Let’s discuss the difference between the Greater Idaho movement and Liberty State.
GI proposes moving the boundary line of WA back to the Cascades, and including the E WA counties with Idaho. There is one major problem with this: the state Constitution prohibits it. Amendment 33 includes a line saying, “...until such boundaries are modified by appropriate interstate compacts duly approved by the Congress...” This amendment was adopted in 1958 (https://app.leg.wa.gov/rcw/default.aspx?cite=43.58&full=true) to determine a consistent legal boundary along the Columbia River; it moved the boundary up to tens of feet, not the hundreds proposed by GI. In Virginia v Tennessee in 1893, the Supreme Court decided these compacts did not need Congressional approval as “such minor matters as adjustments of boundaries, which have no tendency to increase the political powers of the contracting states...” Compacts with greater impact require Congressional approval, and in WA, a Constitutional Amendment. The GI proposal involves major adjustments which would definitely increase the political power of ID and diminish that of WA, thus it is unconstitutional.
Liberty State proposes to use Article 4, Section 3 of the US Constitution, which lays out the only approved method of creating a new state. Just as other states have done in history, we propose to gain approval from the WA legislature and from Congress. This is typically a decade-long process, during which time, assets and debts are divided and a Constitutional Convention is held.
Even if GI were possible, that effort too would require approval by WA and Congress, and ID as well, making that effort that much more complicated. If ID even wanted to take us into their state... most ID residents do not want us.
ID may be more like-minded to E WA than W WA, but consider that Boise is becoming more like Seattle and Olympia all the time. Why would we go to all the work to create a new state (or whatever process is proposed), only to give our power to yet another rights-denying capitol?
Liberty State is the only Constitutional method before us. Help us create a new state by abiding by the Constitution, which defines a limited government – yes, even in Liberty State.
