at age 17, 14, and 46 days, respectively. The remaining four infected calves fully recovered and they were MERS-CoV RNA positive for 17.5 ± 8.8 days. Four (21.1%) of the 19 dams had positive tests; three dams had no clinical signs, whereas the fourth dam exhibited signs not compatible with MERS-CoV infection and died three days after the positive test, 33 days after parturition. All MERS-CoV infections occurred within 22 days. Outbreaks of H5N1 HPAIV struck poultry in Ukraine in 2005. In 2016, A H5N8 clade 2.3.4.4b HPAIV outbreaks occurred in wild and domestic birds in Ukraine concurrently with outbreaks in Central Europe, Russia, and the Middle East. We report outbreaks of HPAI in domestic backyard poultry in (2016-2017) in the southern region of Ukraine, in proximity to mass gathering sites for migratory waterfowl including mute swans (Cygnus olor). All eight genome segments of three novel H5N8 HPAIV isolated in November 2016 from two domestic backyard chickens (Gallus gallus) and one backyard mallard duck (Anas platyrhynchos) found dead of HPAI in Azov-Black Sea region of Ukraine were cladistically related to H5N8 2.3.4.4b HPAI viruses isolated from wild shelduck (Tadorna tadorna) and white-fronted goose (Anser albifrons) in Askania Nova Biopreserve (Kherson district, Ukraine) in 2016-2017 and to other contemporary H5N8 HPAIV strains sequenced from wild birds and poultry in Eurasia. Amino acid variations in hemagglutinin were outside of the polybasic cleavage site (PLREKRRKR/GLF), and D224G suggested avian-like receptor binding specificity; neuraminidase did not have mutations characteristic of oseltamivir drug resistance. Outbreaks of HPAI in Ukraine highlight the continual need for biosurveillance and genomic sequencing of avian influenza viruses along wild bird flyways and interfaces with domestic poultry in Eurasia.

Ageing brings alterations in body composition, as skeletal muscle gradually declines and accumulation of adipose tissue accompanies it. Although sarcopenia (S) and obesity (O) were separately reported to be associated with frailty and poor physical performance, whether they bring more detrimental or favorable effect when they coexist (i.e. sarcopenic obesity; SO) is an issue needs clarification. We aimed to study the associations of SO and S alone with frailty and poor physical performance, by using probable S definition.

This was a retrospective, cross-sectional study including community dwelling older adults who were ≥60 years old and admitted to the outpatient clinic of a tertiary hospital between 2012 and 2020. We measured handgrip strength via hand dynamometer and defined decreased muscle strength as probable S. We performed bioimpedance analysis to evaluate body composition and used fat percentile method to define obesity. We assessed nutritional status via Mini-Nutritional Assessment-Short Form, fred TUG risk.

Although SO and S groups demonstrated similar risks, obesity accompanying sarcopenia might show a favorable trend in terms of frailty and poor physical performance, compared to sarcopenia alone. Longitudinal studies are needed to reveal whether an obesity paradox exists for frailty and physical performance in older adults.

Hypophosphatemia during critical illness has been associated with adverse outcome. The reintroduction of enteral or parenteral nutrition, leading to refeeding hypophosphatemia (RFH), has been presented as potential risk factor. We investigated the occurrence of early RFH, its association with clinical outcome, and the impact of early parenteral nutrition (PN) on the development of early RFH in pediatric critical illness.

This is a secondary analysis of the PEPaNIC randomized controlled trial (N=1440), which showed that withholding supplemental parenteral nutrition (PN) for 1 week (late-PN) in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) accelerated recovery and reduced new infections compared to early-PN (<24h). Patients with renal replacement therapy or unavailable phosphate concentrations were excluded from this analysis. Early RFH was defined as serum/plasma phosphate <0.65mmol/L and a drop of >0.16mmol/L within 3 days of admission to the PICU. The association between baseline characteristics and sphate concentrations in patients, especially of those at risk for early RFH.

Difficulties during endotracheal intubation, occur in 3-8% of procedures and are among the principal causes of anesthetic-related morbidity and mortality. Endotracheal intubation can be challenging in obese patients due to an array of anatomic and physiologic factors. Double lumen tubes (DLTs), the most commonly used airway technique to facilitate anatomic isolation of the lungs for one lung ventilation. However, DLTs can be difficult to properly position and are also more likely to cause airway injuries and bleeding when compared to conventional single lumen tubes. We investigated the association between BMI and difficult tracheal DLT intubation.

Castleman disease (CD) encompasses a spectrum of rare disorders with characteristic histopathological features. Unicentric CD (UCD) is a benign, local hyperplasia of lymphoid tissue that is usually curable. Multicentric CD (MCD) manifests as a potentially life-threatening systemic disease with complex symptomatology which is mostly due to an overproduction of interleukin-6 (IL-6) or dysregulation of IL-6-related signaling pathways. From a therapeutic perspective, it is important to distinguish idiopathic MCD (iMCD) from those cases that are associated with the human herpesvirus-8 (HHV-8 + MCD).

During recent years, it has become increasingly clear that even HHV-8-negative MCD is not a homogeneous entity and that there are clinically distinct variants. International consensus guidelines for diagnosis and treatment have been developed for iMCD and UCD.

In this study, an object-based spectra comparison (OBSC) approach was proposed to extract emulsified oil slicks from Balikpapan Bay, Indonesia, using optical imagery from Sentinel-2 Multispectral Instrument (MSI) and PlanetScope. The OBSC approach utilizes the spectral signatures of oil emulsion to develop emulsified oil index and normalized emulsified oil index to identify potentially emulsified oil objects from MSI and PlanetScope, respectively. Reflectance spectra of the potential objects were compared with those from dynamically-selected nearby waters to rule out false-positive detections, accounting for the varying water optical properties in the estuary. This OBSC approach performed well in extracting emulsified oil slicks from optical images. Moreover, multiple sensor capabilities for oil detection were compared, and requirements for detection and discrimination of oil spills in the coastal estuary environment were further discussed.Mangroves are often exposed to heavy metals that accumulate in the food chain, generate toxicity to mangrove plants and affect microbial diversity. This study determined the abundance of genes associated with resistance and tolerance to heavy metals in the rhizosphere microbiome of Avicennia germinans from a semi-arid mangrove of La Guajira-Colombia by metagenomics and genomics approach. Twenty-eight genes associated with tolerance and 49 genes related to resistance to heavy metals were detected. Genes associated with tolerance and resistance to Cu, especially cusA and copA, were the most abundant. The highest number of genes for tolerance and resistance were for Zn and Co, respectively. The isolate Vibrio fluvialis showed the ability to tolerate Cu, Ni, Zn, and Cd. This work used a complementary approach of metagenomics and genomics to characterize the potential of mangrove microorganisms to tolerate and resist heavy metals and the influence of salinity on their abundance.The present study aims to analyze the level and total toxicity of the most common pollutants in surface sediments and assess their impact on the occurrence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the Sea of Azov. Biotesting using the whole-cell bacterial lux-biosensors showed high integral toxicity of surface sediments and the presence of genotoxicants and substances that cause oxidative stress and protein damage. Using cluster analysis, it was shown that the distribution of pollutants in the Sea of Azov depends on the type of surface sediments. The relative abundance and distribution of 14 ARGs in surface sediments were shown. Principle component analyses results suggest that non-corresponding contaminants do not exert direct influence on the ARGs abundance in the surface sediments of the Sea of Azov. Thus, the need to investigate the significance of non-corresponding pollutants in the selection and distribution of ARGs in the aquatic environment remains a pressing problem.The coastal in-situ capping method can sequester contaminated sediment and suppress sediment resuspension. Few studies have investigated the suppression of sediment resuspension induced by calcium eluted from in-situ capping materials. We investigated the physicochemical suppression of calcium on sediment resuspension. A resuspension experiment was conducted in an annular flume using coastal sediment mixed with 0 g (CSM0), 1 g (CSM1), 5 g (CSM5), and 10 g (CSM10) of Ca(OH)2 under a stepwise increase in bottom shear stress. Calcium enhanced sediment erosion resistance, decreasing suspended sediment concentrations. Exponentially increased SSC in CSM0 and CSM1 was three times higher than that in linearly increased CSM10. Viscosity in CSM10 was approximately three times higher than that in CSM0 and CSM1. Calcium-induced cation exchange increased sediment viscosity via sediment structural rearrangement, calcium-silicate-hydrate production, and the development of larger aggregates. Consequently, calcium suppressed sediment resuspension by physiochemically changing the sediment properties.This work builds upon recent developments in the field of second dimensional (2D) retention indices (RI) for use in comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC×GC), expanding application to the most commonly used "normal" orthogonality column configuration, where 2D RI are rarely employed. Initially, one dimensional retention indices for 80 wastewater pollutants were determined by GC-MS on a mid-polar ZB-50 column. In order to determine the 2D RIs for peaks detected in wastewater extracts separated by GC×GC -MS, a single injection of a ten-compound standard mix allowed the construction of model-generated isovolatility curves. These curves were used for the determination of 2D RIs of compounds initially identified on the basis of the mass spectral match factor and 1D RIs. Good agreements (average deviation of 1.7%) were observed between the calculated 2D RIs and the measured reference RIs for these compounds. These results show that this approach provides an additional level of confidence for the identification of compounds detected in GC×GC-MS and demonstrates the potential of this approach for improved compound identification in non-targeted analysis.

Diagnosing and treating hypercalcemia during pregnancy can be challenging due to both the physiological changes in calcium homeostasis and the underlying cause for the hypercalcemia. During pregnancy and lactation there is increased mobilization of calcium in the mother to meet the fetus' calcium requirements. Here we discuss the diagnostic challenges, management, and patient perspective of hypercalcemia during pregnancy in two particular cases and in other rare conditions causing hypercalcemia.Patients' perceptions on quality of care and gaps in diagnosis/management of rare endocrine diseases (RED) were collected in a 21-item questionnaire, answered on-line in the patients' language. There were 598 (66% females) responses from 29 countries reflecting pituitary, adrenal, thyroid, parathyroid, gonadal, genetic and autoimmune diseases. While in 36% a diagnosis was made in 50% a specialist/specific treatment was available within 1 month; 60% were satisfied with current treatment. Most (59-67%) would have liked access to psychological support, social worker, dietician or physiotherapist/rehabilitation specialists. Half were satisfied with information received, treatment and health care follow-up; 87% contacted patient/support groups; 78% agreed that "The personal limitations related to the disease, impact on my everyday quality of life". Conclusion Diagnostic delay in RED is still unsatisfactory in Europe, as well as specific needs impacting QoL.
Recent advances in the field of immunotherapy have significantly prolonged the survival of patients with aggressive carcinomas, but the role of immunotherapy in neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) remains to be elucidated.

We report a patient diagnosed with a well-differentiated grade 3 pancreatic NEN (pNEN) and type 3 liver metastases who received compassionate nivolumab as a fifth line treatment and achieved a durable partial response of more than 34 months. We have performed a systematic review to the literature on tumor microenvironment and potential biomarkers in the field of NEN including the tumor mutational burden, the tumor infiltrating lymphocytes, the programmed cell death ligand 1, and the mismatch repair system. The potential role of the immune system modulation together with a critical assessment of the recent phase II clinical studies in NEN including monotherapy with anti-PD-1/PD-L1 monoclonal antibodies, and combination therapies including anti-PD-1 along with anti-CTLA-4 monoclonal antibodies are also provided.

To determine agreement in keratometric readings obtained using rotating Scheimpflug imaging with Pentacam, biograph with Lenstar LS900, and Topcon KR-8100P auto-keratorefractometer in eyes with different stages of keratoconus.

A total of 89 eyes of 58 patients with keratoconus were examined in this study, retrospectively. The eyes were divided into two groups mild group (group 1 42 eyes) (Amsler-Krumeich stage 1) and moderate-to-severe group (group 2 47 eyes) (Amsler-Krumeich stage 2, 3, 4). The keratometric readings measured using the Pentacam Scheimpflug system, Lenstar LS900, and Topcon KR-8100P auto-keratorefractometer were compared between the groups. The effects of the measurements of anterior chamber depth, Q value, axial length, central corneal thickness (CCT), and maximum value of keratometry (Kmax) on the differences of devices for keratometric readings were investigated.

The mean values of the keratometric readings obtained using the Lenstar were steeper than with the Pentacam and Topcon, esp stages of keratoconus. The keratometric readings of Lenstar were found steeper than the other devices with increasing grades of keratoconus. None of these devices can be used interchangeably in moderate-to-severe stages of keratoconus.
To clarify the clinical features of uveitis in elderly patients in central Tokyo.

We retrospectively identified 1424 patients with uveitis who visited the Uveitis Clinic of the University of Tokyo Hospital between January 2013 and December 2018. The patients were categorized into two groups based on their ages at the time of disease onset patients aged 65years or older were included in Group A, whereas those younger than 65years were included in Group B. The etiological classification of uveitis and its causes were investigated for each group.

Mercury content was studied in Bay Sivash (the Sea of Azov), the world's largest hypersaline lagoon with a strong salinity gradient from 36 to 90 g l-1. The dissolved mercury compounds ranged from 120 to 250 ng l-1, Hg varied from 60 to 450 ng l-1 in the suspended matter, and total mercury in the water ranged from 200 to 600 ng l-1. Salinity and the total suspended matter had practically no effect on the amount of dissolved and suspended forms of mercury separately, but their growth significantly increased total mercury content in water. Only the concentration of dissolved forms of mercury in water significantly correlated with dissolved organic matter. The Hg concentration in the bottom sediments averaged 13.8 ng g-1 wet weight. Both high salinity and human activities on the Sivash drainage area are responsible for high Hg content in lagoon water.Pollution of the atmosphere is known that may lead to adverse obstetric outcomes, including fetal growth restriction, gestational hypertension, and preeclampsia. Such disorders are correlated with imbalances in angiogenic factors, which may also be involved in the pathological mechanism as the pollutants impact placental and maternal physiology. In the first trimester of gestation, this study assessed the outcomes of personal maternal short period exposure to air pollution on soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase 1 (sFlt1) and placental growth factor (PLGF) of pregnant women blood concentrations. This was a cross-sectional study, held in the city of São Paulo, Brazil, and conducted with low-risk pregnant women, who carried personal passive nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and ozone (O3) monitors for about a few days preceding the ultrasound evaluation, and on this day, the venous blood sample was collected to measure the angiogenic factors sFlt1 and PLGF and their ratio (sFlt1/PLGF) by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). By means of multiple regression models, the effect of the studied pollutants on the log-transformed concentrations of the angiogenic factors was evaluated. One hundred thirty-one patients were included. The log of the sFlt1/PLGF ratio increased with rising NO2 levels (p = 0.021 and beta = 0.206), and the log of the PLGF concentration showed a negative correlation with NO2 (p = 0.008 and beta = - 0.234). NO2, an indicator of the levels of primary air pollutants, presented significant positive correlation with an increased sFlt1/PLGF ratio and diminished PLGF levels, which may reflect an antiangiogenic state generated by air pollution exposure.Antibiotic resistance is a mushrooming pandemic at national and international levels which if not controlled at this very moment, can lead to global problems. Main reason for emerging bacterial resistance is repeated exposure of bacteria to antimicrobial agents and access of bacteria to increasingly large pools of antimicrobial resistance genes in mixed bacterial populations. A total of 51 villages were sampled in the current study contributing to a total of 153 farms. A total of 612 samples comprising 153 each of raw pooled milk samples, slurry, animal drinking water and human drinking water were gathered from small, medium and large farms located in all seven tehsils of Ludhiana district of Punjab. In addition to that, 37 samples of village pond water were also collected from the targeted villages. Out of total 153 slurry, raw pooled milk samples, animal drinking water and human drinking water samples (each), the prevalence of 24.8%, 60%, 26.7% and 16.3% was found for E. coli respectively. On the other hand, for Klebsiella, the overall prevalence of 19.6%, 51%, 20.2% and 5.8% was found from slurry, raw pooled milk samples, animal drinking water and human drinking water respectively. In all matrices, the comparative frequency of resistance genes in positive isolates of E. coli and K. pneumoniae was tetA > tetB > tetC, qnrS > qnrB > qnrA, sulII > sulI > sulIII. The highest proportion of resistance genes was found in slurry (193 genes) followed by milk (71 genes). The overall pattern of resistant genes was tetA > sulII > qnrS. In conclusion, data from the present study suggested that commensal E. coli and Klebsiella may act as reservoirs of antimicrobial drug resistance genes which may be mobilised into human populations and untreated animal waste may be considered an important source of resistant bacteria leading to environmental pollution.This study examines the role of technological innovation and economic progress on environmental pollution by using STRIPAT and EKC theoretical frameworks in 25 developing Asian countries from the period 1998 to 2019. For technological advancement, the energy intensity has been used to gauge how much of the quantity of energy is employed to produce the additional unit of gross domestic product at domestic level. Therefore, the volume of the energy used in the production process is highly important as it is documented through the energy intensity. To capture the impact of innovation, the sum of total patent applications and trademark applications for the sampled countries has been used. This study applied second-generation unit root and panel cointegration techniques to estimate the results. To estimate the long-run relationship of variables and the cross-sectional interdependence, Pedroni Residual and Westerlund Cointegration tests are applied. Further, the Hausman-Taylor-type test has been used to check the efficiency of the pool mean group (PMG).

CD20 is a glycosylated transmembrane protein and is expressed on normal B cells and B cell malignancies. Therapeutic antibodies against CD20 are developed and used in clinic. The understanding of antibody-antigen binding by revealing the epitope is essential for future application to antibody technology. Previously, we developed an anti-human CD20 monoclonal antibody, C20Mab-60 (IgG2a, kappa), using the Cell-Based Immunization and Screening (CBIS). C20Mab-60 can be used for flow cytometry, Western blot, and immunohistochemical analyses. In this study, we examined the critical epitope of C20Mab-60 using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) with synthesized peptides. We performed ELISA with deletion mutants, and C20Mab-60 reacted to the 160-179 amino acids sequence of CD20. Next, we analyzed the reaction to 20 point mutants, and C20Mab-60 did not recognize the alanine-substituted peptides of N171A, P172A, S173A, and E174A. The results indicate that the binding epitope of C20Mab-60, developed by CBIS, includes Asn171, Pro172, Ser173, and Glu174 of CD20.

To identify which clinical and technical parameters affect patient exposure and peak skin dose (PSD) and to establish dose reference levels (DRL) per clinical complexity level in IC procedures.

Validation and Estimation of Radiation skin Dose in Interventional Cardiology (VERIDIC) project analyzed prospectively collected patient data from eight European countries and 12 hospitals where percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), chronic total occlusion PCI (CTO), and transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) procedures were performed. A total of 62 clinical complexity parameters and 31 technical parameters were collected, univariate regressions were performed to identify those parameters affecting patient exposure and define DRL accordingly.

Patient exposure as well as clinical and technical parameters were collected for a total of 534 PCI, 219 CTO, and 209 TAVI. For PCI procedures, body mass index (BMI), number of stents ≥2, and total stent length >28 mm were the most prominent clinical parameters, which increased the PSD value. For CTO, these were total stent length >57 mm, BMI, and previous anterograde or retrograde technique that failed in the same session. For TAVI, these were male sex, BMI, and number of diseased vessels. DRL values for Kerma-area product (

This case highlights the importance of radiographic imaging in newly diagnosed vocal fold paralysis, and underscores the principle that a diagnosis is not idiopathic until all sources have been ruled out.Rodents are known reservoir hosts for a number of pathogens that can spillover into humans and cause disease. These threats are likely to be elevated in informal urban settlements (i.e., slums), where rodent and human densities are often high, rodents live in close proximity to humans, and human knowledge of disease risks and access to health care is often limited. While recent research attention has focused on zoonotic risks posed by urban rodents in major cities around the world, informal urban settlements have received far less attention. Here we report on a study in which samples were collected from 195 commensal rodents and 124 febrile human patients in the Kibera informal settlement in Nairobi, Kenya (one of the largest informal urban settlements in the world). Using immunofluorescence assays, samples were screened for antibodies against common rodent-borne zoonotic virus groups, namely orthopoxviruses, arenaviruses, and hantaviruses. We detected antibodies against orthopoxviruses in rodents (4.1% positive) and antibodies in humans against orthopoxviruses, arenaviruses, and hantaviruses (4.8%, 3.2%, and 8.1% positive, respectively). No rodents had antibodies against arenaviruses or hantaviruses. These results provide strong evidence for the circulation of zoonotic viruses in rodents and humans in Kibera urban settlement, but discordance between viruses detected in host groups indicates that other species or taxa may also serve as reservoirs for these zoonotic viruses or that humans testing positive could have been exposed outside of the Kibera settlement. More broadly, this study highlights the threat posed by zoonotic viruses in informal urban settlements and the need to mitigate human exposure risks.Background The endemic character of Rift Valley fever (RVF) disease points toward an interepidemic reservoir. Although not yet identified, bats and rodents may be implicated in RVF virus (RVFV) epidemiology. In this study, we investigated the putative role of Egyptian frugivorous and insectivorous bats in RVFV epidemiology in Egypt. Methods From 2019 to 2021, 200 bats of two different species from six Egyptian governorates were tested for phleboviruses using real-time RT-PCR (rRT-PCR) and sequence analysis. Results Screening through rRT-PCR showed evidence of the RVFV genome only in insectivorous bats. Partial sequence and phylogenetic analysis based on S and M genome segments showed that these viruses are genetically similar to those circulating (clade A) in livestock and humans during previously reported RVFV outbreaks in 1977/78 and 2003 in Egypt. Conclusions Our molecular data suggest that the bat Pipistrellus deserti could play a role in RVFV ecology in Egypt.In the United States, Dermacentor variabilis and Dermacentor andersoni are considered key vectors for Rickettsia rickettsii, the causative agent of Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Through regional surveillance, a wide diversity of Rickettsia spp. have been documented in D. variabilis, and Dermacentor spp. has been suggested as potential vectors for various other pathogens, including Babesia spp. and Ehrlichia canis. To better define the prevalence and diversity of pathogens in Dermacentor spp. across the United States, 848 ticks collected from dogs and cats in 44/50 states in 2018-2019 were tested by PCR for Rickettsia spp.-specific 17 kDa and ompA gene fragments; a subset of Dermacentor spp. was also tested with PCR, targeting fragments of the 18S and large subunit region rRNA genes of Babesia spp. and 16S rRNA genes of E. canis. Rickettsia spp. was identified in 12.5% (106/848) of ticks. Species detected include Rickettsia montanensis (n = 64 ticks), Rickettsia bellii (n = 15 ticks), Rickettsia rhipicephali (n = 13 ticks), Rickettsia peacockii (n = 8 ticks), Rickettsia amblyommatis (n = 3 ticks), Rickettsia cooleyi (n = 1 tick), and unclassified Rickettsia spp. (n = 2 ticks). Ticks with R. montanensis and R. bellii were submitted from every U.S. region; R. rhipicephali was predominantly detected in ticks from the southern half of the United States, and all R. peacockii-positive ticks were D. andersoni that originated from the Rocky Mountain states. Ehrlichia canis was not detected in any Dermacentor spp., and Babesia conradae was detected in two Dermacentor albipictus. Because most ticks had fed on dogs or cats before submission, these findings do not implicate a given Dermacentor sp. as a primary vector of these agents, but in regard to Rickettsia spp., the data do support other published work showing D. variabilis harbors a diversity of Rickettsia species with unknown implications for animal and human health.Background Camel-to-human transmission of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) was confirmed as a cause of primary infection in humans. There is a dearth of information regarding the behavior of the virus in camels and the mode of spread among them under natural conditions. The aim of this study was to monitor exposure of camels to the MERS-CoV under field conditions. Methods From January 1 to November 30, 2015, a secluded herd of 20 pregnant female camels and their neonate calves was established. Nasal and rectal swabs were collected from calves daily for 90 days after birth, then weekly until the end of the study. Nasal and rectal samples were collected from the dams at outset and then weekly until the end of the study. The samples were tested with rtRT-PCR to detect the MERS-CoV RNA. Results All purchased pregnant camels were MERS-CoV RNA negative at outset. Nineteen dams and 15 calves completed the study. Seven (46.7%) of the 15 calves developed a rise in rectal temperature (39-40°C), shivering, rhinitis, anorexia, and general weakness at a mean ± standard deviation of 18.9 ± 4.9 days of age and their MERS-CoV RNA test was positive on the first day of illness. Three of the seven infected calves died 14 ± 9.1 days postonset of illness at age 17, 14, and 46 days, respectively. The remaining four infected calves fully recovered and they were MERS-CoV RNA positive for 17.5 ± 8.8 days. Four (21.1%) of the 19 dams had positive tests; three dams had no clinical signs, whereas the fourth dam exhibited signs not compatible with MERS-CoV infection and died three days after the positive test, 33 days after parturition. All MERS-CoV infections occurred within 22 days. We report outbreaks of HPAI in domestic backyard poultry in (2016-2017) in the southern region of Ukraine, in proximity to mass gathering sites for migratory waterfowl including mute swans (Cygnus olor). All eight genome segments of three novel H5N8 HPAIV isolated in November 2016 from two domestic backyard chickens (Gallus gallus) and one backyard mallard duck (Anas platyrhynchos) found dead of HPAI in Azov-Black Sea region of Ukraine were cladistically related to H5N8 2.3.4.4b HPAI viruses isolated from wild shelduck (Tadorna tadorna) and white-fronted goose (Anser albifrons) in Askania Nova Biopreserve (Kherson district, Ukraine) in 2016-2017 and to other contemporary H5N8 HPAIV strains sequenced from wild birds and poultry in Eurasia. Amino acid variations in hemagglutinin were outside of the polybasic cleavage site (PLREKRRKR/GLF), and D224G suggested avian-like receptor binding specificity; neuraminidase did not have mutations characteristic of oseltamivir drug resistance. Outbreaks of HPAI in Ukraine highlight the continual need for biosurveillance and genomic sequencing of avian influenza viruses along wild bird flyways and interfaces with domestic poultry in Eurasia.

Ageing brings alterations in body composition, as skeletal muscle gradually declines and accumulation of adipose tissue accompanies it. Although sarcopenia (S) and obesity (O) were separately reported to be associated with frailty and poor physical performance, whether they bring more detrimental or favorable effect when they coexist (i.e. sarcopenic obesity; SO) is an issue needs clarification. We aimed to study the associations of SO and S alone with frailty and poor physical performance, by using probable S definition.

This was a retrospective, cross-sectional study including community dwelling older adults who were ≥60 years old and admitted to the outpatient clinic of a tertiary hospital between 2012 and 2020. We measured handgrip strength via hand dynamometer and defined decreased muscle strength as probable S. We performed bioimpedance analysis to evaluate body composition and used fat percentile method to define obesity. We assessed nutritional status via Mini-Nutritional Assessment-Short Form, fred TUG risk.

Although SO and S groups demonstrated similar risks, obesity accompanying sarcopenia might show a favorable trend in terms of frailty and poor physical performance, compared to sarcopenia alone. Longitudinal studies are needed to reveal whether an obesity paradox exists for frailty and physical performance in older adults.

Hypophosphatemia during critical illness has been associated with adverse outcome. The reintroduction of enteral or parenteral nutrition, leading to refeeding hypophosphatemia (RFH), has been presented as potential risk factor. We investigated the occurrence of early RFH, its association with clinical outcome, and the impact of early parenteral nutrition (PN) on the development of early RFH in pediatric critical illness.

This is a secondary analysis of the PEPaNIC randomized controlled trial (N=1440), which showed that withholding supplemental parenteral nutrition (PN) for 1 week (late-PN) in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) accelerated recovery and reduced new infections compared to early-PN (<24h). Patients with renal replacement therapy or unavailable phosphate concentrations were excluded from this analysis. Early RFH was defined as serum/plasma phosphate <0.65mmol/L and a drop of >0.16mmol/L within 3 days of admission to the PICU. The association between baseline characteristics and sphate concentrations in patients, especially of those at risk for early RFH.

Endotracheal intubation can be challenging in obese patients due to an array of anatomic and physiologic factors. Double lumen tubes (DLTs), the most commonly used airway technique to facilitate anatomic isolation of the lungs for one lung ventilation. However, DLTs can be difficult to properly position and are also more likely to cause airway injuries and bleeding when compared to conventional single lumen tubes. Castleman disease (CD) encompasses a spectrum of rare disorders with characteristic histopathological features. Unicentric CD (UCD) is a benign, local hyperplasia of lymphoid tissue that is usually curable. Multicentric CD (MCD) manifests as a potentially life-threatening systemic disease with complex symptomatology which is mostly due to an overproduction of interleukin-6 (IL-6) or dysregulation of IL-6-related signaling pathways. From a therapeutic perspective, it is important to distinguish idiopathic MCD (iMCD) from those cases that are associated with the human herpesvirus-8 (HHV-8 + MCD).

During recent years, it has become increasingly clear that even HHV-8-negative MCD is not a homogeneous entity and that there are clinically distinct variants. International consensus guidelines for diagnosis and treatment have been developed for iMCD and UCD.

In this study, an object-based spectra comparison (OBSC) approach was proposed to extract emulsified oil slicks from Balikpapan Bay, Indonesia, using optical imagery from Sentinel-2 Multispectral Instrument (MSI) and PlanetScope. The OBSC approach utilizes the spectral signatures of oil emulsion to develop emulsified oil index and normalized emulsified oil index to identify potentially emulsified oil objects from MSI and PlanetScope, respectively. Reflectance spectra of the potential objects were compared with those from dynamically-selected nearby waters to rule out false-positive detections, accounting for the varying water optical properties in the estuary. This OBSC approach performed well in extracting emulsified oil slicks from optical images. Moreover, multiple sensor capabilities for oil detection were compared, and requirements for detection and discrimination of oil spills in the coastal estuary environment were further discussed.Mangroves are often exposed to heavy metals that accumulate in the food chain, generate toxicity to mangrove plants and affect microbial diversity. This study determined the abundance of genes associated with resistance and tolerance to heavy metals in the rhizosphere microbiome of Avicennia germinans from a semi-arid mangrove of La Guajira-Colombia by metagenomics and genomics approach. Twenty-eight genes associated with tolerance and 49 genes related to resistance to heavy metals were detected. Genes associated with tolerance and resistance to Cu, especially cusA and copA, were the most abundant. The highest number of genes for tolerance and resistance were for Zn and Co, respectively. The isolate Vibrio fluvialis showed the ability to tolerate Cu, Ni, Zn, and Cd. This work used a complementary approach of metagenomics and genomics to characterize the potential of mangrove microorganisms to tolerate and resist heavy metals and the influence of salinity on their abundance.The present study aims to analyze the level and total toxicity of the most common pollutants in surface sediments and assess their impact on the occurrence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the Sea of Azov. Biotesting using the whole-cell bacterial lux-biosensors showed high integral toxicity of surface sediments and the presence of genotoxicants and substances that cause oxidative stress and protein damage. Using cluster analysis, it was shown that the distribution of pollutants in the Sea of Azov depends on the type of surface sediments. The relative abundance and distribution of 14 ARGs in surface sediments were shown. Principle component analyses results suggest that non-corresponding contaminants do not exert direct influence on the ARGs abundance in the surface sediments of the Sea of Azov. Thus, the need to investigate the significance of non-corresponding pollutants in the selection and distribution of ARGs in the aquatic environment remains a pressing problem.The coastal in-situ capping method can sequester contaminated sediment and suppress sediment resuspension. Few studies have investigated the suppression of sediment resuspension induced by calcium eluted from in-situ capping materials. We investigated the physicochemical suppression of calcium on sediment resuspension. A resuspension experiment was conducted in an annular flume using coastal sediment mixed with 0 g (CSM0), 1 g (CSM1), 5 g (CSM5), and 10 g (CSM10) of Ca(OH)2 under a stepwise increase in bottom shear stress. Calcium enhanced sediment erosion resistance, decreasing suspended sediment concentrations. Exponentially increased SSC in CSM0 and CSM1 was three times higher than that in linearly increased CSM10. Viscosity in CSM10 was approximately three times higher than that in CSM0 and CSM1. Calcium-induced cation exchange increased sediment viscosity via sediment structural rearrangement, calcium-silicate-hydrate production, and the development of larger aggregates. Consequently, calcium suppressed sediment resuspension by physiochemically changing the sediment properties.This work builds upon recent developments in the field of second dimensional (2D) retention indices (RI) for use in comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC×GC), expanding application to the most commonly used "normal" orthogonality column configuration, where 2D RI are rarely employed. Initially, one dimensional retention indices for 80 wastewater pollutants were determined by GC-MS on a mid-polar ZB-50 column. In order to determine the 2D RIs for peaks detected in wastewater extracts separated by GC×GC -MS, a single injection of a ten-compound standard mix allowed the construction of model-generated isovolatility curves. These curves were used for the determination of 2D RIs of compounds initially identified on the basis of the mass spectral match factor and 1D RIs. Good agreements (average deviation of 1.7%) were observed between the calculated 2D RIs and the measured reference RIs for these compounds. These results show that this approach provides an additional level of confidence for the identification of compounds detected in GC×GC-MS and demonstrates the potential of this approach for improved compound identification in non-targeted analysis.

Diagnosing and treating hypercalcemia during pregnancy can be challenging due to both the physiological changes in calcium homeostasis and the underlying cause for the hypercalcemia. During pregnancy and lactation there is increased mobilization of calcium in the mother to meet the fetus' calcium requirements. Here we discuss the diagnostic challenges, management, and patient perspective of hypercalcemia during pregnancy in two particular cases and in other rare conditions causing hypercalcemia.Patients' perceptions on quality of care and gaps in diagnosis/management of rare endocrine diseases (RED) were collected in a 21-item questionnaire, answered on-line in the patients' language. There were 598 (66% females) responses from 29 countries reflecting pituitary, adrenal, thyroid, parathyroid, gonadal, genetic and autoimmune diseases. While in 36% a diagnosis was made in 50% a specialist/specific treatment was available within 1 month; 60% were satisfied with current treatment. Most (59-67%) would have liked access to psychological support, social worker, dietician or physiotherapist/rehabilitation specialists. Half were satisfied with information received, treatment and health care follow-up; 87% contacted patient/support groups; 78% agreed that "The personal limitations related to the disease, impact on my everyday quality of life". Conclusion Diagnostic delay in RED is still unsatisfactory in Europe, as well as specific needs impacting QoL.
Recent advances in the field of immunotherapy have significantly prolonged the survival of patients with aggressive carcinomas, but the role of immunotherapy in neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) remains to be elucidated.

We report a patient diagnosed with a well-differentiated grade 3 pancreatic NEN (pNEN) and type 3 liver metastases who received compassionate nivolumab as a fifth line treatment and achieved a durable partial response of more than 34 months. We have performed a systematic review to the literature on tumor microenvironment and potential biomarkers in the field of NEN including the tumor mutational burden, the tumor infiltrating lymphocytes, the programmed cell death ligand 1, and the mismatch repair system. The potential role of the immune system modulation together with a critical assessment of the recent phase II clinical studies in NEN including monotherapy with anti-PD-1/PD-L1 monoclonal antibodies, and combination therapies including anti-PD-1 along with anti-CTLA-4 monoclonal antibodies are also provided.

To determine agreement in keratometric readings obtained using rotating Scheimpflug imaging with Pentacam, biograph with Lenstar LS900, and Topcon KR-8100P auto-keratorefractometer in eyes with different stages of keratoconus.

A total of 89 eyes of 58 patients with keratoconus were examined in this study, retrospectively. The eyes were divided into two groups mild group (group 1 42 eyes) (Amsler-Krumeich stage 1) and moderate-to-severe group (group 2 47 eyes) (Amsler-Krumeich stage 2, 3, 4). The keratometric readings measured using the Pentacam Scheimpflug system, Lenstar LS900, and Topcon KR-8100P auto-keratorefractometer were compared between the groups. The effects of the measurements of anterior chamber depth, Q value, axial length, central corneal thickness (CCT), and maximum value of keratometry (Kmax) on the differences of devices for keratometric readings were investigated.

The mean values of the keratometric readings obtained using the Lenstar were steeper than with the Pentacam and Topcon, esp stages of keratoconus. The keratometric readings of Lenstar were found steeper than the other devices with increasing grades of keratoconus. None of these devices can be used interchangeably in moderate-to-severe stages of keratoconus.
To clarify the clinical features of uveitis in elderly patients in central Tokyo.

We retrospectively identified 1424 patients with uveitis who visited the Uveitis Clinic of the University of Tokyo Hospital between January 2013 and December 2018. The patients were categorized into two groups based on their ages at the time of disease onset patients aged 65years or older were included in Group A, whereas those younger than 65years were included in Group B. The etiological classification of uveitis and its causes were investigated for each group.

A total of 612 samples comprising 153 each of raw pooled milk samples, slurry, animal drinking water and human drinking water were gathered from small, medium and large farms located in all seven tehsils of Ludhiana district of Punjab. In addition to that, 37 samples of village pond water were also collected from the targeted villages. Who is the second would-be Trump assassin, Ryan Routh?

The 58-year-old male from Greensboro, North Carolina was taken into custody last Sunday after leaving behind an AK-47 rifle just outside a golfing course in West Palm Beach, Florida. Reports say that, while being detained, Routh showed no emotion and refrained from questioning the purpose of his arrest.

Routh is far from unfamiliar when it comes to run-ins with the law. In 2002, he was involved in a 3-hour stand-off with Greenboro police that resulted in a felony charge of possession of a weapon of mass destruction; it is important to note that this charge could be in reference to his possession of an AK-47. In 2010, Routh was convicted of driving without a license, a hit-and-run and possession of stolen goods. In 2018, he then moved to Oahu, Hawaii where he ran a shed building business, albiet seemly perfunctory according to online reviews.

In more recent years, Routh has become an extreme supporter of Ukarine. He even appeared in a propaganda video for the Azov Brigade, a well-known Ukrainian military unit accused of Neo-Nazi orgins with ties to the CIA. His primary mission in Ukraine consisted of the recruitment of Afghan soldiers. Routh was even featured in a 2023 interview with the New York Times, who stated, "With (Ukrainian) Legion growth stalling, Ryan Routh, a former construction worker from Greensboro, NC is seeking recruits from among Afghan soldiers who fled the Taliban. Mr. Routh, who spent several months in Ukraine last year, said he planned to move them, in some cases illegally, from Pakistan and Iran to Ukraine."

A Semafor report published in March of 2023 cited Routh as director of the International Vounteer Center (IVC), an organization that works with volunteers and NGOs to "enhance the distribution of humanitarian aid throughout Ukraine." Routh was quoted in the report as complaining about facing obstacles in importing foreign soldiers, including a group of Afghan commandos who were facing skeptisim and bureaucratic roadblocks in Kiev. IVC has since denounced any claim of having been affiliated with Routh.

How could a construction worker from Greesnboro, North Carolina afford to move to Hawaii and make multiple trips to and from Ukraine on earnings from a failing shed building business? And how did a man with his history slip through the State Departments travel checks to a country accused of high corruption and money laundering?

Perhpes most questionable of all is Ryan Routh’s vague connection to the CIA. Before being raided by the FBI and having his X account erased, it was discovered that his first follow on the platform, out of a small group of 60, was to a former CIA analyst named Dr. Soo Kim. Kim, also a former policy analyst at the RAND Corperation, is a Yale graduate with an MA in International Studies at Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies. Kim has also worked for the Department of Homeland Security and is a member of the Council of Korean Americans. Her background and affiliations are typical of those who work in the intelligence community. Kim is not a public figure or a well-known CIA affiliate. Where would Routh have known or heard of her?

The territory of the lower reaches of the Kagalnik River is one of the small rivers of the Eastern Azov region was examined with different levels of PTEs contamination in soils, where the excess of the lithosphere clarkes and maximum permissible concentrations (MPC) for Mn, Cr, Zn, Pb, Cu, and Cd were found. The features of the 16 priority PAHs quantitative and qualitative composition in hydromorphic soils and P. australis were revealed. The influence of soil pollution on accumulation in P. australis, as well as changes in the morphological parameters were shown. It has been observed that morphometric changes in P. australis at sites experiencing the сontamination and salinity are reflected with the changes in the ultrastructure of plastids, mitochondria, and EPR elements of plant cells. PTEs accumulated in inactive organs and damaged cell structures. At the same time, PAHs penetrated through the biomembranes and violated their integrity, increased permeability, resulted cell disorganization, meristem, and conductive tissues of roots. The nature and extent of the structural alterations found are dependent on the type and extent of pollution in the examined regions and can be utilized as bioindicators for evaluating the degree of soil phytotoxicity characterized by the accumulation of PTE and PAHs.UV filters (UVFs) and paraben preservatives (PBs) are widely used components in many personal care products. However, there has been a rising concern for their endocrine-disrupting effects on wildlife once they reach aquatic ecosystems via recreative activities and wastewater treatment plants effluents. This study addresses UVFs and PBs occurrence in seawater and sediment impacted by tourism and sewage discharges along the coast of Mahdia, center East Tunisia. Samples of water and sediment were collected for 6 months from 3 coastal areas. Among the 14 investigated UVFs, 8 were detected in seawater and 4 were found in sediment. All PBs were present in seawater and only methylparaben (MePB) was detected in sediment. Benzophenone-3 (oxybenzone, BP3), benzocaine (EtPABA), and MePB were present in all water samples with concentrations in the ranges 16.4-66.9, 7.3-37.7, and 17.6-222 ng/L, respectively. However, the highest value, 1420 ng/L, corresponded to octinoxate (EHMC). In sediments, avobenzone (AVO), 4-methyl benzylidene camphor (4MBC), EHMC, 5-methyl-1-H-benzotriazole (MeBZT), and MePB were detected at concentrations within the range 1.1-17.6 ng/g dw, being MePB the most frequently detected (89%). MePB and MBZT presented the highest sediment-water partition coefficients and MePB also showed a positive correlation with total suspended solids' water content. Overall, pollutants concentrations remained rather constant along the sampling period, showing little seasonal variation. This study constitutes the first monitoring of UVFs and PBs on the Tunisian coastline and provides occurrence data for reference in further surveys in the country.This study assessed the human health risk of exposure to legacy PAHs in the Nwaenebo River sediments that received effluents for over two decades from the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) petroleum product Depot in Emene, Enugu, Nigeria. The study went further to estimate economic costs of the sediment PAHs pollution based on the human health risk of exposure. The human health risks were determined by estimating carcinogenic and mutagenic risks via Benzo[a]pyrene total potential equivalent (BaP TPE) and mutagenic equivalent quotient (MEQ). The economic costs of the sediment pollution comprised costs due to mortality and those due to morbidity and were estimated using the value of statistical lives (VSLs) and cost of illness (CoI), respectively. The study, with an appropriate selection of sampling points established that the NNPC petroleum Depot was responsible for the Nwaenebo River sediment PAHs pollution with ƩPAHs concentration 14.3-163 mg/kg. The carcinogenic and mutagenic risks varied from 1.3*10^-5 to 4.7*10^-5 and 1.4*10^-5 to 6.0*10^-5 respectively. Based on risk threshold of 10^-6, these risks were high. The long term economic costs of pollution of the sediments by the PAHs were estimated at 60.5 million USD and 0.46 million USD for mortality and morbidity costs, respectively.The present study was aimed at determining the efficacy of rock phosphate (RP) 3% loaded in a green coconut shell, chicken manure, and vegetable waste to make green coconut-modified biochar (GMB), chicken manure modified-biochar (CMB), and vegetable waste-modified biochar (VMB) in the fixation of Cr, Pb, Cu, Zn, Ni, and Cd in Sharafi goth and Malir polluted soils. The impact of RP impregnated with organic waste material to produce modified biochars (MBs) on stabilizing PTEs from polluted soils and reducing their uptake by mustard plant has not yet been thoroughly investigated. All modified BCs in 0.5, 1, and 2% doses were used to stabilize Cr, Pb, Cu, Zn, Ni, and Cd in two polluted soils and to reduce their uptake by the mustard plant. The obtained results revealed that the maximum mustard fresh biomass was 17.8% higher with GMB 1% in Sharafi goth polluted soil and 25% higher with VMB 0.5% in Malir polluted soil than in the control treatment. After applying modified BCs, immobilization of Cr, Pb, Cu, Ni, and Cd was observed in both soils and it reduced the uptake of these elements by mustard plants. On the other hand, although Zn mobilization increased by 0.38% for CMB 0.5% and by 5.9% for VMB 0.5% in Sharafi goth polluted soil, as well as by 3.15% for GMB 1%, 6.34% for GMB 2%, and 4.78% for VMB 0.5% in Malir polluted soil, this was due to changes in soil pH and OM. It was found that GMB 1%, CMB 0.5%, and VMB 0.5% have the potential to increase Zn uptake by mustard, while VMB 2% can reduce the element uptake by the plant. Redundancy analysis showed that soil chemical parameters were negatively correlated with PTEs in both soils and reduced their uptake by mustard. The present study revealed that MBs can stabilize PTEs in industrial and wastewater soils polluted with multiple metals and reduce their uptake by plants.In vitro testing of Electronic Nicotine Delivery System (ENDS) aerosol condensates is important in evaluating their potential toxicity. Collecting sufficient condensate for these tests is a time consuming and costly procedure. The "triple puff (TP)" is a novel system which collects the aerosol from three ENDS devices sequentially into a single filter pad and impinger. The TP substantially reduces condensate collection time relative to the conventional single ENDS, single puff (SP), device system. Both the TP and SP (using two puffing profiles) were used to generate condensates from JUUL ENDS e-liquid Mint 5.0% (nicotine by weight). Aerosols were collected using the filter pad and ethanol-containing impinger method. Condensates produced with the SP and TP were compared for concentrations of primary constituents and carbonyl compounds as well as for their cytotoxicity (OECD 129), mutagenicity (OECD 471) and genotoxicity (OECD 487). Condensates generated with the SP and TP, regardless of puffing regimen, were very similar chemically and equivalent in the biological assays tested (not cytotoxic, mutagenic, or genotoxic). The TP device significantly reduces production time of ENDS condensates relative to the standard SP method and thus may facilitate further research by reducing the time and effort required to collect ENDS condensates.
To report the outcomes of the 0.18-mg fluocinolone acetonide implant (FAi) in the treatment of noninfectious uveitis.

Retrospective cohort study.

Patients who received the 0.18-mg FAi for the treatment of noninfectious uveitis affecting the posterior segment (NIU-PS) between July 1, 2019, and August 31, 2021, at the University of Colorado. Patients were excluded if they did not have ≥6 months of follow-up after the placement of the implant.

Data including age, race/ethnicity, sex, uveitis diagnosis, history and current use of anti-inflammatory therapy, use of short-acting corticosteroid injections within the 3 months before the 0.18-mg FAi implantation, visual acuity, intraocular pressure (IOP), grading of anterior chamber and vitreous cell, and presence of cystoid macular edema were obtained from the medical charts. Uveitis recurrence was defined as any increased inflammation that required additional anti-inflammatory therapy.

To investigate whether serum miR-145-5p levels were associated with micro-macrovascular chronic complications in patients with type 1 diabetes (DM1).

A nested case-control study from the EURODIAB Prospective Complications Study was performed.
