Let's unpack this a bit, shall we?

In 2017, a Georgia mother was arrested after allowing her 12-year-old daughter to get a "Jesus Loves" tattoo at a Super Bowl party (I know, I know... how much more cliche can you get?)

In every state in the country tattooing a minor is against the law, so allowing or encouraging a child to get a tattoo makes you complicit in the crime. This is partially based on the legal principle that a minor cannot enter into a legal contract or otherwise render informed consent for a procedure.

However, if a minor wants to get a vaccine without parental consent in some states, like California and New York, minors who are 12 years old or older do not need their parent’s consent to receive the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) or Hepatitis B vaccines.

To be clear, no minor can take puberty blockers, hormones, or get transitional surgery without parental consent, but several states allow transitional surgery with parental consent. In fact, California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill in September 2022 that aims to legally protect transgender youths and their parents if they flee conservative states that have restricted access to gender-affirming care.

So to recap, if a child gets a tattoo that is permanent, even with parental consent, their parents and the tattoo artist can be arrested, fined, and punished but if a child wants to permanently scar and disfigures their body with surgery and hormone therapy that affects their body for the rest of their life, it's legal, acceptable and A-okay.
