The point of communicating is not to talk to people. It's to connect with them. When we try to get people to listen to us by talking at them, we often end up shooting ourselves in the foot. So how do you really get people to listen?

Well, first of all, it's important to understand that we don't all think alike. That's why we need empathy and active listening—so that we can really get a sense of what they're thinking and feeling.

Once we've done that, then the next step is getting our solution out there in a way that resonates with those who don't think like us—in a language, they'll understand and be able to absorb quickly.
